I think its the human preoccupation with speed...

I teach guitar for a living and all the kids wanna play fast fast fast.... I can play fast.... but its the gaps inbetween that make you good.... each to their own.... you wanna ride at 130 sweet.... but dont race past me at that speed, no indication, within 2 feet of my bike with an L plate on. If all riders were like that I would buy a Corolla. Thankfully most people seem pretty tolerant of learners (my few stalls at the lights and no beeping horns!)

I think the "within 2 feet of my bike" is the issue there. It's not your place to tell anyone else how fast they can go, aslong as they give you room and thier actions don't effect you. In this case, 2 feet, that's fucking insane. What if you'd swerved 2 feet to avoid a pot-hole... for that reason alone, those dudes need a bullet.

Why speed?...Hmmm. A lot of it has been said in "coz ya can". Another part of it is that "bikes can"...with bells on!
Some days I will sit right on 100k for hours, quite happily. Another day I might be out on a familiar piece of sweepie road, no traffic, wonderful conditions etc and next thing I know I am at 120...and find myself looking over my shoulder to check if there is any traffic round - 'specially if it might be law enforcement traffic...
I usually make a point of staying under 110...typically round 108. This usually matches the ambient traffic speed and keeps me in a safe space - I do work to find a space to ride in - I hate being tailgated or trapped in a wolf-pack. That's where the danger lies IMO. While you are in your own space, you are safer.
Anyone who has ridden with me might have noticed that I give myself a lot of room between my bike and the traffic in front. I want to have a buffer zone if I have to stop suddenly, especially if someone is right up close behind. In an extreme case, I have been known to slow right up, move left and wave the tailgater through. I would rather have them in front than sitting on my arse. Much safer gone.
So yes, I do drift over the limit at times, but try not to be a lunatic about it. I certainly don't overdo it if the conditions are not good. More to the point, I ride to the conditions on the day. So far, so good.

That is true...I guess being a learner, already 30km/hr over what I am meant to be doing kinda sucks that people fly past you like your holding up traffic...specially when if the gimp had off crashed Id be the one that would be first on the scene to deal with him... (I had this happen once in a car.... passed doing 150.... and about 2km down the road found the car upside down...scared the shit out of me)

I usually travel a bit above 100 kmh. Mainly its because I like to use the better fuel economy available when I'm in top gear and at 100 kmh my bike is most comfortable in 4th or 5th gear. 6th only starts to become usable at 100 kmh and is happiest at around 110 - 115 kmh.

Yeah it was more the 2 feet thing that got me and like I said the fact is if he did indeed crash I would be the first one there having to deal with it.
I understand alot of guys can handle speed etc...I guess I am just happy at 100 and if ya need to pass me, indicate and give me a bit of room, cause I have had to swerve before and I dont wanna collide with someone doing 130!

I can remember in my younger days regularly doing 180 on the himatangis, and there were a lot of others doing those speeds then, seems to me that people have slowed down a lot since then not the other way round

I know thinking for yourself can be a bit hard at times, but you should be able to work out that if they don't want you going over 70, then that's because they don't want you riding on roads with a limit higher than 70.

Currently you're not qualified or legally allowed to ride on the open road, although they've stopped short at making it an actual offence. Perhaps they should, it would solve any questions on the matter.

hmmmph, nice to see that you only tend to speed where pedestrians /kids and built up traffic is........imo the worst place to do it..........then bleat on wondering why people ride at over 100.....where imo I beleive there are far less hazards......hypocritical much ?!

If you did'nt move left to let me past i'd pass you like that too! I hardly use my indicators for passing either.....never for a bike, I expect other bikers to give me room as cars and trucks seem to manage to do......if a bikes coming up from behind, give up some of your massive lane and let him pass.....

I'm sure the intention of the law was to require newbies to stick to 70kph zones or less to build up their confidence, before braving it on the big bad open road.

Is the entire right-hand lane enough room for ya?
