I think I'll head via Moana to Blackball for a look around and see who's still hanging around at the pub after lunch, haven't been there since I went to look at my great grandfathers house after he died many, many, many years ago

Jacksons to Stillwater is sealed, just be aware the route has turn-offs ... don't take the right turn-off ... and you may end up in strange locations. It IS sign-posted though. But read the map first ...

just turn off at jacksons, thru to brunner- stillwater, up to nelson creek and thru to kopara that way, all sealed to a fair way past nelson creek, then a good hard packed gravel road ( better than arthurs pass road works). You'll be sweet safe ride.

Overcast but not raining here in Methven, just about to pack the bikes and head off.
Left Riviera of the South yesterday in blazing sunshine, had to stop in Dunners to put jerseys on, rain on the Kilmog then warmer and o'cast but no rain until 10km from Methven.
We'll fill-up @ Springfield and then again at Greymouth.
See y'all @ Kopara if not before:Punk:

I was however able to bring my old Bessy with me. I was rapt that so many shots were true and hit the gong.

Im home, safe in sound , wet from the rain, blasted from the norwester
and happy to have spent the past three days with some awsome people.
Awsome food, Awsome party. Awsome ride/
Flip, bessy was just the beast , pity you ran out of powder I would loved to have had a couple more bruses from her, loved that weapon.
Musket Training Camp Kopara, we all know now how to prime load and fire flintlock and percussion cap muskets! Yeah, big bangs, big balls of smoke, and targets demolished!
Spuds1234
13th December 2009, 14:13
Subike pretty much summed things up nicely.
Myself and Sexy Lexy had a ball of a time. No dramas on the way home, did get a bit wet but couldnt get the wet weather gear off fast enough in Springfield. It was so hot compared to the Coast.
Anyways here are a few pics that I took. Excuse the poor photography skills. Also that rooster sure knows how to line up his hens.

Just made it home! Despite the weather and the 5 star accomodation we had, I had an absolute blast!! Big thanks to Shrek, Steve and GB, Timg and JM for doing a fair bit of the cooking!!!
However the SV did not like the rain. Decided not to fire on all cyclinders not long past Springs Juction, so basicly had to go 60KM all the way to hamner. From there it sometimes started. Looks like the bike will be in bits very soon.
Fantastic time, cant wait to see the picks of pink panther!!

And here at Hanmer, what a wet ride from Refton!
Met SDU and Ricksta at Springs Junction then the Wellington boys at Hanmer, they claimed they were only visiting the hot-pools but I'm sure they were there to ogle the sheilas in the bikinis....and later they visited our cabin for an hour or two.
Off to Tekapo today, you Canterbury Rabble need to sort out your weather 'cos I'm sick of riding in wet-weather gear. (especially as my 'water-proof' leggings now have a horrendous rent in the arse of them)

Yup. Great weekend! Rode in heavy rain most of the way to Springfield where I stopped for a feed just as the 3 Wellington boys were leaving. Wind was so strong I could hardly stand, so the nice man at Ned's diner suggested I put the bike in the shed with the big jet-boats so it wouldn't blow over.
Met NH, RM @ co at the petrol stn and led off, expecting them to catch up, but missed the turn-off and went to Darfield, so I guess they passed me.
Stopped for a coffee with a friend at Grumpy's camp near Geraldine, then home via the main drag. Ran into rain just before Waikaiouiti(sp) which was so heavy the gutters couldn't cope so sheltered under a shop veranda.
The rest of the trip was uneventful with the road drying out about Blueskin Bay. Home at about 9.15.

I went up to Christchurch on the Friday night. Was offered a bed at KiwiPhoenix's place, for an early start on the Saturday. I had offered her a ride to Kopara some time ago and she accepted. Heading off in "strong" winds .... (thinking at least its NOT raining ....) That didn't come 'till the Bealy flats ...
A stop for coffee and nibbles at Arthurs ... and with the rain easing (yeh right) we headed off over the "hill". It was "a little damp". But it was the most enjoyable wet day ride I've ever had. (must have been the company I had ... ) Turned off at Jacksons, and took the Lake Brunner route to the Grey city. Gassed up and headed out to Blackball for lunch. But before we left we met up with the pair on the Thruxton and the Duc.
Donna hadn't been round "the short block" before ... so she suggested we go that way home. I agreed ... only a few extra hours to get home (what is time eh !!!) A very cruisey trip through to Springs ... food and coffee. AND gas. Light rain, with brightning skies towards the Lewis Pass ... looking good. WRONG... The (heavy) rain stopped about the works camp, but started again a bit later ... but not as bad. In sight of Hamner ... BLUE SKY ... but the wind started with a vengence. Tail wind ... I can deal with that ... but Donna's shreiks as we get blown around ..... must get ear-plugs .
We observed a few funny (stupid) cage drivers passing efforts ahead of us, and just backed off and let them go.
Dropped Donna off, and with no sign of the wind dropping ... I headed south.
On the north side of Timaru I pulled into a gas station for fuel and a break from the wind. Parked there was a Orange KTM 990 ( the 2nd one I'd seen that weekend) ..... WRONG ... it was the 1st one I'd seen (in Kopara). And RM's day was not going well. "Fuel issues" ... he may explain later... I hung round and helped as best I could, and followed him south incase of further bother occuring. After tea in Oamaru while the sun set... we continued south. I turned off at Palmerston, and arrived home at one minute after midnight. 2 hrs 15 min's from Oamaru to my place. (227 km's)
A long day....

Hi all, it was great to meet you lot, it was the best time I’ve had in years. You really know how to show a guy a good time. There I was just hanging around and thinking here goes another wet boring weekend, but how wrong can a guy be ... O for orrsome man!
That Victory was a great ride, thanks for that xknuts, and as FQ said earlier, I’m sorry about the stains, but I’m sure they’ll clean off OK.
Hey Dangerous, how did you get your name, you were a real pussy cat, easiest lay I’ve got in a while, not the tightest though, but hey thanks anyway.
Oh and thanks ladies, you gals were great too.
I woke up a bit crook on the Sunday, and with a hell of a sore back – probably ‘cos of where I slept the night, man that was uncomfortable wedged in there. I was feeling a bit queezy coming back down through Arthurs on the way back, so needed to stop for a chuck, heh heh. Ahh well them’s the breaks I guess when ya stay up drinkin’ with the young ones ... eh D
Thanks everyone for sending me the photo’s of me - I stuck a few of them in my album if you want to go have a look.
So anyway thanks for letting me tag along and I look forward to many more adventures with you all.

Hope the chooks get over the shock
We ran out of the rain past Bealey and stripped the wets off at Springfield. After a coffee and a bite we headed up the inland route to Hamner Springs for a good soak in the hot pools. Had a good run thru to the ferry this morning and now home and happy.

It took some planning but an awesome 5 days of riding, fab company, laughter till it hurt, & memories to treasure.
Thursday 10th 7am; At the Dunedin Fruit Wholesalers looking for my carton of pre ordered cherries. 1 1/2hrs later I departed Dunners without any cherries! :angry2: :headbang:
Petrol reserve light came on well North of Timaru, so slowed to save KM's and reached Tinwald Shell dead on empty. By pure chance met a fellow Vicster at the pumps, swapped emails as ya do.
Still looking for cherries for the Spitting Comp & found some on the CHCH bypass.
Friday 11th 8.30am; The Woodend Group (Billyboy, GB, FQ, mista, HOT, timg, & xknuts) departed collecting Subike, Goblin & Doc at Waikari. Well, I shud rephrase that, I stopped to exchange niceties coz the bunch rode on past. We 4 caught up at Springs Junction. With our wets still on and rain still threatening we pushed on to Murchison. Stinkin hot we all opted to shed our wets quickly & eat drink n be merry. While we advised Subike on how to fix his petrol leak.
Leaving Murchison I thought the whole group was aware of flashing headlights warning of :Police: but Subike got picked off the back for speeding which I was not aware of until reaching Inangahua. My 1st ride in the Buller Gorge, cant wait for a dry run
While waiting for Subike it was on with the wets again, reached Reefton, off with the wets. Departing Reefton on with the wets again and this time it paid off. Steady Westcoast rain which did not let up.
Billyboy n I turned off at Nelson Creek & reached camp later than the others to be told the VIP suites were taken, but he did have the "Possum Hut" and it had 1 powerpoint!! LOL As it turned out it was a luxury.
Bring on the Friday night frivolities

Well what an awesome weekend. It started on Friday afternoon when Liv & I loaded up the bikes and headed through Arthurs Pass. It was windy as hell all the way and the heavy rain started at Bealey. I was miserable when we stopped at Jacksons. I didn’t think the trip could get any worse. We headed off again after a drink and a bite to eat and rode past Lake Brunner, through Moana to Stillwater. Things were looking up!! What a nice road. And the weather even relaxed…a little. When we made it to the camp I didn’t care that our cabin smelt funny, didn’t have any power, didn’t have any hot water, had holes in the ceiling and was, in fact, the storage room…it was dry!!
So, despite the weather keeping it up all weekend I had a great time. It was great to see some of the Welly crew again (one day I’ll make it back there with my bike). I’m stoked to have made it to the famous Blackball Hilton (can tick that one off). I had a blast firing the black powder guns (cheers Phil, Doc & co.). And I’m glad I kept my arse away from Roger all weekend (sorry Roge, I just don’t swing that way, despite all the talk about gay bars).
Cheers for a great weekend guys and gals

Said 'wet looking' couple almost became the 'pounded to death' couple after being stuck in a horrendous hail-storm near Geraldine!!
Stones about the same diameter of a $2 coin fair hurt - like being machine-gunned by a paintball gun - and that was AFTER we had stopped and were cowering over our bike tanks!
And even afterwards we couldn't move for ages due to the 20mm or so coating of ice/stones on the road - couldn't even see the edge of the road etc and as slippery as Rogers whatsit...

Hi all, had a great weekend, always love bike trips to the south Island but pity about some of the weather this time.
Finally had a chance to put faces to some of the names I see in this forum but trying to remember all of them might be a little difficult although some stood out and will be hard to forget. Will need to make further trips south I suppose.
The black powder, and that little "red neck" bar added a bit of extra entertainment to the weekend as well as the wild life wandering the camp.
As the pic above shows the weather on the return journey was a little kinder than some of you got.
Good to catch up with phoenixgtr and scumdog again.

Saw the rabble Coming back through Taylorville........ Good thing the handsome souther man and his lovely lady on the bright orange bike recognise their mates when they see them....
RQ will NOT wave furiously next time :Pokey::Pokey:
Oh you say the nicest things - but you may be due for another eye check
Yes I heard about the fuel issues...
Hmmmm - yes well - a big thank you to FJ Rider who lent assistance especially in laying the big orange on its side to siphon the last of its tank and then waiting to see if it would go (which it did after a few false starts and clouds of foreign smoke....) OK Ok - what did I do???? I did what I have heard others have done and always thought to myself "how do they do a dumb thing like that.........." ----- I managed to absentmindedly put about 13litres of diesel into the big Katoom. Walked into the Timaru Shell sevirce station to pay for it and the girl says "does your bike really run on diesel" - my reaction to this was better left unrecorded
Anyway the attendant was really good - rung a guy working in a nearby paint shop where I got a suitable length of hose (also free) and she supplied a small 5litre can to start draining it into. I ended up with several mouthfuls of diesel - not pleasant and various remarks about "diesel breath" were made for a while afterwards.
FJ Rider showed a much better technique in siphoning (mis-spent youth??) once we had it laid down on each side (twin tanks) and once we'd got all that we could out it took 17.5 litres to fill - hmmm - it holds 19
It did start but once the diesel rich stuff at the bottom got in it didn't run well at all and would stall each time I tried to rev it. We perserved quietly, let it idle for a while, revved it occasionally and it seemed to start getting better as it got a less diesel rich mix. Eventually it was running well enough to head off - would still blow a diesel cloud if I revved it and FJ Rider reckoned he could smell it for a while but by the time we got to Oamaru it was running pretty well as normal but I filled the tank again to provide some more dilution and it was as good as gold from there on.
I still think back to how I managed to do this - I do own a diesel SUV and am used to using a diesel pump but they are usually different enough to be obvious even if your head is somewhere else. These bowsers hooked up from the sides rather than the front and they just weren't as obvious in their markings as they usually have been. Anyway, I'm going to be bloody careful not to do it again!!
As well as FJ Riders assistance we also had an offer from a guy from Dunedin who called in with bike on the back of his Commodore ute - he was quite keen to load the ktm onto the ute and us to drive down while he rode his bike. So thumbs up to that fella too - its a friendly world this biker community.

We enjoyed our weekend in spite of the weather and getting the worst dump of a bloody cabin on the whole site - actually if I took the Princess to stay in a place like that again.......?????? Anyway next year it is down this way so we'll have no excuse for not organising something better.
We certainly got torrential rain through Arthurs on the way home - but the winds after Porters Pass were far worse to deal with. I think that is the most "side of the tyre" wear I have ever got riding through Canterbury. The thing that amazed me was getting hit by gusts from both sides in short succession.
We ducked down to have lunch with cuzzies near Hororata and then retreated to SH1 thinking it might not be as severe as the inland route. Turned back up to Geraldine for a break and then the final fuel stop in Timaru turned into a bit of a drama. Had dinner with FJ Rider in Oamaru to let the sun go down and then put on the wet suits again as much for warmth as anything - the roads from Palmerston to Dunedin were very wet but the sky had cleared and it was bloody cold. Got back to Dunedin about 11pm and glad to be back.
It was certainly a day of challenging riding
Enjoyed the catching up and meeting people - I'll post a couple of photos next time once I've shrunk a few of them

So it seems the Westcoast ride to Haast & onwards wasn't so bad after all. Yes, it was wet, but still warm and a change of socks & gloves at Franz Joseph
kept me comfortable the whole way. :2thumbsup
BUT theres a rail / road bridge somewhere just South of Kumara that I entered slightly toooooooooooooo Faaaaaaaaaast and crossed up, bloody near dropped the Jackpot on the rails, ended upon the right hand side only to jump the rails at the opposite end. :dodge: Scary stuff!
Just had Cheshire Cat (Marc & Joelle & the mutt "Tahu") stay over for a night in Dunners. Heading to Golden Bay the long way. Great company, cheers Guys. :grouphug:

so now to catch the little fucker.
So... I decided to let the dogs in on the going ons and that Roger had been eating their K9 bickies, and that if they ever want to se a beef bone ever againg they need to find were the pink flee bag hides out in the day time... so they went on the hunt and just before dusk they cornered something high up in the silver bertch.
Now... this is when I remember my musket training from last sunday at Kopara, so I dashed for the garage and made up a sling shot from the Buell drive belt and Guzzi valves. training paid of, one shot and the farking thing fell from the tree, the dogs attacked under order and detained Rog till I got there. Over night the pimk thing was held at Doberman cells under close guard.
Now cuffed and straped back in the truck this little shit was ready to head back over the hill he came.

Oh my, i still have not gotton around to posting pictures and the like, with over 300 I have whittled them down to around 170, but is that still to many??
It was a fab weekend that no doubt will be remebered for along time to come as all the previous rallys.
Since the second rally I gave bought along chicken kababs to share, since last year SteveW also added to that, and it appears all the food goes down well, and most likely much need to absorb the liquid intake.
All the stuff I bring I have to buy, but never ever expect to be compensated for. Jantar came up to me at the BBQ this year and asked about it, I told hime, not to worry, he said we would be seen right. (some people just dont listen)
BUT I was humbled when a hand full of gathered monies was presented to me. At that moment I thought, I cant take this, as I stuffed it in my pocket!!!!
My son a few years ago become very sick with hemolytic uremic syndrome, which put him in Starship for near a month. Pictures below of that time

Hence I have put that money given for food as a donation to kidney kids, which was near $50.00. I have noted in the submission that the money was gathered at a kiwibiker rally weekend.
So thank you people. And there will be more of the same next year, ya gotta keep ya belly topped up.

kidney kids is a great organisation. But one not a lot of people know about. they work quietly to raise money. They have a great kids Christmas party and fund raising events through the year. Most of the kids go on to have ongoing renal problems into adult hood. So I am going to put in a plug for these patients. Please consider becoming a donor on your licence. I have seen what a difference a transplant can make in the quality of someone's life.
On a different note. I hope everyone has a great Christmas and New Year.

He's very happy to be back. Back that is to sleeping 17 hours a day as dogs do. We spent three days just beyond Motuaka for some sun and sand trying to avoid DOC 'No Dogs' signs. As we seemed to be doing throughout the trip. He hated the Ferry the most howling his head off.
I dropped the bike all loaded up with a full tank at about 2 kph doing a U turn outside a fire station there. Didn't do any damage, but T jumped out smartish and millions of firemen rushed out to help. Hope it didn't go into their books for accident stats and it makes the Harley and the Honda one all for the trip
