    A short story: -
Invercargill is my home town and I inherited my interest in things rapid and mechanical from my father, who (among other events) used to regularly attend the beach races at Oreti Beach.
The road between Invercargill and the beach crosses the Oreti river and until relatively recently, had a short steep hill down on to the bridge. From there, the road carries on straight for about 1km, passes through a long sweeping "S" bend and then is straight again for about 2 km out to the beach.
On the occasion of interest, my father, heading for the races, was about half way down the second straight in his Austin 7 and so doing about 45 miles per hour when he was overtaken by a gentleman on a motorcycle. The bike was travelling quite quickly - Dad estimated its speed at about twice his own - let's be a bit conservative and say 80 miles per hour.
The thing is, the bike was silent. The engine wasn't running.
On reaching the beach, Dad found Burt with his Velo leaning against a sand dune where the road enters the beach. The bike was a non runner and Burt hitched a ride to the races with Dad. When asked what was wrong with the bike, his response was " I don't know. I think I bent a push-rod dragging her into top coming down the hill onto the bridge".
That was about 2km back down the road from where he overtook Dad.
We often wondered how fast he was going at the time.

Its so good that these Burts Munro stories are surfacing- everybody is just focussing on the Indian prt of his story. I would love to get down South and research the people and the places sometime.
That photo on their website of Munro with the Vellocette looks just like the way they depicted his property in the movie!

I agree. However, we tend to forget that the movie was purely entertainment and only slightly educational - it took quite a few liberties with the facts.
It also did not reveal quite how eccentric Burt was.

where opinion holds more weight than fact.

It's better to not pass and know that you could have than to pass and find out that you can't. Wait for the straight.
