All makes welcome - Experienced, newer and returning riders welcome Meet BP Feilding

Come and meet other local riders and ride some of the regions picturesque roads - Stopping for a snack along the way.

FEILDING RIDERS CLUB - 1st Sunday Ride :soon:
Start time 10:00am 15th March, finishing early afternoon.
Leaving from Feilding Railway Station

Even if you can't make the ride come along and say gidday.

This will be an introductory ride to get some of the surrounding riders together.

You don't have to be a Feilding person, it's a base only.
We will be allowing for all rider levels and using group rides tricks that we've picked up. (Thanks Manawatu Riders and CDMTC)

The plan is to develop more local rides over the next few months with a few runs of 400km upwards. Maybe a monthly big ride.

Note:

This is an informal club but may become more structured later on.
Ride will finish early afternoon but riders will be able to cut back early.
This is a social ride to get to know other riders. Don't expect a fast pace.
All Sensible Manawatu Riders are welcome to join us for the ride.

Will probably go back to "Murray's" garden bar afterwards for a chat and drink.
Rear entrance and car park on Eyre Street (By Vet Clinic)

Look forward to seeing you there.:ride: Future rides suggestions welcome. (The plan is to develop more local rides over the next few months with a few runs of 400km upwards. Maybe a monthly big ride.)

Then monthly social time - Last Wednesday of each month at Murray's - 7:30pm.

If you have any questions please post on this thread, or PM 'Kiwikat',
or Text 027 2469778.

Good turn out. Feilding to Magaweka. then on to Vineger Hill. A few of us cut the ride short there while the rest headed of to Hunterville then on to Turakina valley. My excuse is I need a nana nap ready for a wee poodle later on in the arvo. Nice day for it and quite a few bikes of all sorts out and about.

It was nice to meet Radar and co as well as a few of the Feilding crew. Good to see so many learners out.

Yep. The day went well. Special thanks to those friendly Manawatu Riders who came over and supported this first ride. :third:You lot rock.

It was a leisurely ride all around and really great to ride some beaut roads and get some newbies out.:scooter:

Awesome to have visitors from Wairarapa. It was fantastic to meet such sociable riders (route nearly changed to Martinborough). I hope you enjoyed the rest of the day)

Thank you to Bonezandmonamieand86gsxr for leading the visitors back through Vinegar Hill. :chase:

Now to build on this with regular social meets and a mix short and long rides.

Some pics are available at http://www.visualisethefuture.com/apps/photos/ - more to be added.

Nice to catch up with some out of town KBers and have you along on the ride today. :niceone: Thanks for the tips. Next time we are heading over your way I will try to remember to send you a PM.

Keep and eye on the Manawatu threads and watch out for the green frog we discussed.

Did you turn the wheel half a turn. That'll fix it.

Yeah it was a good ride. Had two riders on L plates but they kept up OK. Had one Hyosung, one Buell, two BMW, two Moto Guzzi's and some old an orrible onda things. there were lots of other cool bikes too, like Yamas and Suzis. Ride report coming soon. No Kwakas !!! There is hope yet.

Really enjoyed this ride. Thanks KK and co for organising what I'd say will become a pretty good event on the Manawatu biking calendar  It was GREAT being back in the drivers seat, and what a splendid route! Good to meet several new faces, look forward to another one. Well done :niceone:

15 motorcyclists turned up at the Feilding Railway Station for the 10:00am meet (including two pillions). 3 of the riders (Radar and co) were from outside the region, coming through from Wairarapa, to join us on the ride and then flick across to Te Manawa. The Manawatu reputation :Punk:is obviously strong :laugh:and our visitors were pleased to meet up with the old an orrible Bonez, and enquired about the lime green Kwaka (not frog) rider. Four riders from Rongotea joined us and we caught up with a new Kimbolton Biker on a mighty 919 Monster. (We will see more of this bike on Friday night rides)

A leisurely pace was maintained up to Rangiwahia where the skies and scenery were magnificent with Mt. Ruapehu almost within touching distance. I had forgotten what it was like to sit on a comfy 100k and once I got used to it I was able to appreciate the surroundings instead of just blasting past.

At Rangiwahia we regrouped where I learnt about about the inflexibility of metal pin and 2 finger control. No time for the rust to set in there. The road out to Mangaweka was in excellent condition, so would be worth another look before the damp weather sets in. Over the slippery Mangaweka bridge and a quick run down towards Hunterville was in order. Our two mature newbies did very well with nice lines through the twisties and handled SH1 traffic nicely.

We had arranged a quick stop at Vinegar Turnoff where a few of the group were heading back to Palmy but this was missed :Oops:by a few riders who went past the intersection, not noticing everyone else waving madly at them. A momentary (safe) flick into warp drive on the Kat :chase::scooter:and the group was stopped just before heading out of Hunterville.

At Hunterville we had a relaxing sip, bite and refuel (Not at Challenge which had no gas). After me nearly dropping the Kat (no one saw) we then headed down to Marton and across to Turkina, then back through Crofton, Reikorangi, Stanway, Makino and to Murray's for a refreshment stop. All in all a good ride, which gave me a good understanding of riding with and supporting newbies. (Now I know.) Thanks again to everyone who turned up on the day.

A couple of weeks ago the idea of this ride was proposed as a way of getting to meet more of the Manawatu riders around the Feilding Region. Everyone knows someone who rides a motorcycle. A small amount of promotion was done but at relatively short notice we were unsure what the result would be. At our next social meet (Wednesday 25th at Murray's) and over the next few weeks we will be building on this and setting up scheduled short and long rides :soon:(not too long Bandit).

p.s the vibrating little monster wants wheelie lessons, mmmnn.

All suggestions welcome. Still a newbie at this. Needing your professional help to set up some long ones. At this stage I'm looking at setting up two medium runs. One being Napier / Taupo (National park?) loop, with feed stops for the horses. Another being Taraunga way with an Awakeri stopover. (Poss mid winter/ spring). If we can link into other regions riders for one or two organised rides a year that's good.

Driving directions to Palmerston North, Manawatu-Wanganui, New Zealand
984 km – about 17 hours 46 mins

Now this bit I like. I always thought it took ages to get to Wangas. Also can be split into different rides easily with some variations.

Yep a nice figure 8 and some great roads in there. Also lots of other small changes that could be made and still keep the distance pretty similar. You can usually cut out 1,000km in 12 - 12.5 hours without being silly although that route does have quite a bit of back road stuff.

Maybe join KB'ers in Hawkes Bay for a route that they choose, then stay the night in Napier - Archie's Bunker (backpackers) is a great place, has off road parking for bikes and has great location in city centre.

Wairarapa: lunch at Castle Point, Lake Ferry, Tin Hut, Gladstone Pub or Martinborough. Could join with Wgtn KB'ers.

Forgotten Highway. Did this recently with AKL KB'ers.

Had a great time with you lot and hope to join your group again. Will post a few pics and a video later today.

its 180... otherwise you'd just spin around and carry on the way you were already travelling and all you do is jump on the rear brake, inside leg out slide round the back and clutch out smoothly... then get a ticket.

I AM shy, truely, and I am NOT sensible on a bike, thats a fact.

Hi. New member to the Kiwi Biker forums. I'm a Feilding local and ride a V-Strom 650. I'm keen to come along on a few rides. Sorry I'm working in New Plymouth this week otherwise I would come to the meeting.

I agree that our area has some great roads for rides. Last Sunday I rode up the Pohangina Valley East Road , through Utuwai and across to Apiti then back home to Feilding. Awesome roads.

I'll be going on the Marton to the Mountain ride this coming Sunday.

Cheers

Cheers
Nigel

Nice bikes those. Will have to catch up with on some rides soon. I can't make the Sunday ride but the flyers sound interesting. It would be interesting to know more about it. You might like to post up your comments about the ride.

Cheers Gary.

We muddled along tonight but there was a good crowd and some good ideas came out.
Thanks to everyone who came along, a 367% improvement in numbers on our 1st meeting. From 3 up to 11.

Rides being organised (further details to follow)
- Sunday 5th April, a light cruise for "end of summer" heads 10:00 then lunch
- Sunday 26th April to Napier via backroads, feeds and return
- Weekend 9/10 May Tokaanu, possibly overnight.

Other suggestions included 800km rides, linking in with other groups etc.
to develop over time.

10:00am departure - Day after daylight saving makes it 11:00 in today time. Suggestions are to leave from a servo so everyone can fill up etc so there might be a change as to where we leave from.

Mid June - shortest day - Night ride to Wellington is a possibilty. It will be cold.:cold:

Date / time. Post it on the site and go for it. :done:You only need to give a little bit of warning and get 3 or 4 on board. Remember that night riding has an increased chill / risk factor for some riders though. Not everyone has the right gear.

Nothing will be more on my mind, I'm one of those summer weight riders myself. All my gear is armour and mesh and not much else. And if my riding partner comes along, shes only slightly better off.

 Look at doing a night ride on the shortest day of the year IE longest night.
Head to Wellington for a burger. Will confirm date later.
May leave Feilding at 9.00pm Return 1.00am.
Heated Hand grips would be nice, and woollies a must.
If it is raining then ride will not go ahead, Don't need the extra problem of wet and cold.

No one said all were, the ones that think they aren't can look after themselves, its the new ones I was referring to that may need extra attention and consideration on longer rides.

That and the fact not all 250's are fast, they range from being tapped out at 120pkh up to about 200kph so some will be at their max for a long time on a long trip even at the speed limit.

Things to consider when we do a trip and invite ALL along. Better to plan now than have them fail later mid ride with no options.

Hi Sarah. I would be interested to see your Spot Messenger - will you bring it on Sunday? It does seem like a good item for clubs to purchase.

You mention "a new rider from over the ridge". Not sure what ridge that is but I hope to join the Fielding Riders for the second time. Nathan from Carterton may come as well, plus a new KB'er from Masterton.

Kiwikat, are you going to the BBQ Saturday evening (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=95047&highlight=BBQ)? I met a group of Wgtn KB'ers yesterday in Upper Hutt who are going, so the BBQ looks to be a big KB event. I would like to go to the BBQ and your Sunday ride, so a night in PNth looks a possibility.

:scooter:

Heh that was a bugger, I was going about 120km/h and was changing gear, didnt occur to me instantly what had happened, i thought i'd blown up 3rd gear because it happened when i changed. Luckly when it snapped it didn't take out anything else with it, I'm not buying a $80 chain again, it had only been on my bike 2 weeks too...

I got my flat mates to drop off my old chain links and my tool kit and I got to work fixing it, on the side of the road. ( which took over an hour due to fairings )

Slydesigns came out and gave me a hand for a while, then caught up with you guys, then came back and I followed him slowly back to town. My chain link was shagged and it was only a matter a time until it was going to fly off again. We got the ANZA and i bought a new chain, a decent one this time, and took another hour to install it.

Finally after all that drama slydesigns and I got out and went for a good thrash, just what i needed.

A very big thanks to everyone that stopped and offered their help. About 10 different cars stopped, including Meanie. Bonez came back on the mighty GB. Also a big thanks to Slydesigns for coming out and helping out, we had a mean ride.

Good ride yesterday Gary. Really well organised with map and notes on where to go. Only hiccup for me was when the cattle got unsettled and broke through the electric fence.

Just a short note for everyone on these rides. Always stay a safe distance from the person in front of you. If the person infront has to stop quickly for whatever reason be it stock on the road, bee inside their helmet etc. it is the following riders responsibility to be able to ride past or stop before running into the back of the rider in front!

Another thing to take into account is all bikes and riders have different stopping abilities. Stay staggered and be alert to whats going on around you.

The credit for the organised leisurely rides needs to go to quite a few people. In particular to Brent who helped crank things up. Without everyone getting on board over the past month it wouldn't happen.:done:

The concept is to also include and promote newer riders :2thumbsup which means that on some of our rides we may have 'cheats' or shortcuts for some of the slower riders. More twisties for the rest.

We are now at the stage of getting other riders to help out by taking responsibility for some rides and events. Bonez has been helping out heaps and the ride on the 26th will have a lot of his handiwork in it. The 'Burger Run' to Wellington should also be fun.:soon:

Always TRY to pull over, sometimes the bloody camber on road side is huge when truck full of nags, some people don't understand horses move around and that is compunded with camber,I will endeavour to pull to the side, however if I do it 3 or so times and granny don't pass stuff em.

Also when reaching passing lanes uphill usually then find a 40 tonne combo pulls out to pass another rig, instead of waiting till the 2 or 3 cars behind get a chance to pass.

Proposed Ride Sunday 10 May (Mother's Day)

Ride Distance Approx 250 km

Depart BP Feilding 10.00 a.m. heading north up Kimbolton Road
Colyton via Colyton Road
Awahou North via Taionui Road, Valley Road, Pohangina Road and Pohangina Valley East Road
Komako Still on Pohangina Valley East Road
Apiti via Oroua Valley Road
Kimbolten (Toilet stop) Via Oroua Valley Road, Apiti Road and Rangiwahia Road

Those that need to get home home early can return to Feilding from here making a trip of around about 125km

Rangiwahia Heading back north along Rangiwahia Road (Quite windy in places and some loose chips)
Mangaweka via Ruahine Road. (Bring your camera)

Pit stop / toilet stop at Mangaweka Service Station (DC3 Plane)

Hunterville Via SH2

Suggest we stop at a Cafe here for lunch. People can then make their own way home via SH2 or back north 5km and over Vinegar Hill. Going back to Feilding via Vinegar Hill brings the ride distance to approximately 250km

If the weather is fine tomorrow Sunday 3 May I will be checking the ride route out. The Pohangina Valley East road is superb for spirited riding but care must be taken on several corners after long straits for loose chips as you won't be able to slow down in time if you are going a bit quick. The road between Kimbolten and Rangiwahia has many tight corners and some loose chips. It's fine to ride on however. Ruahine Road to Managweka has some great scenery so we may want to stop to take photos.

Like other rides the second rider will need to stop at corners so that no one overshoots. All roads on this ride are sealed but if you wrong you could end up on a gravel road.

Cheers
Nigel

Checked out the roads yesterday. Everything is looking pretty good. Just a couple of short sections require care:

1. Valley Road going Colyton. Short piece of resealed road near the summit of the hill. Still some loose chips

2. Pohangina Valley East Road. By Totara Park the corner just after the park has been resealed. Loose chips.

3. Rangiwahia Road. About 15 minutes north of Kimbolten the road has been resealed and there are a lot of loose chips. This is one that could catch someone out travelling too quick and not being able to slow down in time. The other ones mentioned shouldn't cause a problem.

4. The Vinegar Hill road back to Feilding has a few corners with loose chips but that's nothing new!!

I came across about 10 - 12 scooters going the other way near Apiti. Out for a low speed ride I guess :)

See you all on Sunday, weather permitting.

No complaints from mine (after I plugged everything in properly and glued the grips down - shop didn't bother doing a proper job). Apparently they do (though perhaps it looks different to that one). The new bit is the separate on/off. The Connie's ones only has up/down which sux a bit as you have to hold the button down for a while to get them to come on. Also hard to see in the dark - they could do with reflective labelling or something.

If the sports ones are as good as the others then I think I'd be keen too - nice to have a smaller controller etc.

The weather forecast for the Wairarapa (http://www.metservice.co.nz/public/ruralWeather/wairarapa.html) on Sunday is "Periods of rain. Strong cold southerlies." Similar for the Manawatu. Seems to be typical Queen's BDay weather. Lets hope for a good weather otherwise it will be yet another canceled ride.

Cold I can handle but for lots of rain I will have to find my HTFU pills.

Hay All.
Is this Sundays ride Leaving BP Feilding at10am?
Hope the weather improves.
I will not be able to do it as I am on call. Lucky old me.

The Night ride on the 20th of June will leave BP Feailding at 8.15ish pm :IE meet at 8pm. Will be doing Main roads for most of it. May go Opiki way to Wellington, Pie cart at Railway station then up to Mount Victoria Look out before Heading home.
Fit those heated grips. Pull out the thermals and the winter woolies. It will be cold.
Note that this will be a gentle pace.

See you all there.:Punk:

THE ROUTE FOR SUNDAY'S RIDE

I went out this morning and did the entire route, arriving back home after 5 PM. Here is the route:

Meet in Palmerston North. I will consult with Gary about the time and place but I suggest 10 AM at the start of the Pahiatua Track.

Pahaitua Track - regroup in Pahiatua just before the main street.

Back roads to Alfredton, then Te Ore Ore (bypassing central Masterton).

Wainuioru and around to join the road north of Gladstone.

Gladstone (not the pub) to Longbush to Martinborough.

Lunch in Martinborough.
The Village Cafe - spacious, room for our gear, and a good menu.

North to Ponatahi, brief stops at Stonehenge Aotearoa and The Haunted House, back roads to Masterton.

Tiki Tour through the centre of Masterton and Queen Elizabeth Park.

Back roads to Mauriceville and Eketahuna.

Final regroup at the Tui Cafe, Mangatanoika.

Return to the Manawatu via the gorge or track.

SEVERE WEATHER WARNING - ISSUED BY MetService AT 7:59 pm 29-May-2009

WELLINGTON WAIRARAPA (http://www.metservice.co.nz/public/weatherWarnings/severe-weather-warnings.html)
Strong, bitterly cold southerlies expected to spread north early
Sunday morning. In the 24 hours from about 8am Sunday expect
10 to 20cm of snow above 300 metres and lighter falls down to about
200 metres on the hills.

Wairarapa Rural Forecast for Sunday:
Showers developing and snow lowering to 200 metres. Becoming cold, and southerlies rising to gale in exposed places.

The forecast for next Sunday (http://www.metservice.co.nz/public/ruralWeather/wairarapa.html) is much better: SUNNY, DRY, LIGHT WINDS

Forecasts can change, so Gary and I will make a final decision Sunday morning at 7.30, posting here and on the Feilding Rider's Club email list.

How's this look?

Yes, that is it, basically.

I will post a scanned detailed map later today and will include more road and place names.

But the weather looks GRIM. Latest forecast for tomorrow:
Sleety showers and strong cold southerlies.

The maximum temperature will be 7 degrees, or another forecast puts the max to only 3 degrees. I doubt if many will show up when its so cold - are there any definite starters for tomorrow?

Cold weather is OK with me, even the odd shower, but snow or "sleety showers" is dangerous for cagers and a definite NO for us.

Anyhow, I can tell you that the route is fantastic! We had mostly sunny weather over here yesterday and many times while I did the route I felt like stopping to get pics and videos - the valleys and snowy peaks were magnificent. The cafe in Martinborough is tops, and we can do sneak views of Stonehenge and the nearby Haunted House.

...

Are there any definite starters for tomorrow?
Post here or PM me. Thanks.

If there will only be 3 or 4 of us, it may be better to postpone the ride to next weekend - see forecast here (http://www.metservice.co.nz/public/ruralWeather/wairarapa.html)(dry and sunny).

But hey, if we get a group for tomorrow, I will be there with my thermals and a bottle of HTFU pills! :wari:

I'm keen if cold. Don't mind if there's a little bit of moisture around but no reason to be silly if it's atrocious. Route 52 can be a little slippery in places in the wet...

The route looks great (if I got it right), takes in a couple of roads I haven't done.

I just spoke with KiwiKat, Gary - at this stage the ride is ON.

At the moment it looks like we have 6 or 7 definite starters for the ride. Nathan from Carterton will join me in Masterton, meeting you at the start of the Pahiatua Track.

We will look at the weather in the Manawatu and Wairarapa tomorrow at 7.30 AM. Some sunshine is forecast for both places, along with a bit of rain. Most of us are OK with cold weather and a bit of rain, but if there are strong winds or if it is bucketing down, we will cancel (postpone) the ride.

I will post a map and further details soon.

Its a ripper of a route so get your thermals and join us!
