Mike thanks for organising these travel details.
Why is there's always someone wants wants to do something different? God help the other passengers with those DerveRts lurking around the fairy in the early hours of the morning. :moon:
OK, sorry about the delay in replying, I had to confirm the following arrangements with the ferry master first.
Due to the factor Andy refers to, and the talking in the ranks in evidence at the top of the page, the following is in place for the two 0225 "early birds" before they will be allowed to ascend to the passenger accommodation:
they will swab down the rail and vehicle decks of the ship, using toothbrushes,
followed by:
ten laps of the vehicle deck, at the double, wearing full riding gear, including helmets, and holding a set of tyre levers (or a tyre pump) above their heads.

Although I have been riding for a while now, pretty much all of it has been day rides, so seeing how the NI invasion is my first big adventure(for me) I am curious about what to bring.
Do I need to bring any food?
will I need to get a sleeping bag, although i see the nurses home has linen if thats where we are staying.
Is hard or soft luggage best. Have both but am leaning to soft as the top box could break in a fall. (unlikely of course)
Should i bring my full or half full bottle of rum?
What do you guys take?

Yes, you will need toilet paper for Napolean Hill

We will stay at the nurses home (I will call them today to make sure they have some space) so you most probably wont need a sleeping bag.
I normally have some porridge sachets with me so that breakfast is easily sorted (and dinner if I'm desperate) . Apart from that I buy food as I go
I'll take my hard top box but have a soft day pack for the knarlier bits and leave the top box at Reefton.
I'll also have soft panniers (I carry too much shit) that I'll leave in Reefton.
Sometimes these places dont have towels/flannels/soap so I always bring my own.
you bring a full bottle of rum and I'll bring a full bottle of coke and we'll share - that sounds fair to me......
Nordie - why bring a sleeping bag?
accomodation for Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd is confirmed as being:
THE OLD NURSES HOME ACCOMMODATION
104 Shiel St, Reefton, New Zealand
Phone:64 3 732 8881
Phone to make a booking - say you are with the kiwibiker group.

be good to have you along
most motor camps will provide bedding for an extra fee ($5 normally) so I don't take a sleeping bag to save the space
a road tire will limit you but wont stop you having fun.

Andy Mac

Joe
Paladin
Everybody but Dave and Joe are requesting the Thursday 1825 sailing heading South. Joe and Dave wish to travel on the 0225 that morning. We will all be on the Sunday 1805 ex Picton home.
Including me that is 8 bikes and riders.
I am now waiting for Faye at IIL to confirm these bookings. Each individual will then get confirmation from me and special instructions (both by PM from me) on how to pay the IIL direct, by cheque and mail or phone and credit card. Note that the method of paying will be specific to our special deal - you have to follow my instructions to use this deal, you cannot just ring the 0800 number and talk to anybody.
Regards,
Michael

A question for those familar with the route. How aggressive do we really need to be with tyres? A review of MarkS's last trip photos shows much of the tracks to be gravel or rock. How much mud is there?
Stuck an MT21 on for the KCAR ride & have mostly rooted it. Didn't really need it except for the wet version of Fishers Track. Knobs have shruck fro 15mm to 5-6mm in the centreline. The MT21 wore badly because I dropped pressure because I couldn't get it to hook up properly in gravel. It started to chunk. In mud it was good. Wear settled down when I upped the pressures again, but traction suffered. Given the wear rate, I probably won't go there again.
Given the mileage of this trip, & the road work to be done, can I get away with a 2/3rds worn MT21 at raod pressures (don't think it'll last), a 1/2 worn MT70 (do the mileage easy, but in mud?), or should I be looking at a new tyre, & if so which one? Cost is an issue for this trip.
So the choice is 33% MT21, 50% MT70, new MT70, new E09. How deep are the knobs on the E09 anyway?
I'll leave the front MT21 as in (still 80% good).
Cheers

I'll have a 2/3 worn MT21, it should be fine (but I have an old trackmaster to chuck on if we get a bit of rain).
Mrs jatz did big river on a half worn trailwing, and I've done it on an E-08 at road pressure.
So long as it's round and black and holds air you'll be fine:whistle:

Having a good front tire is by far the most important on the tracks we will be on. The only exception would be if we go to Napoleon Hill/Mosquito Creek in which case you would be totally fooked with a girlie back tire (lots and lots of big round slippery river stones).
Depending on what the majority want its likely we will not do Napoleon Hill/Mosquito Creek but instead do Big River and Waitahu River on the Saturday as I don't think we get time on Friday for Waitahu River.
I'll have a 60% worn D606 on the front and either a 90% rooted D606 or 70% worn E09 on the back.

What boat yous on bluebridge or rail.
I went over a couple of weeks ago and used both ferries.
Bluebridge only had lengths of rope with a loop on one end and no tie downs so you need to use initiative or have a truckie in the group.
Rail has rope and tiedowns, but all but one of the tiedowns was rusted and useless.
Rope is the better option imho
I always tie mine down on the stand side so there is 3 points of contact and have never had an issue and tbh it would have to be bloody rough to tip a bike over even if it wasn't tied down. Can someone volunteer to do this as an experiment please.
Box'a'bits

Interislander. Best to take your own tie downs. The Waikawa camp may be able to hold them until Sunday (we've got them to do that yrs ago going to the Monkey).
I tend not to tie down bikes on side stands, in order to prevent the stand base cracking. I put the tie-downs on loosely first, then stand the bike upright, put the stand up, then tighten the straps to hold it up. :calm:
Once saw a sorry result of a newbie tying down a GN250 next to a gang members Harley. After the sailing we fortunately we got down before the gang member, and put things quickly to rights ...no damage, but I guarantee the 17 yr old pimple would have been flattened by the Harley owner if he had seen what resulted. :pinch:
Thanks guys for comments on the tyres. Joe, thanks for the offer, but I'm on an 18 rear. The DR is a 17.

It's been a while since I bothered taking my own tie downs, but I'm happy with doing truckies hitches etc. Dirty ropes are fine, in fact they have more friction than new clean nylon which can be bloody slippery.
One of the boats had actual cam-style strap tie-downs (bluebridge I think), it wasn't immediately obvious how they worked; the obvious way was wrong and they slipped when pulled against one other, but one would usually hold the bike by itself - bit of a gotcha. A quick re-thread and they worked fine and dandy despite being mostly rusty. Out of ~20 of them, only one was broken, but that was a while ago now.
Chock the front wheel, a pair of ties on the lower triple-clamp to hold the bike upright and against the chock, then one more at the back (not so tight) to stop the rear bouncing around - just like on a trailer. Job done. As Woody says, and a load master said to me once, "mate if it's rough enough to shake that bike loose, you'll have far more important things to worry about!!" The thing you have to watch is oscillating motion working things loose.

All of us are travelling on the Arahura heading south and the Aratere north. The Kaitaki has recently introduced a fixed clamp arrangement for securing motorcycles – as the result of work by another motorcyclist in my design team at KiwiRail and the efforts of a former fellow rail engineer, now working for the InterIslander division of the company. I understand the other ships may introduce this system as well. Since we are not on this ship we won’t be seeing them!
I must have made 50 – 60 crossings with motorcycle over the years and usually carry my own tiedowns and use these and a combination of what is there on the ferry deck. There will usually be a mix of mainly hooked ropes and a few “Aerofast” tie downs. InterIslander have given up on the tie downs because of theft. I don’t mean a few, I mean pretty much the entire set put out in the morning, stolen throughout the day, every day they did it. This is our fellow motorcyclists guys.
Anyway, does not matter. You leave your gloves on with the ropes, so you don’t get dirty hands. Helmet and jacket off, only tyre changing seems to build up more of a sweat than tying bikes down in the hot vehicle deck! I always take my own tie downs to provide the basic securing because I am useless with knots. I have a set of four “Aerofast” roof rack tiedowns, these are half size with a small cam and no ratchet, they fasten in a loop and you pull on them to tighten. Wound up the set of four is about the size of the palms of both hands. I slap rubber bands around them to pack them up.
It does not matter whether the bike is on side or centre stand. I always find it easier to put a big BMW on the centre stand though, this allows the bike to be stable while assembling the tiedowns. There are rubber wedges for jamming under car or truck wheels and one of these under each of a big bikes back and front wheel works well with the ropes or tie downs to secure everything. Smaller bikes are easily tied down trailer style, with the stand up and suspension compressed.
Bottom line is you can certainly manage with what is provided, so long as you take your time. You don't need the internet to help, just show up!
For what it is worth, Arahura is “soft” ship, it rolls gently back to vertical so accelerations are lower and cargo less likely to shift!

Be good to get the twins together at last  I've just booked a room at the old nurses home ,I think its a twin (theres that word again) so if you get stuck theres a bed in there.
Hot wires ? sounds like it could be a poor connection or earth ,or mabe even the reg rec ,is the battery boiling ?
Actually should start an @ owners thread to discuss this stuff

For what it is worth, Arahura is “soft” ship, it rolls gently back to vertical so accelerations are lower and cargo less likely to shift!
Michael
Apparently not since the last refit in Singapore. If what I've been told is true (and I have no reason to doubt the source) several hundred tons of steel were cut out of the vehicle deck in an attempt to get more trucks in, which has made the ship bow-heavy, even after dumping a lot of concrete into cavities at the stern. Net result the ship now carries LESS freight than before becuase of the 'ride quality". (that was a few months ago - they may have fixed it since then)

Check for bad connections in the charging circuit. Any resistance will be a cause of heating in the wires, etc. Pull the connectors apart and make sure they are shiney bright. (and if you were riding a Suzuki GS I'd say check the oil level, as engine oil is used to cool the alternator)

As to how this would affect the ROLL quality of the ship, I am at a loss to explain. There is more to why the Arahura was modified than your source has stated, starting with the fact that the ship was no longer going to be allowed to carry more than 400 passengers, half its original rating, due to the steady tightening of the SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) rules, which a ship that entered service in 1984 was eventually going to struggle to meet. It was not able to remain usefully in service in its 1984 configuration.

Roll quality of boats is influenced by both hull shape & the vertical centre of gravity etc.
Commercial ships have a flattish bottom & slab sides making them stable load carriers but not fast (high drag). Car carriers are the extreme box shape for maximum size for a light weight cargo.
Canoes with a round bottom are unstable because there is no resistance to rolling but low drag=easy speed.
Yachts use canoe hulls with keels (weight slung underneath) to keep them upright.
A good roll quality is when it gradually reduces from side to side - a boat is rolled by a wave to 2 oclock, it recovers to 10.30, to 1.00, to 11.30, to 12.
But if the centre of gravity is to low the boat recovers too quickly & is unpleasant to be on.
Commercial fishing boats are often converted into pleasure boats but because they are no longer carrying tons of fish near deck level they recover too quickly - a simple fix is too put a telephone mast (raises centre of gravity) and slows the roll.
When a yacht loses it's mast it is unbearble. Tons of lead suspended metres below the hull whiplash the boat upright. Crews are always seasick in dismasts.
I saw a ship capsize in Tonga harbour while unloading containers with its own cranes. Obviously they got their loading schedules wrong

Hi guys,
Obviously I'm not on this ride, but I have a big favour to ask........
Could one of you motley buggars carry Pooey the Adv bird on the ferry, to the mainland?
I'm picking him up off Anthrax today, and hopefully passing onto Phreaky Phil this weekend when he is in Raglan.
If someone could liase with Phil after this Sunday, it would be cool. Might pay to mention your intention on Pooey's thread on Adv rider.
Cheers.

Yeah, I had a pretty average day at the office also. Can't wait.
Picked up a new front tyre today. Don't even know what it is. Better go and have a look. It was cheeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaappppppppp, like a budgee.
Priced out a TKC80 and just about fell over backwards ($210ish..............for a front). The guy in the shop said he had a hardly used adventure tyre out the back he'd sell me for $50, so I grabbed it.

yeah, its good when that happens - I planned on saving my MT21 on the DB1k and putting on a crap cheap ass knobblie but in the end I ran the MT21 into the ground and saved the knobblie for afterwards - it was a mint rear tyre for like $80. hankook rallycross or some shit. but yeah, cheap and good. ps mt21's one the rear suck arse.

Re cheap front tyres - I got a Vee-rubber 3.00x21 model is v221 or 51P (there are a few different numbers on the sidewall). IIRC it was $70 or so from TSS and it's really good on the road and nearly as good on gravel. No noticeable wear after 2000 km.

ha, this thread has gone so off topic...riding to driving boats, to orgies and sleepingbags to tyres. :wari:
I'm running a vee rubber up front on the africa and it's bloody good. I ran a vee rubber rear on the DRZ though and it was fucken suicidal! no grip under throttle and no grip under breaking. even less grip in corners.,...it was cheap...but too cheap!

I'm running vee rubbers also. just put a 163 back on the front of the PD, has about 10000km and hardly looks worn $100. The R80 has some seriously knobbly Vee rubber, road legal but it must be only just. Thats lasting well though also and has been a good tyre and was only $60, both brand new.
Were average on the back though, disappeared as quick as a TKC 80 and was average grip.
E09's rock on the back. Have them fitted to both bikes.

Both bikes are now out of action.
The PD is in bits pending installation of a new front driveshaft boot, hopefully I can get that done this weekend. I also have new jets, jet needles & Ventura racks but they all might have to wait till after the south island trip.
I wheeled the G/S out this morning to ride to work. Start her up and all's good. After 30 seconds she stalls but thats ok, it's cold out and she's still cold and the choke was off.
I hit the button again and she winds over happily but there's no firing, not from either cylinder, not a cough. The gas tank is full as I filled it up last night. I jiggle the wires, pull the plug caps and re attach but all to no avail. All the other electrics are working fine.
Eventually the battery went flat and it was off to the train station for me.

As the group size is getting towards the largish end of things what do you guys think of using the cornerman system (https://secure.ktmtours.com.au/tours/cornerman.htm) for all 'non tar seal' bits?
I'm presuming that everyone will have maps and can find their own way to places like St Arnaud/Reefton/Nelson/Picton so on the sealed sections we could get by with infrequent regroups.
your thoughts?

you have a group lead bike. who should know where he is going.
every time he turns at a turn off on road, next bike behind waits on the turn off to show which way to go, he then rejoins the group when he see tail end charlie.
mark if you like to do this, i nominate my self as tail end charlie.
is a good way to keep the group rolling....
Balrog
17th May 2009, 11:51
I don't think they need to wait until the tail end Charlie comes along.
You just need to make sure the person behind you knows where to go.
If they can't see the person behind them, then they wait until they are sure the next person knows where to go.
Combine that with regular group catch ups and everything should be sweet.
Just my 10cents worth.
P.S
sounds a bit grim, but I think we all should have an ICE (In case of emergency ) number flagged in our cell phones.
Makes it a lot easier to contact the right people if something unfortunate happens.

Thats very generous of you Jo - thanks
While no one is supposed to pass the lead rider (I suppose that would be me - and I aint no rocket ship) I suspect if people know where they are going then its fine if they head off into the distance and just wait when they aren't sure where to go next (and if they get lost then fookem)
anyone think this is a bad idea????

I don't think they need to wait until the tail end Charlie comes along.
You just need to make sure the person behind you knows where to go.
If they can't see the person behind them, then they wait until they are sure the next person knows where to go.The problem is that this system less disciplined and in practice less effective than the cornerman system. The single biggest issue is that the last rider in a faster bunch of friends has to wait for the next slowest group to arrive... typically they get impatient/lonely and leave their post. Doesn't happen so much in adv riding but it still happens all too often. I know road/adv riders don't seem to like the cornerman system, usually 'cos they don't want to be separated from their immediate mates, but it works very well for trail/adv rides with larger numbers of disparate people.
With the cornerman system, you only have to recognise 2 bikes, lead & tail, which don't change. Position within the group is unimportant and overtaking never a problem. If they wish faster riders can move through the group, then be dropped at a corner, then move through the group again. Steady riders can just sit in the middle of the group, and never stop as long as they never become 2nd bike.
When you have gates that require closing, they become a 'corner' and there is no confusion about should-it-be-closed-shouldn't-it, because the cornerman would have either seen the lead rider open it, or be told when he caught up and got dropped on the 'corner' by the lead rider.
Even with maps & directions & most ppl knowing mostly where to go, the whole point of either system is to stop ppl falling through the cracks, for various reasons. So if a system is going to be used, it should be as reliable as we can make it.

im still happy to go at the back, and herd up the lost sheep.....:chase:
i know from the KCR there are 3 groups of riders.
faster ones want to be up front.if they end at the back they just pass ya to get back up front again.
the cruzzers in the middle in no hurry but still want to get there.
then the take it easy riders at the back.
but then ya can get speeders on the seal, but there not to fast on gravel,

its got nothing to do with me i spose but i think i would apppreciate the corner man system. The problem with the "next one stops" system is the whole group gets more and more spread out as everyone has to stop and restart and the slower guys all end up together down the back .Whatever system is used EVERYBODY has to know how it works.
ICE= in case of emergency
I really really hope(if fact i know that) you will guys have an awesome time !

I agree with Joe & Warewolf. The cornerman system worked very well at the KCAR. Basically it means that the overall group keeps a reasonable speed - there isn't a need for constant regrouping, and no one gets left off the back of the group (& potentially lost). It also means that if the leader & tail end charlie have cell phone contact, there is no confusion if there is an accident or breakdown. Keen to see it on this ride.
Cheers
Steve
I'm not a huge fan of the cornerman. From my experiences with it, it encourages people to overtake, as the faster riders always end up at the back. Some overtaking manouvres I've seen while adventure riding have been down right dangerous.
Not saying I'm an angel, and I probably take more risks than most, but I generally try to spend as little time as possible in the right hand lane, (growing up in the country, on narrow gravel roads, where every second vehicle was a stock truck, I learnt to always have a plan 'B', which usually involved the left hand ditch).
I'm easy for this ride though, as I don't know the area, so will be taking it quietly.

I lied.......
perhaps I should elaborate - we will hopefully doing the following in the following order:
Porika - moderate 4wd track with one nasty downhill bit which maybe those with roady tires or limited experience (or sore backs) should bypass
Breaburn - Matakitaki Rd - Maruia Saddle - West bank Rd - all a piece of piss
Big River - moderate 4wd - should be ok for everyone
Waitahu River - knarlier 4wd - which maybe those with roady tires or limited experience should bypass
The New Creek track - moderate 4wd - should be doable by all except maybe the last bit down to the river
I ripped my footpegs off last time on Big River and Waitahu River - they have a few bumpy bit that would reduce eddies old hard bags to dust

I'm with Jim & Bart on this. I don't see the need for a full cornerman system either. Many, if not most of us will have a map. As Joe said the guys coming over from the NI have all ridden enough together to know who the fast/cruisey/steady guys are. This isn't a one day ride; we have the evening before hand for each day's ride to talk about the next day and where we could have major regroup points as Jim suggested, or do it at brekky on the day!!!
I think Joe is pretty much planning on being tail end charlie whatever, and I don't have any choice but to take things easy cos of my back, so we'll be cruisin along takin it all in bringin up the rear I'd guess!
Chill!! It'll all be fine!!! We're gonna have a great time riding, takin in the scenery and meetin our SI brethren! And the long range weather forecast on metvuw is startin to look pretty good for us too!!!

I'm a fan of using the cornerman system. On the dustybutt we had a loose one that didn't work at all times. I personally like the thought that someone's waiting to make sure the group is together & taken the right way. No use having a sweep if someone has taken the wrong turn along the way. If the cornerman counts the group going along we know if someone is missing.

make sure no one is left behind or gets lost.
vote for corner man......1 for me
I think the vote is split between those that did the KCAR ride & those that didn't.
On the KCAR ride we had a large group, with riders of varying abilities. The overall pace of the ride was reasonably quick, given the ground we had to cover. I know I had no clue where we were about 1/2 the time. W/O the corner-man system we would have lost people through out the day, which in itself would have caused delays.
My vote is for this system that works very well in large groups.

... It also means that if the leader & tail end charlie have cell phone contact, there is no confusion if there is an accident or breakdown.....
Cell coverage will be patchy at best where you guys are going.
I'm considering grabbing a bike and nipping up to Reefton Friday night for Big River Saturday.

last time I was up big river I got a call from work and it was clear as a bell. That was telecom, and it was on a high part of the ride.
Cornerman sounds ok to me, as long as I am not tail end charlie. Do not follow well.

I vote for the Cornerman system, it just works.
Knowing that Joe will be Tail End Charlie means you can chill on your corner until you see his smiling mug.
Much better than tryng to guestimate was that no. 13 or 15 bike going past while you're having a piss? Must have been 15 cause no-one could be this far behind so I'm off. Unless they also stopped for a piss, put a jacket on etc.
And polite overtaking is the norm - but no 15 inch roosts :bleh:

I lied.......
Porika - moderate 4wd track with one nasty downhill bit which maybe those with roady tires or limited experience (or sore backs) should bypass
Note that when I traversed this, downhill and two up on my Dakar 650 in late 2007, we just got off and I walked the bike down the hard bit in first gear with the engine off. Anybody with concerns should remember this is always an option for difficult downhills, you don't have to be a "hero" and ride it down. I am certainly not and I use this approach a lot, even on the Pampera sometimes. The rest of the Porika Track is straightforward with great views and the loop is well worth doing.

Talk about stir up a hornets nest
How about this as a compromise:
Everyone is expected to have a map or know the route
Joe will be tail end charlie at all times (say if you are not happy with that Joe)
Picton to St Arnaud - open slather - leave in a group at 8 but go at your own speed/time - going to leave St Arnaud at 11 regardless if you are there or not so get there in time to have coffe and get gas etc.
Regroup at Howard Valley Rd turnoff from sh63 and run cornerman system till Springs Junction with regroups at Lake Rotoroa foreshore, Murchsion for lunch, Beginning of Maruia Saddle Rd and Springs Junction (coffee).
open slather - from Springs Junction to Reefton via sh7
open slather - with sensible regroups for Big River/Waitahu River (hard to get lost and only a few km's of road bits)
open slather - up hw63 and sh6 to New Creek Rd (just make sure you turn left immediately after the first bridge you cross after (about 20k?) Inangahua Junction where we regroup and start cornerman system while on track.
so basically if its all sealed road its open slather and if its off the beaten track its the cornerman system
anyone is welcome to pass me (your highly esteemed leader) at any time (I'm not quick and don't want to cramp anyone's style)
does this sound reasonable

My 2 cents worth ....... I used the corner man system on the KCAR because it had worked so well on other rides i had been on.
On the KCAR we had 26 riders with differing abilities. As has been said this system allows everyone to ride at their own pace and the group as a whole to cover more distance without lots of stops and waiting around, and if everyone uses the system properly no one can get lost.
It also provides a back up if someone has a puncture / breakdown / accident as the tail end charlie can be in contact with the ride leader to halt the rest of the group if required.
Anyway that my rave over with...................
Hope you guys have an awesome trip and the weather is kind to you :niceone:

Michael, what bike are you using this weekend?
Suzuki DR350. Saturday and Sunday may have some challenges and I don't want to have to skip these because I am on a 192 kg bike and don't wish to damage it or myself. My 2001 Dakar did 6 1/2 years of Adventure rides, with many offs. My 2007 one is still pretty shiny and I don't really want to be faced with taking it to a place beyond my confidence on Saturday. While I have been doing this for a long time, you could politely describe my approach as "cautious".
Stand by my comments about Porika though. It is a great diversion but has a washed out rough downhill road in one place, which can be walked, so nobody should be put off.
I did consider the Pampera for a bit of a laugh, but the road bit would have got VERY tedious! Wairau Valley at 75 km/h and even this seeming too fast!

Which Pampera? The 250 I rode a few times would do well over 100km/h quite happily on the beach, which saps power. Great bike, except for the forks. Everything my DR-Z250 did, the Pampera did better. Speed & performance wouldn't be an issue, but comfort might.

It is a 2003 250 I bought new. It will indeed reach a speed of 100 km/h but extended operation at such a speed will inevitably lead to serious engine damage (seizure). This was regularly reported back when these bikes were new enough to have a following on the internet. Vibration at 80 km/h is OK but seeps into your anatomy above this speed.
This bike is unique in my experience, now irreplaceable and not that easy to get parts for, hence I operate it with care and generally only when its unique abilities are required.

And Michael's idea of walking (or bulldogging) down the nasty south end of the Porika is a good one. The nasty bit is only 100-200m long and the rest of that track is just brilliant

One of my estemed collegues has just finished a project installing a set of fancy traffic signals on this bridge. This will be the only set of permanent traffic signals you will find once you leave the bright lights of Blenhiem till you reach Nelson as they are one of the first two sets of permanent traffic signals on the coast (the other set is at Fern Arch in the lower Buller) Turn very hard left immediatly as you go off the end of the bridge i.e. slow right down on the bridge.
Would like to join you guys but we are living on rice and water for the next while :msn-wink:

The original DB1k route goes both ways over the Porika. If you stand on the pegs and use a bit of due care it really isn't that bad. Balrog has riden his R1150GSA over and both my Bro and myself have ridden our XTZ750's over it (both ways) with no problems.
Nobody should be put off doing this track.

Another useful trick for snotty situations is to kill the engine, use your feet as outriggers and the clutch as a hand-operated rear brake. That way you can pick your feet up, pull the clutch and roll out of trouble if need be.

Not sure which bit you mean?
the middle bit of the descent down to Lake Rotoroa - from the corner with the awesome view of the lake down to a few hundred m from the lake.
I'm not saying this bit will be a problem to experienced riders but people of more limited experience need at least to be aware of it prior to doing it.
hopefully no ice this time

Woohoo, all paid up. I'd left it till now just in case I hadn't got a bike going.
Does anyone have a GPS route set up of where we are going? if so can they send it to me. Otherwise I'll sit down with mapsource and see if I can work out how to plug it in.
I mainly use the GPS to tell me where I've been rather than where I'm going so it's not something I've really used yet.

I wouldn't get too worked up over the porika. I can't remember the bad bit - was it where someones 1150 went over the side? Anyways don't stress about it.
I should mention now to those who may end up following me - don't assume I know where I'm going & as far as overtaking just line up & go for it.:niceone:
