Typical. The weather in Feilding cleared up after lunch apart from a short sprinkling of hail. Just got home from a ride over Vinegar hill. The ride to Vinegar hill was in the sun and quite pleasant. Pretty chilly so thank god for the new heated grips. The ride back home on SH2 was blusterly with a light shower of rain just south of Hunterville.
Time for a coffee and to thaw out in front of the log fire.
See you all next Sunday hopefully. I think the right decision was made to can today's ride. The weather was just too dodgy and after an hour out on my bike I'm gald to back inside.

I used the opportunity to test the winter thermals. A quiet little run and yes it was nice to be home. Bike is now heavy duty wired for accessories so should be able run the heated handgrips, and make the hot chocolate.
We had a few minutes of light snow this avo at home.

Hey guys guess what I did yesterday?
Yep, went for a ride: SNOW, wind, sleet, rain and freezing cold.... and I really enjoyed it!!!
But it is a good thing we did not do the group ride because if anyone did not have VERY warm and totally waterproof gear they would have been in a bad way (hypothermia). I will do a separate thread about my ride - the surprise in Martinborough alone was worth it!
The long range forecast looks terrific for next Sunday. See pic below. Hope the forecast holds true.

Watch out for that metal when you pull in there as it's pretty deep and loose in certain spots, easy to loose the front end in the loose shingle there, steady as she goes and it'll (should) be all good

Umming and ahhing at this very moment, weather looks ok, might head over and go part the way as i'm not 100% sure I want to ride that far today but ya never know, just gotta get over this "fuck it cold out there feeling" and harden up a a little, in my defence i've been freezing at work for the past few nights and being cold all the time gets old after a while, on the plus side I finally bought some winter glover so that's a step in the right direction I guess.

RIDE REPORT -
Left Masterton at 8 AM and it was ONE DEGREE. :cold:
Friend from Carterton came with me; we stopped in Pahiatua so he could put on another layer and so I could walk and loosen up. :bleh:
86GSXR first to meet us at the start of Pahiatua Track, PNth side. See pic below.
Still freezing but sunny and blue sky.
13 bikes to start, but one never made it to Pahiatua as they were too cold - let you guess who that was.
First stop Alfredton (see pics). Someone put on another pair of gloves as their hands were ice. Getting warmer, maybe 5 degrees!
Back roads to Martinborough (new route for some), plus a bit of rain.
I was group leader and pulled off on the outskirts of Martinborough with two huge fast bikes on my tail. We waited..... and waited.... oh crap, we thought somebody must have binned, but as there was no ambulance we went into Martinborough. Still none of the others.
Mystery solved: SEIZED :shit:  ENGINE.!! Guess who? (Hint - they have 7 other bikes back in their garage.) Bike towed to nearby friendly farm house.
Good lunch at The Village Cafe - a great place for bikers as it is spacious so there is room to dump gear, and a good menu. See pic.
Getting warmer, 8 degrees or so. Brief stop at Stonehenge and the big Haunted House (anyone want to know the reason it is empty?).
Back roads to Masterton. Weather craps out - rain. Group decides to do the Mauriceville route some other time and they head straight back to Pahiatua and home.
All in all, a good ride although we would have preferred dry summer weather with daylight savings time - but better than watching telly back in the house, right?! For most of the ride we were lucky with the weather - sunny and blue sky. There were some bad sections of road, mainly road repairs with loose gravel - glad everyone stayed upright.
Good to ride with you guys again. When and where is the next one?

I really did enjoy the ride all the same. Rode the mighty 225 from Pahiatua to home, so at least I finished riding home myself. Cheers Fasttrax. Great wee bike. Gearings perfect. Hope you've warmed up.
Hopefully recovery will be tomorrow.

Yes, a jolly decent day out thanks guys. Sorry you were feeling the cold Sarge, I know what it's like! Mangrips go on next weekend and it was DAMN cold in parts, think you made the best decision. Many layers kept the worst of it out but the stops were welcome. Poor old Gerble having a seizure, not good but I'm sure she will rise again! Bonez made a very sexy looking pillion though  and also got to sample the mighty Scorpio. Audacious move through the Gorge :gob: love it  and Leonie looked extremely warmer on the Connie. Thanks Radar for a well planned outing. Get the fires going

Quite a few local riders are planning a possible Taranaki loop ride Saturday if the weather holds.

Why does riding your bike to Wellington for a burger need to be a challenge? I'm just suggesting that doing the ride in warmer weather might actually make the ride enjoyable.
But that's just me, I can't really get my head around wearing a half dozen layers just so and you keep from getting hypothermia. I hate it when you're so rugged up you can't move and ride the bike I want too.

With you on this one Sarge:yes:
I thought to celebrate your 1st GC we should do a quick lap of the island...and then back the other way to unwind. Or something like that...

Might see how the body is the week after this one,(it's the monthly ride iirc this weekend) so might give it a miss, might endeavor to the be at the start maybe, the next week after should be better ribs wise.Even fired the bike up on Friday night, first hit started and hadn't been fired up for 3-4 weeks, was looking neglected.
Think a ride round the naki is in jeopardy, the mountain seems to have vanished, wasn't there this morning and I was 2 km from park boundary at dads place, hopefully it will wonder back.

Yep was going to pootle up the road but would've got me arse kicked, good having chauffer(sort of),but if an accident occurs and they find I'm not allowed to operate a vehicle due to op,then no insurance, only another week or so,asked the nurse is it 4 weeks from operation or discharge,I hinted at operation hehe.:bash:
Next week must get better surely, next time I head home my brother is taking me snowboarding up Egmont,so good excuse to ride and use cordura for waterproof and armour warmth on snow, can ski ok but never boarded, skateboarding was ok as teenager.Mind you if they get snow to low levels in Stratford he can be towed behind dads yammy 4x4 in their top paddocks, they have good slopes and close to park boundary.:cold:

Righto, I thought we could depart from the Feilding BP at 1000 on Sunday and head up to Waiouru for the first stop via Vinegar Hill and SH 1.
After a catch up and bite to eat we can then proceed to Feilds Track, a legendary piece of back country rd. Bring your camera's as the scenery is quite spectacular from the top of the hill
The track itself is reasonably challenging, quite steep in places with the possibility of damp and the odd amount of pea gravel. If we take it easy there should be no problems.
The track takes us back down to the Para's, another iconic road and from there we can head back via Fordell.

My route - backroads - through Halcombe, (maybe Hunterville / Fordell) Marton, Turakina.
Finishing with Drinks at ??? (to be determined)
Feilding Riders Club is still very much active after an absolutely shocking June and July. But it was winter after all but a lot colder and wetter than I remember the last few years being.
The weather has not been kind to us and it has been frustrating postponing and cancelling rides for weather and safety. One of our informal rides was mostly okay then we got caught in extremly strong winds - I love the Manawatu.
This Wednesday we have our monthly club social night at Murray's Irish Bar in Feilding. It would be great to have a few of the old faces there to meet some of the newer riders in our group. Let's confirm some rides and organise a party :wari::drinknsin to get over the weather.

approximately 250km
We will need dry road conditions for this ride to be safe. It's not one that I would want to do if the roads are wet. We may have to go a different road to Pohangina. Last time I went on the road from Colyton there were road works. These may be finished by now. I'll check if I can before the ride.
I could be a starter for Labour Weekend.

Registration is at the Wanganui Motor Boat Clubrooms {Tomcc clubrooms}Anzac parade from 9am with the ride departing at 10-30am

The weather forecast for Sunday 23 august is looking pretty good.
I checked Valley Road today near Colyton today. There are still roadworks so instead of turning left at Colyton we'll just carry on to Ashurst, turning sharp left at the bottom of the hill into North Street.
See you all 10.00 a.m. BP Feilding.

A nice run today. Thanks everyone for making it a great day. Pemberton road was a nice variation. Bugger about the flat bandit (1200) on the road. Low point was we went out with 3 Alistairs and only came back with 2, One of our riders taking a tumble and hitting the road. It doesn't look too bad, nice leathers bud rib cage is a bit painful. So he got a free ambo ride .... eventually.:(

Hi All
Not flash for me yesterday. Still don't know what happened. The front was diving a bit under braking. All I remember was the front ducking in and a front washout. Its possible the brakes locked, new brake pads?
Anyways I am fine except for bruising and a broken rib, hurts like a bitch though. Got to sleep sitting up can't breathe to hard, cough or

Good to hear that the rest of the ride was okay. I still have to pick up the bike, its pretty battered.

Labour Weekend 2009. :2thumbsup
So for anyone whose keen it looks like we might be doing a run up to Eastcape and then tagging along with the local Ulysses club on the Sunday to shoot across to the Naki. We will be able to down a few beers while we are waiting for them, Stay the night at Ynots contacts and Head home on the Sunday. We've possibly also got accomodation at Waiaroa for the Friday or Saturday Night.
I will post up details of the Sunday run tomorrow but we need ideas and numbers to start running with this one.

Ok so more details will come out over the next weekend but this what we are looking at.
From Ulysses Club "The Ride
The ride starts at sunrise on Sunday 25 October from Lottin Point which is an idyllic spot situated right on the coast with pohutukawa tree framed ocean views in all directions. 18km from Hicks Bay, 24km from Waihau Bay and just 4km off SH35. The ride ends at sunset at the Wind Wand on the foreshore in New Plymouth. In between take any route you want or follow the leader. Breakfast at say Opotiki and lunch at around lunchtime some place else. Guess your distance and win a prize. $5.00 ride fee, winner takes all.
Enjoy a leisurely ride back to Palmerston North on Monday.
The idea for our lot, is to head up to East cape Either Friday avo or Saturday for a sunrise Sunday Morning Start. Maybe find somewhere close for Sat night. A plan for accomodation will be worked out this week.
If you have any ideas for Saturday night Accom. can you let YNOT or me know before Wednesday. Cheers Gary.
We also need an idea of numbers so we can get the best deals.

At this stage and having spoken to the hosts 10-14 days ago, they have room for all, albeit maybe tents needed. My plan is leaving Saturday to Wairoa, those brave enough to do the cape ride probably need to head further around the coast for start on Sunday. But that is up to those folk, and probably take the direct route, but we can still tag along to Wairoa, albeit stopping at Te Mata peak or other places along the way.
We can organise both trips I believe.I will not be doing cape to cape so the shorter version is an idea I came up with.
Those doing the shorter trip to Wairoa will definately need numbers, then we can plan route to and fro,and things to do Sunday, maybe fishing, drinking, enjoying local trails, and home Monday.
Will definately find out how many can be housed without tents,or if to many maybe suss out campground, local pubs etc.Originally we said maybe 6-8 people and this was fine,so the more the better.

"Hi every one im new to your group so hope this works first off.{It didn't}
Im Mike I live in Feilding and ride a silver M109R some of you may have seen me around . I'm hoping to get out for a ride with you all some time soon . problem being I am a shift worker working 4 days on and 4 days off then extra days for over time , so end up working a lot of weekends and to make it worse my wife works weekends as well but am a keen rider so should make it for a ride sooner or later.
I went on the TOMCC charity run was a well organized ride and some good scenery they raised over $ 3000.00 for the Wanganui hospital so was a good
cause .
The TVNZ 1 was there filming every one and then went and said that the run was a protest against michael law and his no patch law -- -that was a real scummy thing to turn a charity ride in to a protest ride ------ there were some good spot prizes and a auctions witch were real good value would recommend this ride to every one next year .
Cheers Mike"

Open to ideas for labour weekend, need to pray for good weather.Personally I like the short idea, but we should be able to incorporate the ride to suit all.
Cape to cape looks like a good ride, for bed in NP can I suggest Sunflower lodge c/o Boob Johnson,or if in Hawera area a few back packers-Wheatley Downs just out of town, but close to Tawhiti Museum, which is well worth viewing. The back packers is on Ararata Rd which is off Tawhiti Rd and museum is just passed cnr of both roads. Can take this road to SH3 south of Mokoia.Manutahi pub at Manutahi is another good country pub on main road before Patea.

Obviously if the weather's shite we'll do it another time.

Fields tracks was in pretty good nick when I did the recce a while ago. Still need to be aware of stock, metal on the road and cars on the wrong side of the road. Totally agree about the scenery - fantastic as you drop down the hill towards the Paras.

See you all at 10.00 a.m. Although the weather now (7.15 a.m.) looks a bit dodgy the forecast for both Waiouru and Wanganui is "Any remaining rain clearing this morning. Fine spells increasing in the afternoon. Westerlies dying out." So we should be okay. Just have to be careful on any corners that don't get much sun and are still wet plus any gravel as Gary mentions.

Sorry you couldn't make it Radar!
Well, what a great day!
Woke up to a clearing cloud cover. Young Sam is still in hospital after his Op and not sure if he'd be home today so Michelle decided she had better be home if he was. So I was very generously handed the keys to the Buell :woohoo: Reason being is that my rear is just about down to the threads and there was concern that it might be a bit slippery. And the Buell needs a few more km's before some big rides. Well, who's going to complain about an offer like that?
Sam then texted to say he's home tomorrow so Michelle to take Tiger and meet us in Wanga's later after taking care of the remaining young one's
So off I went to Feilding to meet up with a few of the crew. GREAT to see the fabulous Thunderbird arrive - very, very nice!
Hit Vinegar Hill, magic as always, and then a quick squirt up 1 to Waiouru for lunch. Good to see Banditrider awaiting after trying unsuccessfully to kill his PR2's.
Now, this Buell is a magical piece of kit and set up just right, so I had the most fun on Feilds track as it's possible to have. It was just like being on a big trail bike, razor sharp handling and 200% fun factor
Had a great run to the bridge with retired motoman and a quick stop for pics and a yak.
Got to the bottom of the track and hit the Para's. Apart from a couple of slips they are in sublime condition and this time of year is probably as good as it gets. No dodgy bits, except for the mud left over from the slips.
Stopped at the pub for a quick thirst quencher and were joined by Monamie, the Toolman and Judy on the two Tigers. Michelle put the 10000th km on my Tiger on the way, so it's time for new tyres (PR2's) and the 10K service next week
Onwards to Hunterville via Fordell and the Valley then home down 1 and Halcombe. Marvelous as ever!
A visit to the hospital was in order, Sam doing well
Good to meet the new faces. Thanks all for a great day!!!

Awesome ride yesterday apart from wee mishap that I had after going back up the road to take a photo. I put my foot down to support the bike as I did a tight 180 turn. Problem was the ground was too far away!! Anyway the bike came off pretty light with the back cover of the indicator broken. Nothing a piece of insulation tape couldn't fix.
The last time I rode the paras there were road works. Boy what a difference now that they are finished. Zipping along the top was a lot of fun.
Here's a couple of photos. A team photo, a refuelling stop, cool looking Thunderbird (couple days old I gather) and my bike overlooking the road down from the summit and just before it fell over :) Click again on the photo to get an even larger version.

If anyone wants to enjoy the pain and meet first in Palmy let me know otherwise meeting point is in Feilding. Departing Feilding at 8:30.
First Daylight Saving Ride. Get your clocks sorted tonight

Wish I was. Forecast tomorrow is, to quote a local, "fxxking mint slice". Unfortunately this is a school weekend for Liz so I'm stuck with the kids.

does this group meet on a regular basis or is it just very casual? When and how do you advertise your rides? I would be keen to do a few group rides
