We have had more nominations than the maximum number of voting options. I have therefore combined some options and left a few off as they are very close to another option. This is a multiple option poll so you can vote for more than one location. Please only vote for locations that you would be prepared to travel to.
Edit: The Takaka option should include Mapua.

My favourite spots are blackheads. Y'know those ones that you can just squeeze and squeeze until you have a big long yellow worm lookin' thing hanging off yer face.
Seriously though - I voted Haast coz I can get there without dropping my bike on gravel and can ride there and back without losing so much oil that I need to top her up again.
Any further than that and I need to carry a bottle of 10W50.

You make seem so wrong to have to add oil.
One litre for 150 miles use to be what I needed for my bike a few years back...
Oh, and ain't Haast a tad far south??

Have all these spots been OK'd as having what we need?? - can't be stuffed trawling through all the old posts on this topic but I recall some doubts being expressed whether some of them had enough room, cabins, space without anyone else etc etc
A brief description of each would help - otherwise I guess the random choice thing will have to do:doh:

KB Rally - 2009. Suggestions as to where to hold it.
So far they have all been the 2nd week of December.
if we keep it the same all the time then every one knows & can book their time off etc...
Nothing wrong with the 2nd weekend in December
Absolutely, because I've got to book so far out or the boss will just to me.
these ^^^^^ were some of the comments made when a discussion was had on an earlier thread
edit: subike, Mrs Shrek & me are off this Sat to the land of "Far Far Away" to check out the natives & will report back :wavey:

One thing to bear in mind - Sandflies.
Of the four top-rated choices so far, only Takaka is likely to be endurable due to the little fuckers. I realise this is going to brand me as a softie - but being eaten alive by tiny flies is going to have some impact upon how much I'll enjoy sitting around a paddock drinking booze and talking bullshit. Unless of course people expect we'll be riding from dawn to dusk - then it isn't an issue.

West Coast pharmacies have a share in the insect repellant plant & the sandflies are a hybrid breed ie: (man made)
but if you start eating vegemite now you might have enough home made repellent in your system by the time Dec gets here

Standing in the smoke of a fire helps to repel thoese pesky things... but if enough of the "bottled fluids" are consumed...

Don't worry :whocares:
Shrek and I fought bravely :2guns: and after Shrek realigned the cannon (see pic) were able to fight off the big beasties.
Put helmets on and visors down and beat a hasty retreat before the hungry blighters could regroup.
P.S. Would not let Shrek take cannon home, so that others could use it! :done:

Well the poll closes tomorrow, and if you have voted you will see that the results make Nelson Lakes 1st choice, followed by Blackball & Haast a close
2nd. :second:
Now while that may seem democratic, the real test is whether any of those sites are suitable for our needs, and this is up to our self appointed organisers "Shrek, Mrs Shrek & Subike" who appear to have put their hands up to help. :niceone:
We have been spoilt with our last 3 events which have just got better & better, but our expectations should not keep rising or we will end up staying @ sanitised motels with noise limits & other restrictions etc. :niceone:
We need a camp to ourselves, accommodation for 40-60 approx, & $ per night @ the lower end $20 - $30pp. :done:
Thanks Shrekkies

Blackball is out coz the accom is too $$$$ 1st hotel 55pp pn B&B 2nd Hotel $20pp pn & the hall would have to be hired for the hole W/E & the community centre is another building & then there is the domain for tents in another area
all in all to spread out & to $$$$ would also allow the local D/H's to rockup
there is a camp ground at charleston but may have to share with Tourist's so there would be some resrictions waiting on a reply
at the moment Kopara has what we want & the Bar prices an't bad eva

after spending a weekend at Kopara 3 years ago,
I have trouble remembering the sandflies.
either they were all on holiday or they had a big mozzie net covering the village.
What I do remember is
we had a wicked party in a real old west coast pub,
so old the bar was a slab of wood on two beer barrels
the barman had flintlock pistols in his belt and wore a possom skin hat.
The bouncers were armed with black powder flintlock rifles
the bar maid had a full length dress on ,, but the cleeeeeevvvvaggeeee!!!!
The huts are warm and dry, the showers DO have hot water
and the road there and back is a fun ride even if it is hard packed gravel.
Cooking?
electrickery does exist in the kitchens, but you can cook on an open fire if you like.

Best insect repellent I have found is baby oil and Dettol.
Good for small children as well I am informed. Better than covering them in poisons.

D, you will really need to find a map which shows a bit more detail that the whole world. You can get to Kopara from either the Jacksons/Lake Brunner end off the Arthurs Pass rd (47.7km) or from Ngahere half way between Reefton and Greymouth (34.9km). It is not a main highway (hard packed dirt for most of the way) but no problems for any bike.
Magic. A leisurely ride through thick bush (beech etc) past a lake or two out to the end of beyond. Haupiri, a little past Kopara, is the end of the road and has a bunch of old logging stuff and sawmill.
Mr. Cooper, the head of the Cooperite cult/community have their property in the area. There was a book about him released this week I believe (this is NOT an invitation for this thread to go :Offtopic: )

Best insect repellent I have found is baby oil and Dettol.
Good for small children as well I am informed. Better than covering them in poisons.
At the Bushmans centre in Pukekura (not far south of Ross) on the south island west coast. Is a mossie they captured and stuffed. Then hung it out to dry. It now doubles as an "open" sign. If you see it... they're open. "Repellants" are measured in caliber... not content.
Pictured is the one I'm talking about.
The 'Puke pub is just across the road. Not a bad stop.

to get to the pub,
you get out of your sleeping bag, head to the biggest building on the site.
Say a few nice words to the barmaid
and get your poison.
There is a licenced pub on site run by the Black Powder Gun Club.
The last few k's to the site are a hard packed shingle road, but dont let that worry you, as even harleys can survive it with no worries.
There will be no need to fight over beds either, as there are plenty of cabins, and at least three dorm houses that sleep 10 each.
Cooking is no prob either, a full sized kitchen at our disposal.
And we can have a big camp fire as there is a place for that tooo.
As long as we dont see self made pizza appearing at the fire side,
And D , keep you pants ON this time!!

All respect to them for playing their own stuff, however...
Going by rally and KB-do experiences so far I'd be willing to wager a sizeable amount that people won't be so much in "music appreciation" mode as in "get wasted and rock out to the well known tunes (done well mind)" mode.
That said, if they came and played their own stuff - but weren't afraid to mix in the odd cover it could be quite good. I'm just thinking about the number of times I've been to music festivals where upcoming bands, so busy playing only their own original stuff, absolutely fail to get the crowd going besides the one or two well known hits they might have...
