Net result the ship now carries LESS freight than before becuase of the 'ride quality". (that was a few months ago - they may have fixed it since then)

As to how this would affect the ROLL quality of the ship, I am at a loss to explain. There is more to why the Arahura was modified than your source has stated, starting with the fact that the ship was no longer going to be allowed to carry more than 400 passengers, half its original rating, due to the steady tightening of the SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) rules, which a ship that entered service in 1984 was eventually going to struggle to meet. It was not able to remain usefully in service in its 1984 configuration.

Roll quality of boats is influenced by both hull shape & the vertical centre of gravity etc.

Commercial ships have a flattish bottom & slab sides making them stable load carriers but not fast (high drag). Car carriers are the extreme box shape for maximum size for a light weight cargo.
Canoes with a round bottom are unstable because there is no resistance to rolling but low drag=easy speed.
Yachts use canoe hulls with keels (weight slung underneath) to keep them upright.

A good roll quality is when it gradually reduces from side to side - a boat is rolled by a wave to 2 oclock, it recovers to 10.30, to 1.00, to 11.30, to 12.
But if the centre of gravity is to low the boat recovers too quickly & is unpleasant to be on.

Commercial fishing boats are often converted into pleasure boats but because they are no longer carrying tons of fish near deck level they recover too quickly - a simple fix is too put a telephone mast (raises centre of gravity) and slows the roll.

When a yacht loses it's mast it is unbearble. Tons of lead suspended metres below the hull whiplash the boat upright. Crews are always seasick in dismasts.

I saw a ship capsize in Tonga harbour while unloading containers with its own cranes. Obviously they got their loading schedules wrong

I promise to leave the chaps at home as long as I can still bring the cap to wear to the pub for evening meals!

And you can save me a seat next to you mate!

    Pooey heading sth.

    Hi guys,
Obviously I'm not on this ride, but I have a big favour to ask........
Could one of you motley buggars carry Pooey the Adv bird on the ferry, to the mainland?
I'm picking him up off Anthrax today, and hopefully passing onto Phreaky Phil this weekend when he is in Raglan.
If someone could liase with Phil after this Sunday, it would be cool. Might pay to mention your intention on Pooey's thread on Adv rider.
    Cheers.

Any one of us could take him on the boat and had him over in Reefton. I'd be happy to. How do we get him here from you to us?

Sorry to high jack this thread guys.
I think the Invasion boys are shipping out on the evening of Thurs 21st, is that right?
Therefore someone needs to get Pooey to welly by Thurs morning, or he misses the boat
I'm doing some casual work next week, so I'm out, but some fine adventure type will step up and make us proud surely.
i'll leave it in Phils hands. Carry on, as you were.
