I had the most amazing time trail riding in Waihi! Your guide, Stuart, is a great guy, a half or full days ride is very reasonable; you get to do at least two different trails and more and he pretty much has all the equipment one would need. Part 2 of 2 The finishing 180 grit grinding tool valves installed into the 'jig' head . Finished piston, ready for installation.
Part 1 of 2 Well back in the original update I alluded to the fact that there was quite a difference in weight between the old 44mm 125cc pistons and the new 47mm 142cc pistons. At the time I decided to try the lighter pistons without balancing the entire reciprocating assembly. The results were more than satisfactory with no appreciable difference in vibration. Now that I'm back in my trade I have access to very accurate electronic scales used for colour matching ...
Time for me to beg - I need a hand to make a primary locking tool, to lock the primary drive so I can undo the compensator sprocket and clutch basket. There's an official HD tool for doing this, and it's relatively cheap ($50ish), but there's a 5 week wait for delivery. Fortunately, as well as the official HD service manual, I've been using this step-by-step guide at harleyhog.co.uk and he's got a design for a simple metal bracket that will achieve the same purpose. So I need ...
Finished mounting the engine on Ikasu and she's a she's purring like a pussy. I ended up with the bike drained of her life's juices and upside down on a work bench since my last post. As I started welding mounts in place my mig tip decided to become part of the weld. I also managed to re-run the exhaust as so it now doesn't interfere with the rear break. I'm probably going to change the rear sprocket to much larger one given Kaitohe is apparently quite ...
I had grand plans to get lots done on the bike over the weekend, despite still waiting for the belt. And then work intervened. Managed to fit in a small twiddle tonight, which makes me feel vaguely accomplished. Had a go at fitting the new Jiffy Stand spring, but the new spring doesn't have much stretch, and it was starting to look actually tricky. I've got to take the left side floorboard off anyway when I pull the primary apart, so I'll leave it to then as at that point I should ...
I was filtering between two lanes of stationary traffic today, at a red light. There was a light truck in the right lane, positioned all the way to the left of his lane. As I got closer I realised there was no way I was going to be able to get my mirror past his mirror, so I was going to be stuck between lanes when the lights changed. But as I came up beside the truck, the driver saw the problem. Next thing I know his mirror was making a whirring sound and folding forward out ...
In my earlier blog entry about keeping a good supply of lube I showed what happens to the cam bushes when they don't get lubricated properly. At the time I had plenty of spares that were still well within service limits so I was not too concerned about the same problem arising. I did another set in running a cam that had slightly worn journals, I should've taken more time to measure them but as they say coulda, shoulda, woulda... So I took a visit to the local ...
