YB 125 resto

Hey boys and girls!

Fairly new to the land of motorbikes. Had a scooter for about 5months and decided to make the step up! So got myself a couple of '87 YB125's for $800. One is to warrent standard and the other for spares (maybe a future bucket!).

What better way to get to know your bike than to rebuild it! Strip the bike down under the watchfull eye of someone who actually knows something about bikes. So here's what we managed to get through in the last couple of nights. All going well should get onto colouring-in in the weekend.

First 2 pics are from strip down, the rest are after sanding.

What an interesting bike. Strange frame design, would you call that a monocoque? 1987 you say? There seems to have been a retro period in motorcycles during the late 80s... GB series etc.

Wicked. Will be a handsome little beast I should expect!

Hey all,

It is a bit of a funny design, but that's cool I suppose. I reckon' you would call it a monocoque.

All pumped up for the big assult on the paint work tomorrow. Will get onto it as soon as I have scratched a few panels for the all important legal documentation. I'll let you know how I'm getting on with the old girl later.

So,

Had a good day, got the paint and hooked in. Undercoated and a light first coat on all parts. looking pretty good. Not an original yamaha colour but a BMW car paint! Not a bad match really.

A little light headed now though!! Hehe

Here are some pics of parts with the paintwork all finished. The colour came up pretty good really. Just have to get it reassembled without scratching it all off again now!!

Nice one bro! I agree that tank looks awesome - just get some new screws for the yamaha logo rather than the rusty old ones. Guessing there will be a mission to put it all back together next week aye?

Talk about monster garage. El and I had a flat out mission yesterday and managed to get the beasty back together and running. Started around 10.30 and had it together and running just before 5. Included repainting the front guard cause I scratched shit out of it (doh). Anyways, quickly made up and L plate and El was off on his first ride to a mates to watch the rugby.

We ended up bolting the front guard and forks together then installing the forks on the bike. Didnt scratch the forks that way We are having issues with the paint though - petrol and week old paint on the tank didnt react very well. It has discoloured. The whole bike has been clear coated but obviously didnt help with the petrol. Anybody got any suggestions as to how to stop the paint discolouring or will time be enough i.e. leave the paint for longer?

The grin in the second to last pic says enough.

We had a good go of getting it back together and it all went relatively smoothly apart from a bit of clumsy handwork form a particular older sibling! (not naming anyone!) Wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be but helps when you have an extra couple of hands. Thanks for that.

End result looks pretty good all things considered. Goes pretty well to. Nice to be able to keep up with traffic, and occasionally beat it!! Only let down so for is from a bit of paint on the tank that didn't like a wee bit of petrol. (again not naming/blaming anyone in particular!!) You can see it in one of the photo's. I'll live with it though as the bike doesn't exactly owe me much.

Good to be on the road and crusin'

Sadly - the ole spray can paint is often not good with spilt fuel but what the heck - looks like you had fun with it - Nice bike!
