well two steps forward and one step back.
Have been having intermittent starting problems, thought i had solved it by tracing the wiring and finding the cliutch interlock switch wire loose in its plug under the tank, and blasting the clutch switch with crc.Installed my ohlins this afternoon(a bit more involved than the ohlins instructions suggest!) and the transformation is incredible, mind you my existing back shock was absolutely shot!.:woohoo:
So thats all good but my starting problems are back.Push the button and no response, just a very slight click,no crankin action at all.It bump starts tho...
recently overhauled the rear brake with new shoes and rebuilt the std caliper, both brakes MUCH better

Padmei- I'm almost loath to admit it, but I'm warming to that paint scheme!
BMWST - Sorry I missed you. Maybe I can check out that Ohlins in the daylight sometime though.
In the meantime I'll have a think about your start problem. Perhaps you could've swopped the loaner beancan for a loaner starter!
Also - your new brake shoes - are they gen. BMW or aftermarket? I've often heard that a good result comes from re-lined (with a greater friction material) original shoes. Together with frequent use of the rear brake to keep them bedded in.

Gerard, I got all excited thinking you were going to update us with your GS build.
Eddie its still happening but the last couple of weeks I have had other things on.
ie: South Island last weekend for a BMWOR Rally Good Bike and back down there again this weekend on the Ruffy for the anniversary ride. I have had a bit of prep work to do on the bikes. Back to the YZ1150RR I have just about finished building the jig so I can build the frame making sure that everthing is lined up correcttly I bought a lathe so I could make the parts saves paying some other bugger. Once the jig is finished I need to turn up the new steering head and then bits and pieces and the the frame should start coming together. I have taken photos as I go so a report will be in order once it is further down the track.
Catch up again soon regards GSers

How & where & does it have all the gadgety things??? Why is it heaven - what do you gain in real actual riding terms - ie rear wheel sticks to the ground over corrugations - that kind of thing???

it ignores bumps and rides like ac arpet. 15kmh faster around corners, makes bike track like a train

as far as i know the std shock is not rebuildable. Some clever bastard could make it so i suppose. My rear shock was absolutely had it.In comparison i dont even feel bumps and dips in the road that had my old shock in fits.
I send you my old shock if you want it.I was gonna go and see Damon at cycle works to see if he could make it rebuildabale(ie able to take it apart to replace seals and alter damping change fluids etc)

Thanks ST but I already have 3 stock shocks & 2 of them are stuffed - the one on the bike at the mo had some oil on it after the ride in the weekend so I'm wondering if I rooted the seal on the off road bits

up and running. did some riding last weekend. You really notice the difference between the mono and the para when doing some tech riding over rocks. especially on the uphills when you have the power down. The torque really stiffens up the rear and its like riding a hardtail, will take some getting used to again.
Added fairing and PD tank too. Just need some lowered pegs urgently though.

Craig - would certainly like the BMW performance going to and from the event - however, I appreciate the light weight / increased confidence factor of the DR so the DR wins. From my experience last year, for most sections a big GS would be fine - a challenge for single track and some of the many stream crossings.

Well don't I feel like a right plonker:doh:, I have been trying to get a battery for my 01 1150GS that doesn't have heated grips or ABS so it has a 14AH battery in it not the 19AH that the others do. In the battery compartment it looked as tho a spacer had been spot welded in to take up the room that the bigger battery would have needed, I didn't want to cut it out as I want the bike to remain factory. Everyone kept saying that the BMW only came out with the 19AH battery, quick search on the net proves they didn't but never mind.Well seeing as Im not allowed to ride for a little while I thought right lets get this tank off and cut this spacer out(quite an easy bike to work on one armed). I removed the 4 nuts holding down the battery box but it wouldn't come off (cables and shit clamped underneath) but while I was down there what did I see F...in nuts holding that spacer in, oh f..k good one. So I undid the one on the right side and went over to the left to undo those 2 but the air intake is in the way, so undo the aircleaner screws and WTF the filter is covered in feathers, I looked down the tube and there has been a bird stuck in there for some time, I thought it felt alittle sluggish last ride:facepalm:
The battery had lasted 9.5 years so I spose a new one had to come some time, it will now be the big one tho $235:whocares:

Yeah the 14AH Battery is not as high as the 19AH so a spacer (block) was bolted in at the factory, now that I have takin that block out the taller 19AH will fit in no worries. The original battery was only 135mm high but same dimensions width and depth, but none in NZ it appears. The space infront of the battery is quite a large unused area on my bike.

2010 R1200GSA, the demo from Mount Motorcycles.
No SM... Mount Motorcycles has it... must get around to updating... Twas (and still is) an excellent bike, but not quite suited to thousand km a day etc. Tank range and seat far better on BMW (along with a bunch of other stuff). That's quite a bike you've bought. I've never ridden an R1200GS, apart from a short stint on an HP2 around town. Not sure what the handling is like.
Mostly I think that a bike that handles well will make someone look a better rider, but more power will do stuff-all for your riding. You'll have to get used to the feedback of the front end. Once you do, you'll probably find that it handles just as well if not better, than your KTM did.
Have they changed the indicators on the new GS as well? I love the old BMW indicator system, couldn't be easier to use, no need to dislocate your thumb to reach and oddly placed switch.
I hope you do enjoy it. I'd love to have one.

The GSA power delivery is a little more restrained, doesn't quite bark as much, so I'm finding mid corner speed and acceleration is down a little, but I just need to ride the bike for a few thousand km. The BMW suspension feels more remote, whereas the KTM felt like my hands on the ground.
Handling for a bike weighing more than a quarter of a ton is still fantastic, and low speed handling is the best of any bike I have ridden. Indicators are still the "special" BMW ones, but I find I'm getting better at using them. 2011 still has the BMW indicators.

Whereas on the KTM you ride the top end power, on the GS you ride the midrange.

Yeah a bit further down the track there will be pictures. Its taking a while 1 day at the weekend and the odd evening. Life goes on. So far its like this sit down and trawl all the information available.IE what other people have already done. Sit at the computer for hour after hour drawing up a frame concept and then print out pieces to see if they will actually fit made a jig turned up a steering head little lathe took forever cut all the plates required this is footrest plates steering head plates engine mounts etc etc now I have to turn up all the spacers to mount plates to the block the list goes on then there will be cut the tube and shape no hurry but if I show you now I will have to shoot you. Top secret :yes::yes:
Good luck with your project. There are now alot of the 450s dropping there guts so the rolling chassis are turning up at reasonable prices. 300mm of travel that has got to be good.

For a while those tanks were unavailable and the only way to get one was to find an old G/S tank or get the Kalahari tank to fit the R80 Basic and they were pricey. The Euro has gotten better in the last couple of years tho.

Apparently it got found pushed into the bushes not far from the backpackers. Maybe after banging their shins on the jugs a few times they gave up? The thieves can't have been that sharp as I'm guessing it wouldn't have taken much to hotwire.

Answer is slightly muddied by the varying spec levels. There are the base models, but in NZ for example, but I know the GSA comes with the two extra packages by default (not sure on the GS). ie, stuff like ABS, ESA, LED indicators etc etc.
Main differences are:
- 20L fuel tank on GS, 33L tank on GSA
- crash bars standard on GSA, nothing on GS
- pannier racks on GSA standard, nothing on GS (GS panniers don't need racks either)
- cast rims for GS, spoked rims on GSA (but still tubeless). Identical rim sizes tho
- small screen on GS, larger screen on GSA
- GSA has an altered first gear, better for off road, rest of the gearing between bikes is identical
- Higher seat heights on GSA than GS
- More ground clearance on GSA than GS
- handguards on GSA standard, extras on GS
- GS is lighter than GSA
Certain things on the GS can be modified (even including replacing the tank), but realistically, once you want enough of the features of the GSA, just buy the GSA... they're excellent bikes :niceone:

- More ground clearance on GSA than GS
Which presumably indicates the shocks and possibly front staunchions are longer.

& the GSA I was told by BMW CHCH that they came standard with 21' along with all the other stuff you said
The R1200GSA definitely is rated for 33L, but if I squeeze it in, and don't leave it overnight, parked up etc, I can get more like 35-36L.
Tyres are 110-80-19 and 150-70-17... I know, as I've put a couple of sets on already

Awesome, thanks for that.
The GS I am waiting to come up has crash bars & spotlights, expanding luggage, spoked wheels, larger screen, handguards, aftermarket seat, plus Akropovic muffler.
It also has ABS/ASC, heated grips etc, so its mostly a GSA I guess.
It has 64k on it & is very tidy, any guesses on what it may be worth?
