Looking at doing a Karapoti run.
Start at around 10:30am (ish) at the Rimutaka Caltex service station.
Head pretty much in from the Akatarawa side and exit at the other end.

Expecting it to be wet, slippery and scary.
So I thought I'd take the GS

If you fancy coming along, see you on Sunday
We have two riders confirmed so far. If the weather is really bad we may postpone.

    Cheers Jim
Ok, I've been up for a few hours (running on Northern Hemisphere time) and the tintops are all frosted over. Looks like we won't be able to cry-off for weather or bad light. Can I do this 2up on the eggbeater or are we talking major rutting and shitholes (over the motor) ?

I am replying on behalf of BusaJim (he's putting on lots of clothing right now)
If you haven't done this route before, then he says best not to do it 2 up the first time, unless you are a really really confident rider. Is going to get to be pretty tough going in places probably. And it will be quite slippery from all the rain we have had recently.

He'll see you all there soon.

Thumbs up great respect for busa jim, gunna and pablo

humbling experience today - set off feeling concerned for those riding bigger machines across the very slipprery Pram Track - even offered to ride as tail end charlie. It turned out I struggled on my little DR - albeit on dual sport tyres which filled up and became useless quickly in the clay.

Big ups - I salute you Jim (1150GS ADV), Pampa(F650Dakar) and Tim with his daughter riding pillion (Triumph Scrambler) on those big machines.

Thanks to all for your company and special thanks to MarkS who kept an eye out for me after I had the front wash out on a down hill section ahead of the steepest part of the Pram Track

A great ride - magic country today in the sunshine - thanks to all for your company - see you out there - Aslan

Aye all! it was a very nice ride today guys including the tracks and the awoseme wheather, by the way thanks for waiting for me the few times I was going slow to scared to go faster .

First rest after the slippery pram track and nice river crossing

Quick question to MarkS if I may, what is the brand of your trail bike and how much does it cost? I'm trying to convince a friend to buy a bike and geetting a cheap one may help

Great photos guys, wish i could have been there on my DR, it must be 4 1/2 years now since I have ridden in there.

When you went in from the Upper Hutt, you went through the gorge, onto the gravel road to the clearing, did you cross the river there?

How did the GS go BusaJim? tTat would have looked impressive going up the hill after the river crossing.

I decided to start my DR up to burn the spiders off(!) and found that it had a flat battery! Then I moved to my boys KDX and found that I had to drain the carb as the fuel was off, but got it going in the end.

Steve are you thinking of doing the MMMMM ride next month?

    Looks like fun!!

Didn't look that muddy in the photos.

Do you think in summer it would be possible on my street tyre shod DR-Z?

I have been through there with a guy with balding trials tires on, he got through but it would have to be very dry as there are patches of clay / mud which could catch you out. Give it a go though!

Up to the clearing/river & you'll be fine, even in winter. It's the pram Track, past the river crossing that's the issue. Polished, rutted clay that really requires dual-purpose tyres at the least.

Get a permit from GWRC & you can take a detour from the Taka's whenever the desire takes you...
