Ferry to Nelson is only 75 mins. You could probably stay in Nelson on Friday night just as easily. Gives you more striking distance on Sat at the expense of doing Maungatapu etc in daylight on Sat am. Nelson fri night, Reefton area Sat night, ferry sun arvo? I will have to check with her indoors, but a couple of bods could stay at our place.

June could be icy and high water. Might be more pleasant to get up on to the ridges in the Moutere Depression: panic mac, spooners, old coach, those areas, ie the stuff closer to Nelson. With a caveat, that some winters some sections of Old Coach turn into a 20cm thick clay quagmire. Plenty of options to avoid it if necessary.

What.............join the Dog Rooter club. Only because, with a slightly uncertain future, I don't want to lay out too much coin.

After the other weekend, I don't think I could handle another 540km day on the DRZ. Just want something with a little bit more legs for the road, that doesn't vibrate like shit, without loosing the off road ability.

:whocares::Offtopic: What about this south island thing :scooter:

Good luck

EddieB has suggested we all go down south for a weekend. Maybe Friday night ferry - stay night in motor camp in Waikawa next to Picton then invade Nelson and listen to them play their banjo's or do some other localish rides then back on Sunday arvo?

If we could squeek an extra day we could do some of the awesome stuff around Reefton (my preferred option)

This would be May or June

anyone interested?

any of you South Islanders got any POLITE suggestions?

cheers

Plan B a good alternative
Plan C better save to plan A or B by implementing plan D or E
Plan D better save to plan A or B by implementing plan E
Plan E bottom line be happy u can still walk and enjoy some people cant

Another option from picton could be port underwood road (excellent) & maybe some forestry roads around port underwood or through to Rarangi then blenheim. From blen maybe out to French pass (there & back) with the slippery track done in between, over Maunga into Nelson. From Nelson can do some local tracks around Hira forest or some of the Dusty butt tracks.

If it was me catching the ferry over for just a weekend I'd prefer to spend time doing closer gravel to the top of the south rather than long miles to Reefton & back.

Thats what I'd like to do anyway when I finally drag some other sorry Sth Islanders to visit Weelywood.

Whatever happens if the weekend works I would loveto catch up with you wrongislanders.

Does the ferry have specials for bikes & riders thru the year & what would they be ballpark?

given the significant cost of the ferry it seems better value to do a 3 day ride if possible.

Personally I would prefer lateish May rather than June

Ideally something like
Thurs night 6.25 ferry to Picton - arrive Picton 9.25 stay at Picton or Waikawa
Fri morning leave 8-8.30 blast down hw 63 to St Arnaud for late morning tea.
Do Da Porika  and Braeburn with late lunch at Murchison (2 ish?).
Go down the New Creek to Denniston track and turn back at the river.
Get to Reefton about 6 or so and stay Fri and Sat nights
on Saturday do Big River :wari: and Waitahu River :Punk:
on Sunday head to Picton via interesting routes and Nelson/Mangatapu Track

Would some of you locals comment on timing etc please

If majority wanted either 2 days or Sat Sun Mon then that's cool too

I favour this suggestion of MarkS' - however, may have to decide between this and the Brass Monkey - terrible having to find rides that justify me keeping my bimmer as well as the DR which has become weapon of choice given my confidence level

Seems like a doable plan, but it would be a late arrival into Reefton, MMMMM the smell of coal fires, and beef burgers @ Wilsons.
How about chucking in a ride down to Kahurangi lighthouse, depending on tides of course, maybe into the Cobb

just booked crossings for a couple weeks away last night and bluebridge is $105 vs $122-$132 one way for bike and rider.

if you guys set a date and time a fair way in advance it would be great for us to organise time and to organise somewhere for you guys to stay. I am happy for a few to stay here too.

30th March 2009, 21:08
Mark - I too would be a starter, South Island is always my preferred destination for Adventure Rides and another expedition would not be unwelcome. Three days is probably a good idea - otherwise the ferry crossing ends up being too big a portion of the weekend. After work crossing (Thursday) and a night in Picton is probably the best option for ensuring Friday is used best. Avoiding the temptation of being too ambitious with the planned mileage is something to be careful about - leave time for admiring the view, supping coffee and socialising over a meal and a drink at the end of the day!

can you imagine getting to the bottom of that nasty clay hill only to discover that the rivers up and you are completely FOOKED

yup

the only slightly knarly bit would likely be the south end of the Porika and you could easily bypass the Porika if you wanted. Waitahu River gets a bit stony and bumpy but once again would be easy to skip.

at least bluebridge stay at the one price ($105 bike and body - 1 way) where as interislander ramp up prices as the boat fills up so lets go with the bluebridge 7pm sailing?

I think that forces us to stay in Picton/Waikawa on Thur night.

Shit. I'd already booked that week off work. Problem is.................I promised to take the missus on holiday. :(

Perhaps we could holiday in Nelson. We could go a few days early. She could fly and I'll ride.

Devious :2thumbsup:2thumbsup

Somehow, I don't think it will work. :weep:

you got to be able to fguire something out. get a cardboard cutout of you looking attentive - maybe she won't notice.

We are talking about a 1000k loop - the DRZ will give you one of these

if we are looking at a group booking best to get numbers, so we know if theres enough seats and space for everyone, bikes e.t.c.

im also looking in to acomadation prices, in picton.

Haha nice picture. Is that what you use to fool your wife while you're off on your bike.

My wife  just reminded me it's her birthday that week. We were originally going to Fiji for a holiday, but I've been doing some serious tightening of the purse strings lately.

given that the Brass is the following weekend and a few birthdays are around that time would it help to go on the Friday evening (22nd) and come back on the Monday (25th) - or have people already made plans?

No, Thursday would suit better for most by the sounds.

Just wondering (again) if the Tiger will cope, mainly on ground clearence issue as have shunted the headers a couple times already. Alright for you lot on lightweight DR's etc but the likes of the Tiger are borderline adv bikes and don't take the knocks so well. (I'm not sure i shoulda looked at your ride report Mark!!:shit:)

It is something to consider - the KLR is quite low slung and the bash plate got a real work out on some of those tracks - I am amazed at how strong a piece of plastic can be (although I did crack a corner of the bashplate on ol' greenie). Its the usual story where you'd be fine on 99% of the ride but the remaining 1% could be a ball breaker (or header breaker).

Buy a DR - everyone needs 3 bikes.

Definitely roads down there. Guys I ride with from Manawatu/Horowhenua took their adventure bikes down there a while ago, during a South Island Trek.

Why don't you 'Google' it this weekend Dave. You can have the tracks all prepared to discuss when we get back (wouldn't want you to get bored the w/e...).

Hi

Plan is as follows:
Thursday night 6.25 ferry to Picton - arrive Picton 9.25 stay at Picton or Waikawa

Fri morning leave at 8am and head down HW63 to St Arnaud for late morning tea.
Do Da Porika and Braeburn with late lunch at Murchison
Head to Reefton and sort out accommodation for Fri/Sat night in Reefton
If time left go up Waitahu River for a look.
Saturday head down to Waipuna Rd and go up Mosquito Creek to foot of Napoleon Hill and return.
If time Sat afternoon do Big River
on Sunday go to river on New Creek Denniston track and then head back to Picton to catch ferry (via Mangatapu Track if time)

Anyone from Nelson is welcome to join us - probably easiest to meet at St Arnaud where we would hopefully be sometime between 10-11 on Fri morning. If you got to work Friday you could cruise to Reefton Friday after work and stay Fri night and Sat night in Reefton. Haven't sorted accommodation in Reefton yet.

Do the second, no gravel the on the first route. Then again the Upper buller wiggles are pretty cool too. Actually definitely do the second (via springs on the way south as you will have to do the Upper Buller on the way north from the New Creek Denniston track looksee.

For those of you doing this ride that have a GPS and have never looked at my website (see signature) before most of the the tracks you will be doing are on my web site if you want them.

was actually thinking of the direct route to allow time to do Waitahu River but via the Maruia Saddle might be a better choice - we can argue the toss on the ferry or at Murchsion over a coffee - I'm happy to go with the flow as either option will be fun (Waitahu River is much knarlier than Muruia etc)

Team,

it is time to confirm the ferry bookings for the special fare I advised previously - $130 return for rider and motorcycle for the North Island Invasion ride.

Can each of you who wish to have a booking made at this rate please PM on the KiwiBiker system to confirm your booking. I believe base travel options are:

1825 crossing Wellington to Picton Thursday 21st
1805 crossing Picton - Wellington Sunday 24th.

There is scope for individuals to select more convenient crossings on these dates but the fare is only for those participating in this KB organised ride.

Once I have your confirmation I will have IIL make the bookings on your behalf and I will advise how you pay. Payment must be made (well) before sailing. Cut off to be Sunday 3rd May - I will have IIL confirm bookings on Monday 4th. After 3rd May you will need to make bookings in the normal way at standard fares.

Regards,

Michael

Have had a look at the Reefton website and the old nurses home does look promising, but it would be more fun if we all stayed at the same place etc.

Probly need a number to confirm booking wherever we may decide to stay. Hmm may need to buy a sleeping bag, don,t think my wee survival bag that is in me jacket will suffice.

Well it will be great to meet you, even if only for a one day ride! Am hoping on one day or another we get to meet alot of you guys; well those of us that haven't met you all yet! I'm certainly lookin forward to that aspect of the trip!

The major problem I foresee is that I won't want to leave! I totally fell in love with the SI when we came here on reccie before emigrating from UK - it was the now ex-Mrs Paladin who talked me into Welly, I wanted to live in the Nelson-Motueka area!

You didn't know?????? Hahaha!!!!

well if it helps, I whole heartedly renounce the whole damn country and the shite Prime Minister, hypocritical government, sponging monarchy, the nanny-state society and all the rest of the crap that goes on there, and will tell you that I will always be forever thankful to have had the opportunity to be able to come and live in Gods Own Country, and when they grow up, I'm sure my two daughters will feel the same! Thank god I got them outta the Uk before the borders closed keeping people IN! And NO, I'm not one of those poms who came here with gobs of money from the Uk real estate boom ramping up NZ house prices til Kiwis couldn't afford a new home! So, can i still come on the ride now or what?
;)

Add to that, I think Kiwis are great people and very welcoming and friendly - except the ones who hate poms! (well actually I also hate those poms who treat NZ like they are doing the country a favour by coming here!).

p.s. what's your address? when I relocate to the SI, I'll try hard to move next door to you! ROFL!

EddieB

Joe
Paladin

Everybody but Dave and Joe are requesting the Thursday 1825 sailing heading South. Joe and Dave wish to travel on the 0225 that morning. We will all be on the Sunday 1805 ex Picton home.

Including me that is 8 bikes and riders.

I am now waiting for Faye at IIL to confirm these bookings. Each individual will then get confirmation from me and special instructions (both by PM from me) on how to pay the IIL direct, by cheque and mail or phone and credit card. Note that the method of paying will be specific to our special deal - you have to follow my instructions to use this deal, you cannot just ring the 0800 number and talk to anybody.

Regards,
Michael
