its seriously cool

Bart is, I think, by far the most talented photographer out of us lower north island riders.

That may well be the case, but I did notice he failed to collect an image of the following. How a short person with a tall bike crosses a river with a deep hole near one bank:

Hi Michael

Sorry I have been a bit quiet, catching up on work and sleep - but I have been enjoying the posts and photos all week.

It was a great weekend with great company - a bonus with the weather and riding! Thanks guys and thanks Mark! Had an uneventful run back to Picton just ahead of Jim, Dave, Steve, Bart and Eddie. Being slow I kept moving and only saw them at St Arnaud and once we were on board.

Right shoulder and arm is sore. Luckily I can sleep on my left side after weeks with sore ribs on the left. You people are a bad influence.

Really pleased the InterIslander came through with the fares and was really good about changing without problems, so various of you could enjoy another day in the South. Sounds like Andy's "cheap" fare ended up being quite expensive (with his bonus day off) though! I will pass on our thanks to the marketing team.

Some more shots. Steve with Pooey's relatives. Nordie Boy skirting the ice at the Big River Mine site. Lunch at our Reefton "day base". Mark and I are very much aligned when it comes to coffee stops being a core part of Adventure Riding. . Jim awash in a mud wallow. He wanted me to hold his bike up while he changed sides. Still having dry boots at this stage I managed to do so by reaching from the shallows! The Sunday night crew on board Kaitaki and Dave sorting his tobacco. What he thinks is in there I don't know - a mystery prize or more broken DR parts?

We DO need to do this again. Something to begin organising next time we are in Toppy's.

Michael

And work out why I get that damned echo on the end of each clip :(

Great vids, makes me really wish I had made it to that ride.

They were great fun Chris - you would've loved it mate! In between the rivers were miles of awesome tracks, and very varied tracks too - the KTM would've been right at home!

do you think we missed a trail and got confused with the river bed?

it looks like the track continued to the north of the river?

unfinished business maybe?

Here's my track log, I got a bit further and there was no way I wasn't on the correct road... but so were all the downed/drowned trees and I could clearly see the road continue on the other side of the blockage.

Slightly out of order - the descent down the Porika Track, the Big River Mine Head, The site of Mrs Jatz's tank resculpture on the New Creek track, Eddie going towards St Arnaud.

Now roll credits...

Finally a big thanks to Marks for organising the trip, Michael for organising the ferry tickets, Junkman Joe for accomodation scouting (the Reeton Cabins were no where as bleak as Marks tried to point out - positively comfy), and the South Island crew for your company.

The issue with that is that the time you most need them, you'll be at the back of the group, away on your own, or have an odd size nut that we don't cater for (e.g. KTM rear axle nut) :slap::doh:.

I prefer to be self reliant, even if it does introduce some weight :innocent:.

I really want one of the bashplates with included toolkits both sides. That would take care of the weight issues (down low) & would mean more of a set & forget experience.

Too right! I think Bart himself was very lucky not to have seriously hurt himself, and the DRZ sure took a big hit in its stride, pretty darn solid bike I guess!

Speaking of which, has anyone got any experience with custom plastics. Underground id'd a source of windscreen plastic but after taking further panel damage last ride I'm keen to preserve the original plastics and fairing of the @ and replace em with a set of readily offroadable plastics - without it looking like a complete cut-up job. Might also work for Andy's TA fairing repairs?

yeah yeah, and all you "classic bike" enthusiasts / traditionalists just chill - you can have the original @ back when I'm done.

Bit different to the state of the front end of Andy's T/A with all that fibreglass after a similar off!

the road we were on was more open than the saddle road and Andy was "going for it" so speeds were likely higher plus the significantly higher weight of the transalp would make a big difference to they energy needing to be dissipated by the instant stop caused by landing in the culvert (it was well over a meter deep)

The front end took a really hard hard hit (full left lock allowed you to just about go straight ahead) and really would need total disassembly and careful checking for bent bits. Andy was making noises about possibly "enduroizing" the front due to a lack of parts and/or ridiculously high cost.

maybe we need a working bee at Andys place to attack the thing - I've got some black tape and nails.....

Yeah, it's really a far too expensive camera to be taking on bike trips. That's why I carry it in a backpack, so I soak up most of the vibration.

I was surprised there wasn't any real damage to the bike. The front wheel hit the bank square on, about a metre below the track, so it was like hitting a brick wall. Looking at the picture, the back end must have gone way up in the air to land on the uphill side. All I remember was rushing to get the bike upright, as petrol was pissing out everywhere.

Thanks to everyone who stopped to help.

All part of the fun. If you're going to push the boundaries, you've got to expect the occasional off. I'm not very well known for self control (which is why I don't ride 1000cc sports bikes any more).

Thats effectively what I was thinking.

Look at Eddieb's bike as a model. Probably more capable as a result of losing all the weight of the roobars & fairing, and still pretty cool looking. But not so stripped back that someone couldn't convert to PD if they could get a hold of the parts.

Mind you he is now struggling to get that XT600 headlight...:bleh:

Talking of which, anyone know what Andy's intention / progress is with repairs to the bike. I don't want to see him not riding just because the bike's got unresolved issues....

Progress report - SLOW. Its been too cold to be enthused to go out to the garage at night. I have disassembled the front fairing/headlight/instruments, recording which plug goes where & there are heaps. This area appears to have taken max impact & it all needs replacing. The bike shop hasn't yet got a parts list so we haven't started pricing OEM. The forks seem OK but I will drop them out this weekend to check - will probably replace the steering head bearings while it is all apart.

I'm thinking of putting on another headght & speedo to get on the road/permanently.
Nordieboy - do you like your Trailtech Vapour & what headlight are you using & why?

My wife is getting upset about my late nights on the internet checking out parts for sale on Ebay. She said the problem is I don't have multiple bikes in the garage. The seed is sown. :niceone:

Bloody wicked, you can get a DR!!!!

:first:

When you get parts and/or start work on the T/A, shout me if you want an extra pair of hands to help Andy! At the moment I have Mondays, Tuesdays & Saturdays all day free to myself! Errr, maybe not Saturdays = adv ride day! LOL!
But, yeah could come help Mon/Tue/Fri evenings too!

Happy to help if you want mate!

It's actually an Acewell speedo but if I did it again I'd get a Vapour for the engine temp bit.

The headlight is off an SV650 and it throws a better pattern, bolted right up with minimal fuss and looks much more betterer.
Along with being about $60 2nd hand.

Doing a headlight on another bike I'd look at the usual culprits like the Acerbis and UFO ranges.

I liked the one on the Nordie but it needed a better bulb.
