Yep, and its probably trashed the body internally. Its just as important as changing the engine oil and the penalties are similiar if you let it slide.

If it ain't broke don't fix it. You'll probably get years of life out of it. It's not like we're formula one racers just weekend (yuppy) warriors with too much money to spend. Spend it on your missus instead!

And you just might shock yourself ( excuse the pun! ) how better it will work after a thorough service / recon. I make no excuse for aspiring to high standards.

Have been doing exactly that today on a Husky 450 Motard with the latest Marzocchi Shiver 50mm forks, a really nicely engineered piece of kit.
We also serviced / upspec'd a Sachs shock out of an 07 Aprilia RSV1000 yesterday. It had never been apart before and we found that the main piston had been installed upside down.

glad someone will work on them
i have the 07 45mm shivers, can you get the seals and parts for them easily? or would they be more expensive than say ohlins' to service because you had to source the parts from overseas?

Seals may be a problem and I guess we need to check the dimensions. We revalved the 50mm ones as rebound was way too agressive and we were able to use Ohlins shims and clamp washers.

Amazing, I think that there is a fair amount of scaremongering from bike shops in regards to bike maintenance in regards to valves and tolerances etc. Or maybe its just a paranoid knee jerk reaction cause the first lot of new generation 4 strokes ate valves. I guess alot of it is how you ride your bike and how much time you spend revving the shit out of it....

If we followed to the letter manufacturers specs we would be changing Pistons every 10-20 hours and nearly every other moving part in the same time frame. I guess the rate it all in that time frame because they have to assume that the bikes are being used in the harshest environment possible under race conditions....

Not only the first ones, they are all highly stressed. It also always amazes me how many people skimp on maintenance but still expect very top dollar at trade in time and a discount on the new bike. Many a bike shop has traded bikes in such a way only for the things to hand grenade in short order due to previous negligence. Left holding the baby. Everyone wants to have their cake and eat it too.
