No you can't, walking & MTB only, I've heard of 4x4 clubs getting access through there but I don't know how.

Can you ride the other side of the harbour towards Lake Ferry? I know you can't get all the way around? But on the way back from the Dusty Butt on the ferry I saw a mountain biker towards the light house......
By the way, I see some great tracks out that way, nice ride by the looks of it, would be good in a howling southerly I bet...:)

ITs very nice, especially when is dry as it makes the sand more fun. I was ok but on a heavier bike it may be likely you can get stuck on the sand

Agree with you, gone bit further past the light house on MTB myself, really nice area and would be nice to go on motorbike

We had our christmas function at pencarrrow station which is down that road (locked gate through from eastbourne) I think you would have to apply through Wellington Regional council for access (if they give allow access).

Yesterday I have a few hours free to ride, so after a last minute call to Twisty we decided to head to Karapoti to the top of the rock garden. Not actually go down though ;).

But what was going to be a short run ended up with my first puncture, luckily I had almost everything including spare tube. Problem was my high pressure pump was very slow, and I put another hold to the new tube ... anyway it was a long while to get all sorted on a very hot day in the bush. A couple of mountain bikers provided us with a better pump and helped which was very welcome.

Couple of pics

Well I've finally uploaded all my photo's from the south island trip Andy and I did and they can be found Here ( http://cid-9415698b9c0e45c8.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/2010-04-07%20Feb%20southisland ) We had a fairly good trip, the weather was great apart from being very hot at times. Here are a few Photo's from the trip.

<iframe title ="Preview" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" frameborder="0" style="width:320px;height:240px;padding:0;background-color:#fcfcfc;" src="http://cid-9415698b9c0e45c8.skydrive.live.com/embedphoto.aspx/2010-04-07%20Feb%20southisland/Home%20to%20Maungatapu%20track/DSC01634small.JPG"></iframe>

The sign says Maumgatapu track closed, oh well that can't apply to us as we want the maungatapu track. Has anybody heard of this Maumgatapu track somewhere off the Maungatapu?

Andy left to head home Saturday night, while I stayed in Kaikoura and headed home on Sunday via Molesworth, and Taylors pass.

<iframe title ="Preview" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" frameborder="0" style="width:320px;height:240px;padding:0;background-color:#fcfcfc;" src="http://cid-9415698b9c0e45c8.skydrive.live.com/embedphoto.aspx/2010-04-07%20Feb%20southisland/Kaikoura%20sunset^J%20plus%20general%20views/DSC01825small.JPG"></iframe>

Looking at the Sunset across south bay in Kaikoura towars the seaward Kaikoura's, we probably rode through one of those saddles earlier in the day.

I really enjoyed the trip as I hadn't ridden any of the tracks/ gravel roads before, The only down bit was I wasn't feeling that well on Saturday, and think I'd dehydrated myself a bit over the previous 2 days. If you haven't done any of these routes before they are differently worth doing.

Next year I might look at organising a ride down on a weekend the Clarence reserve is open, and maybe camping in there to have more time to explore the area.

Cheers

Howie is a cunning bugger. When I was iin front I would open & shut the gates. When he was in front he would stop to take a picture therefore I would pass him & around the corner would be another bloody gate . He must have six sense. :angry2:

I took a photo of the last gate because i was so very very happy that I managed to stop in time. :sweatdrop Oh yeah, open & shut the gate for Howie.

Yeah I don't know why it worked out like that Andy, thanks for opening 90% of the gates. think I only ended up getting a couple of gates:lol:

For the photos, the only way I've found of getting them in order is to delete/remove them from the post, when they upload which leaves them in your folder, then drag and drop them in the correct order. not sure if there is an easier way of doing it, as it seems like double handling them.

Yeah, is there a "smugness" emoticon" I could use!
Not enough "organised" rides in Wellington for the last couple of months, we do need to get our act back together (and get planning for a 2010 Invasion). I am thinking about Clarence on 6/7 March (maybe) for a start.....
Weather looks tremendous for the weekend so I am sure it will be good up in the hills behind Kapiti. Take advantage of the conditions to get somewhere really gnarly that you wish maybe you hadn't when you are there! :-)

Friendly(ish) if you are a confident off-road rider on your big bike, it's not a walk in the park by any means.

I was taking the piss

I wouldnt recommend Odkins Rd to any big bike - hence the heart attack reference.

While I'm sure there would be a sense of achievment I wouldnt enjoy taking something like your 990 down to the hut.

to many opportunuities for pain

Thanks. No "adventure" stuff planned en route ChCh, just an amble down the coast and then inland highway to Hanmer, via lots of (good) cafe stops. We must not forget most motorcyclists around the world would envy us even for the sealed route! Something not to be complacent about even after scores of trips down to ChCh and back.
Plenty of time for dust next weekend!

whats the KTM big sky ride all about.....

JMJ

Try this:
http://www.highcountry.co.nz/hcd08/bigsky.html

Aside from the first day (Racing Dave's route) Yamaha (ex BMW) Safari a real disappointment at Hanmer in 2009 (have been going for 10 years) so expecting more of the same I thought I would give Robbie's ride a go this year instead of the safari. He is a really good bloke and I am sure we will end up in some amazing places in Otago. Racing Dave and Robbie have put together some marvellous routes all over the South Island on the Safari over the years. In 17 years of flying I have only twice flown higher than I the highest places they sent me on two wheels on Safaris ! I can tell you an R80G/S does not run well at 6000 feet.
Have to say that it appears from reports from friends that the 2010 has Safari returned to its normal (good) form., which is a relief.

anyone interested in A Saturday late morning/ Afternoon gravel road ride in the Wairarapa? It's about the only time I have free this weekend, as I'm booked in sunday to drive a Loco at an open day.

Im guna go for a play in the akatarawa's if you want to join in. Wouldn't mind the company.

I've seen photo's of your playing in the Akatarawa's. I might leave that to I get a smaller bike. I am just starting to look for a 200-250, as I have 2 teens who are interested in getting their bike License’s .

yep thats the one, The AB(steamer) well be there under steam, but not running up and down the track) The rail crane well be lifting a DSG from one road to another, The 100 ton crane (inside the workshop) well be lifting a DX, and there should be Cab rides in a couple of DC loco's if they got a dispensation from the LTSA to have more then 4 people in a cab. Which shouldn't have been to much of a problem.

Well Easter is fast approaching, Who would be interested in a laid back day ride around the back roads of the Wairarapa? Probably start from Featherston leaving at Nine in the morning, head around the Hinakura/Admiral road loop, and then out to Riversdale via Homewood road. Then north via Tinui etc, up to at least Akito, Maybe a bit further depending on time factors. Then return via roads close to the Ruahine’s/ Tararua’s (maybe include North range rd) I would estimate about 350-450km day round trip from Wellington. I would prefer to do this on the Good Friday, or Saturday 3rd April.

you could add from matakoina to pac spur out te mai rd to tinui valley then out castle hill out to old hiway 52 .
or from riversdale turn off at the langdale church go to tinui then out castle hill...
or could take in northcroft rd, dorsets rd, and still be heading north.
couple options..

Anyone interested in a cruisy ride Sunday?

IgorMortis has a new to him shiney flash airhead supertanker and both he and it need christening for ADV riding.

As IM may or may not have decent tyres fitted the final route is to be decided including the level of difficulty, however either way it's likely to be a very mild ride. It may be that the worst terrain we see is a few hundred metres of well formed gravel.

If JMJ is keen and IM is up to going as far as Marsterton my suggestion would be a re-run of the fantastic paper roads Joe took my down on my birthday. If that works out they are big bike, beginner and pillion friendly and you will want to bring your camera.
If not we might just make something up on the day.

Thanks Aslan, I would have to say the the front wheel conversion is great but I would say that. Actually Cathy likes the ride on this bike too. I have always liked the motor in this bike 94 as apposed to the 98 it just has more lift, and now it has the 6 speed gearbox with closer gear ratios its even better off road. It even handeled the motorcross track not to bad I thought. Catch up with you soon. GSers

There will be a number of unpleasant motorcyclists (plus Aslan) nearby if the cafe itself is not obvious enough......

Horseman's Cafe is the cafe at the north end of Shannon, east side of the road. The one with tables and umbrellas (for the rain) outside.
There will be a number of unpleasant motorcyclists (plus Aslan) nearby if the cafe itself is not obvious enough......

I rode over 1500 km in the worst weather last week had to give (Wellington - Muriwai Beach return plus a couple of days commuting in Auckland) so I don't have a "ride in the rain"itch to scratch! I will regretfully (!) stay in bed if the weather forecast for Sunday proves accurate.

It's only water you two. The Metservice forecast over here ( http://www.metservice.com/rural/wairarapa ) is saying that the rain should arrive during the afternoon. It gets a bit hard moving a ride time this close to the ride, as some may not be free at the
re-scheduled time. Also that front could pick up speed or slow down and arrive at a different time

Good to get out on another ride even if the crew could be counted on 1 hand. At least there was no dust and with the odd shower on the way to the dams the ride down was very pleasant. Then we decide to head for Takapari Road via the gravel up through Pohangina then up to the A Frame Hutt we could see it was a lovely day for painting in Dannevirke Bart looks like you could have been painting outside. Then down for the ride home I hope Howie and Aslan are home safe and well. Cheers for the ride GSers

Looks like fun guys, but like Marks and Bart, I decided to stay indoors:bye:

So inspired by your bad weather exploits I am determined to get out this weekend... sat or sun, I'm easy. But I would really like to get a bit of a shorter but gnarlier ride in.
Options close to home are:
1. Karapoti Crossing
2. Odlins Rd.
3. Thomsons hill from Otaki to Manakau (awesome fun last time I did this with stormtrooper and Paul!)
or any other new one would be good as well.:scooter::scooter:

I wonder if "the hill" would be accessible, last time I went it was about a year ago and we didnt get past the second river crossing...

Dont want to do big road or gravel kms as my gear is neither particularly waterproof or warm:gob: But over to the Rapa is good as I can link it with an early morning Karapoti crossing to get me warmed up, and probably a bit wet too:scooter:

Add your ideas and availabilities on here and I hope to see some of you again this weekend...:scooter::scooter:

Hi Andy Mac,
Would have liked a night ride through odlins but missed the thread and was busy at the time, i have been through a week ago and there was plently of dry fire wood in the hutt to burn and warm our hands for the ride out if we decide to go in the future.

How did you like the Moonshine trail ride last week? I did 2 laps and the bike swapped ends 3 times on the greasy clay :shit: but no damage or injuries

Ride was awesome (and challenging). Ended up having to skip the first section, was a little bit too much of the pine needles for me to keep moving. Managed to stay on the bike the whole time, however i did have to have a second go at some of the sections to get through.

My grips started to come loose due to all the moisture (read: very wet), so in the end decided not to go for a second loop.

Will be keen for a future night ride. A little fire and some marshmellows sounds pretty good.

Possibly, I'm heading up to the cold kiwi first thing the next morning so as long as I'm not madly last minute packing I should be able to for a little while.

Name your time and place.

Now that the house is all packed up down here in Blen I might be able to wangle a weekend in Wellies... Hence I could be keen. I'd even do an overnighter if others were mildly keen.

Course I'm unreliable as hell right now cos Mrs Bunny will probably sink my plans by coming over to look at houses...

Sounds good, how about meeting at 5:30 at the Port Nic yacht club, Oriental Bay? Because Jeff is now a salty seadog - Bay of Islands to Nelson
