Hi Adventurers - I've been following this thread avidly since 'marks' kindly referred me to it in response to my post here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=1129215073#post1129215073).
Though I'm wary of scratching/dropping my 'new' Strom (and showing up my lack of skill...) I am keen to adventure more in my backyard. It would be great chance to learn from you guys. Can you give me any idea of times you may be departing Reefton on Sat for Big River and Waitahu, and on Sun when you'll be heading for New Creek? I could be tempted (and I'm allowed) to come for a quick blast up from Westport.
Cheers, Pete.

I can't remember the bad bit - was it where someones 1150 went over the side?
Nope
It's on the other side heading down around a right, straight and left and is about the first look you get at the lake.
The first time I went down it I was freaking.
But the whole Porkia was a lot steeper back then.
I blame Global Warming and subsidance.
Agree that it's not really an issue though.
The Maungatapu up to the first bridge is worse.

18th May 2009, 18:19
Ah yes, the Porika - Dusty Butt 2008 & my first ever steep descent on a very loose base. Completly cocked it up including dropping the bike on both sides (at least that evened up the garks!!). Of course I blamed the XF - 19" front, too high gearing & wrong tyres etc. My fear of heights didn't help either.
In hindsight I was too focused on trying to stop the bike, instead of looking ahead - silly really.
I'm not qualified to give any advice (I still ride like a nana) but based on your ride reports & combined with the excellent comments already given in this thread, I don't think any of you guys will have a problem.

I barely remember the "scary bits" of the porika from my DB1k trip (the only time I've done it). I recall it was c*nty getting up from the lake on the return leg. Musta been the MT21 factor me thinks... I'm sure big bertha will chew it up...

....Cooneyr - shame you can't join us but perhaps if us Northeners are well behaved we might be allowed back for the Dusty Butt?
I'll leave the likely lot from NN to veto the DB1k entry LOL. My wife and I have bigger plans afoot that mean we need to watch the pennies for the moment so no/minimal tripping at the moment.
....Does anyone have a GPS route set up of where we are going? if so can they send it to me. Otherwise I'll sit down with mapsource and see if I can work out how to plug it in.
I mainly use the GPS to tell me where I've been rather than where I'm going so it's not something I've really used yet.
Assuming I've not broken anything and you have a Garmin GPS with a USB connection to your PC you should be able to load route files from my website directly to you GPS without using Mapsource. If if doesn't work or you have any questions get in touch. All of the tracks you will be riding are on my site.
Cheers R

Welcome to the forum Pete, Meet up with the guys if you can they are a great bunch, and all look out for each other.
I lied.......
perhaps I should elaborate - we will hopefully doing the following in the following order:
Porika - moderate 4wd track with one nasty downhill bit which maybe those with roady tires or limited experience (or sore backs) should bypass
Breaburn - Matakitaki Rd - Maruia Saddle - West bank Rd - all a piece of piss
Big River - moderate 4wd - should be ok for everyone
Waitahu River - knarlier 4wd - which maybe those with roady tires or limited experience should bypass
The New Creek track - moderate 4wd - should be doable by all except maybe the last bit down to the river
I ripped my footpegs off last time on Big River and Waitahu River - they have a few bumpy bit that would reduce eddies old hard bags to dust
Hey mark you could always cross the mackley river as there is more parking space on the other side, as you mentioned there wasn't much space on the new creek side of it in Snodpete's thread.

We'll rendezvous at 'The Broadway Tearooms And Bakery' (opposite Wilsons Hotel at the east end of Broadway in Reefton) at 8am to leave by 8.30 on both Saturday and Sunday (sorry Balrog).

If I crossed to the other side the temptation to continue to Denniston would be overwhelming
Pity you aren't joining us
Went through the Porika last saturday, it's in reasonable condition at the moment. The st arnurd end has a nice clean line with few slippery areas (clay - can spot them a mile away through the rock). The lake end is quite loose but the hair-pin corners are clean giving good drive up each section.
You lads are gonna have a ball:2thumbsup

It's just more fun on the return leg.
Hard base + loose grit != fun on MT21 rear.

I don't know how you could possibly reach the conclusion anybody who was visiting this thread and reading your posts could possibly think you were having second thoughts about this trip Joe! Use your paddle anyway, you might save a couple of minutes on the crossing that you and Dave could make valuable use of on the other side!

Booked a room at Wilsons Hotel for Firday night. J decided it would be nice to get away so she is going to spend the day messing about Reefton while I get muddy, then we will probably head home Saturday evening.
Suppose it might be a nice idea to grab a tape and charge some batterys.

Might have to get the neddle-nose pliers on the little sucker when we get to the SI and try the right side bulb in it to check for loose wire vs bulb gone. By eye the bulb looks ok but damned if I can see a loose wire - maybe inside the indicator housing & out of view. Checked & rechecked the terminal connectors i put on, they all fine connecting onto wire & not plastic, fuses look fine. Didn't wanna get too gung ho tryin to wrench the darn bulb out with pliers in case I'm doin somethin stupid & there's an easier way to get it out on those Dinky indicators - may have to refer to someone a bit more savvy than me on it! ;)
Could someone please tell me where's the nearest bike shop gonna be when we arrive so I can get a fresh bulb or two?

determined to only use one small daypack strapped to the bike, I can't stand a loaded up bike and don't wanna use the topbox for fear of breaking it if gravity takes over somewhere.
May be easier said than done though.

I'm looking into some ingenious methods of carting tools and stuff. Might involve a lot of duct tape. :niceone:
Is it wise to put stuff in the air cleaner box. Seems like a big hole doing nothing. :msn-wink:

I got clutch and brake levers cabletied to me frame, tyre levers would be there too but need a better drill to put holes in them.

My son who lives in Wanaka was on the ferry (heading South in a 4x4) yesterday morning with his 9yr old son. :shifty:
They were talking to a group of "KiwiBiker's" crossing for a South Island adventure run. :ride:
Could this have been the group he was talking to?
He is a big guy (rides motoX) do any of you remember talking to him?
The crossing was a bit on the rough end of the scale! (lots of people sick)
Well, good luck, hope your ride goes well. Cheers, John.

I just rang the ferry co and listened to the schedule for the day. Ferries so far today have left pretty much on time, however the 2:25 isn't going to leave till about 3:40, and they made no mention of any later than that.

It was a truly magnificent weekend ride though - great company all round and a range of terrain to test us all on. None of the photos I have are worth posting (camera phone) but Eddie and Fran and a couple of others should have some good pics and Padmei should have some good video.

XF650 came from Reefton to the 'Port today and was keen for a ride so we went up Mt Rochfort (which looked better than my first trip up there (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/album.php?albumid=1994&pictureid=24540)), then towards the Denniston end of the Mackley/New Creek track. I managed to fall off twice, the last time in a lovely muddy puddle... The crash bars have proved invaluable, and I now know Trailwings don't do mud (or deepish graded gravel) well at all.
Any KB adventurers over this way sometime get in touch and we'll go play (to dry places)!

Bloody brilliant weekend, great to meet and ride with you guys, got home about 5 and am very tired now and bloody sore all over.
padmei you missed the turnoff up the breaburn, but good to see you made it back safe and sound.
heard a weird rattling noise riding over the braeburn, and upon investigation, noticed that the rear sprocket was floppin around way too much, so I slowly headed to the lake shore where Marks, Andy Mac Undeground and JMJ were patiently waiting. Anyway the cush drive bearing had collapsed and worn the hub against the swingarm and the sprocket bolts have started cutting the swingarm in half.
Eventually we decided that the guys would road home with me pillioning on Andymacs bike when a 4wd with a motorbike trailer on came into view with an old rugby mate of mine who was coming back from a trail ride when on a whim decided to go over the brauburn to have a look. Fortunately it was a 3 bike trailer and they only had 2 bikes on board so we loaded up the klr, said cya to the others and I got dropped off at my door. And they had beer.
What are the chances??
Hope you guys had a good trip up the Porika, and come on you DR guys I am waiting.:2guns:

woodman you're a tinny bastard ,what are the chances that a bike trailer turns up 20 mins after you break down ....and they had beer !
You missed a good ride over the porika ,I got home 7.30 and it is blowing a gale out here , I had to put both feet out and paddle along at one stage to stop being blown off the road , those poor buggers on the ferry will be chundering ,but I hear the remaining 3 northerners are tucked up in a cosy cabin over in Motueka (almost too cosy by the sound of it )

Ok am home safe & sound & wet LOL, unpacked, Black Beastie tucked up in bed! The crossing was howling a gale but the seas were less bumpy than the trip out with Joe on Wednesday, so all good!
I had an absolute blast and thoroughly enjoyed meeting all the SI adv riders: Matt, Kyle, Craig, Nigel, Fran, Geoff, James, Alison, Carl, Struan & Pete; you guys are top and helped make an awesome trip! Wicked fun to get down there with all the NI guys too, great fun riding with you as always!
Special thx to Nordie for the loan of the pressure suit, Matt for putting Joe & I up for the nite Wednesday and for letting me chill at his place on Thursday when recovering from one of the worst migraine attacks I have ever had, & to James for letting me have a go on the BIG (I want one!!!!!) which I immediately fell in love with! Pete, top marks to you for taking the V Strom up Big River too.
Final thx to Marks for putting the trip together with a stunning variety of tracks and roads, and Michael for organising a great price on the ferry for us.
You guys have awesome scenery and terrain down there and I will be chomping at the bit to head south again, but also hope you guys & gals come do a reciprocal Invasion ride up north!

some of those stream crossing look quite deep - i'm hoping to traverse the Maruia Saddle and the Braeburn on the way back from the Monkey - two up on the GSNo problemo. Maruia Saddle has fairly shallow water crossings and good approaches. The Braeburn Track ones are all nicely constructed concrete lined fords. Easily doable when well over axle/footpeg depth, the one closest to Murch is by far the deepest so don't be put off thinking it could get worse. I did have a real good look though, to check there weren't any logs/boulders rolled onto the ford by the swift current. Also use the normal stream crossing approach: start upstream, ease downstream with the current so you aren't fighting it so much. That was after a few weeks of good rain, and it had been raining much of that day/evening - yeah it was night the first time I did it  and never seen it that deep again.

Awsome day, one of the others will have to post pics, I didn't take a camera
Padmei, I saw your crock on the left hand side of the road about half way in to where the road forks, was gunna stop but the only good crock's a lost crock.

the ride up the coast from Anatori was an out an out drag race - woohoo - you would have loved the open windy clean swept dirt with stunning views everywhere you looked. The PD would have FLOWN over those roads

No problemo.
Or to put it another way...
All the crossings were shallower than on the Dusty.

Marks & I are now back on the NI. We had another beautiful day to explore Mt Arthur & any gravel heading towards Nelson.
At Wakefield we headed into Waione Gorge? & explored some fabulous tracks but on the gravel road out I ran wide on a corner & ended in a culvert. Then next minute there were 5 people helping to tow the bike out. It looked trashed & unrideable so it was loaded onto the back of a truck & taken to Wakefield. It was absolutely awesome how these strangers insisted on doing everything they could to help :2thumbsup
Where we decided it was cosmetic damage, so removed broken front fairing & headlight & aligned the forks. Rode straight thru to Picton, seeing Nordie Boy on his way back - sorry we missed you on the Maungatapu.

70........I think I've met his daughter... seriously, she used to work in the climbing gym in Nelson. Said he had nearly 100 bikes, set up kinda like a museum. Will have to track him down for a look-see one day.

It's been awesome reading all your reports, viewing pics and videos. Thanks again Marks and others for making this possible. Not sorry I dodged that Waitahu River trip..! Strom and I would be very bruised... as it is I'm still trying to get the sweaty smell out of my gloves (very tight grip ) after Big River.
Keep the tales coming - loving it all.

Sorry I never really got to have a chat to you Snod, or Pete, or whatever you call yourself. Anyway, I thought it was pretty cool that you got the little red beast in there without damaging it. :Punk:
I've been playing around with the photos and got a pretty cool one of you. Check this out. You may need broadband.

Bart is, I think, by far the most talented photographer out of us lower north island riders.
Thanks guys, but the odds are stacked in my favour. Chances are that with a good camera, and hundreds of photos taken, you're going to fluke a good picture eventually. I'm pretty rapt with that one though. I also like the red weestrom in the river.

I think the one you took of a black klr cresting a hill on the new creek track is pretty cool as well - its my new desktop
and that one of Kyle hooning across the stream is awesome too
put some in the nz picture thread on advrider and we'll nominate a couple for the front page image thingy
