BucKBuckNo1 - May Have To Stop Riding

I am totally gutted. Victor Lima Xray and I may have to part company permanently.

As some of you are aware I have a disability - 10 years ago I had bone removed from several vertabrae in my neck, this was done to decompress pressure that was crushing some of my main root nerves. For those medically inclined the procedure is known as a 'microforamenotomy'. I have osteoarthritis in the spine with cervical spondylosis. The osteoarthritis is a degenerative bone disease and the cervical spondylosis is the constant nerve entrapment 'nipping of the nerve/s'.

This past week I have been to the doctor, physiotherapist, and the swimming centre, as well as taking pain relief medication.

The bottom line is that the cruiser style is definitely a not for me because my feet are to far foreward and I can not take any pressure off my spine.

The Honda Shadow VLX600 will be posted for sale with pictures shortly.

Meanwhile my thoughts are towards bikes with the pegs immediately below the hip, not dissimilar to GN250 eg SV650, ER-N and Z750. [10 months on the GN250 and while there may have been a few niggles the riding ergonomic was just right for my condition.]

I think I may have to bide my time and think about a V-Strom or Versys, they provide higher handle bar configuration and good peg position. Down the track my third bike was in that category that is after the VLX. I didn't think it would come to this so soon. I may jump to the SV650 or Z750, but at this stage I will give it a few weeks to sell the VLX and still go for some wee short rides. I am gutted the shoulder and neck, both are not comfortable to say the least.

I have spent over 20hours cutting back the alloy and polishing the forks and crankcase etc. As well I looked at the bike manual and purchased new front and rear sprockets, chain and new brake pads, all to be fitted at the next service.

I bought the bike from nzcruzer and today we went and took some pictures of the VLX600 and his 750. I am going to miss this bike for sure.

    Unhappy Oh dear

I have cyatica nerve problem and ride a bandit - it's real comfortable with no weight on my back, and my feet arn't forward or anything, I can recomend it for comfort.
    Hornets are good too.
But you might want to look at a VX800 (they're old though) - mine is the most comfortable bike to ride, it handles and cruises like a cruiser - the front castor is like a cruiser so you get that same feeling, but better posture for your condition. They have the V twin out of the intruder.
If your up this end of the island (Hamilton way) your more than welcome to take them both for blast and see how ya get on.

    Good luck

Sorry to hear that. Just a thought, I've seen both Suzuki and HD cruiser type bikes with pegs in the "normal" position.

If you have back problems, BMW are worth looking at, they have an extremely comfortable riding position.

Would a sprotsbike work, with the forward lean ? Downside is that there is constant pressure on neck and back to hold the torso up. I would have thought that the SV650 was fairly sprots in riding position.

Hopefully, the thread title is misleading and should read "May have to switch bikes".

Damn, thats unfortunate, both in its bad luck that your condition clashed with the style of bike that you like and that you'll have to sell what looks like a very nice bike. At least you've found out now and not after you bought a brand new Harley! Had a bit of a shock when I saw the thread title, was worried you'd had an accident! Might pay to see if you can have a long test ride of potential bikes to see how the pain is on them.

So, whens the 'looking to change to an upright bike' and the half year long research process starting?

Its just going to be a case of suck it and see.

some suggestions: HD Sportster with "normal" footpeg location and low bars.

Honda Hornet 900, maybe swap out the bars. I sold an SV650 to buy one, look at the SV also. would another option be a touring oriented bike? something that still handles, say a Triumph or Ducati?

    good luck with it...

Ouchy! Oh well, at least you can sell it for what you bought it for or maybe more, that was a really good price you got it for.
How about an old BMW tourer, a boxer/flat twin?
Very upright seating, classic, reliable, and quite cheap. Very often seen at good prices on Trademe.

I'd suggest sitting on some street style bikes - SV650 (as opposed to SV650S - there's quite a difference between a single handlebar and clip ons on the S)
    GSR600 - proper sexy bike.
I think you would probably be best off with one of those Kwak Retro 650 bikes....W something...will look it up and edit this post....

No wonder I couldn't remember the rest - it IS a W650 - go sit on one and see what you think. Just an idea. Would hate to hear you'd given up bikes altogether bud - you seem to enjoy it too much!

Head DOWN and enjoy bro, keeping your head up too high seems no good for yer back!

In every community there are a few that stand out with a level of enthusiasm second to none, and you are one of those! It would be sad to see you leave us so soon.

But there may well be posibilities for you. Steam's suggestion of an older beemer is cool, I think you could really get on well with one. They are great bikes and have heaps of character.

If you are buying an older bike then you will benefit from looking at the seat and suspention. Both may have an effect on your back. After a while the foam in a bikes seat degrades, this is not a problem because it can be replaced and improved on (insert url to the seat builders). Same deal with the suspention, a poorly set up, or just tired shock will hammer even the fittest of riders, new, good quality shocks which are set up for you should make a big difference.

Newer bikes, you could look at the Honda CB family, for some strange reason I could almost see you on a BMW F650CS (or gs), there are lots of road or "sit up and beg" bikes, including the DL650 (and hmmm Transalp). If you did go for the Adventure style bike then the suspention is designed to soak up the bumps better than a road bike.

So, get your self better again and use it as a darn fine excuse to go for a few test rides ;-)

Glad you're OK - as in 'didn't bin the bike'! That's what my first thought was when I read the title of the thread.

Sorry to hear about the back pain tho - got back probs myself and even riding the ginny for long periods would result in enormous lower back pain due to the sitting on the base of the spine. Totally understand.

Take care and do what you need to do to make sure you can keep riding
