Heres a thought though. Imagine 400 riders down there every weekend. Whooped out just like the old place. Gotta pay the dues for a good ride.

Mind you somebody could maybe do the same and run it commercially for the masses...now theres a thought, Kawasaki Sandpit Tangimoana.
piss off buddy! You clowns can have your 400 a week. I like tangi with 40 a week. Whoop sections are great stamina training. Mind you the whoops have got a lot more rugged since i first rode there a few years back. Can we borrow your bobcat?

Anyway... Kawasaki would have to pay me for the rights... MY LAND

Aw man guttered to hear bout the crash up karapoti. How bad are the injury's and is the bike ok? That's happened to 3 of my mates in the last month it bloody dangerous in there.

I am injured myself at the moment so will probably give it a miss to. I got a fucked ankle it's coming right should be sweet for next weekend. Gives me some time to finish my rebuild I've been a bit slack.

torn ligaments in shoulder and a sus rib... Dunno, didn't have the chest x rayed. Not too bad considering... bike rode out ok but i'm yet to have a good look at it (it stays at a mates). The quad that i hit broke a steering arm and folded up one of the rims onto the caliper so that it wouldn't turn, smashed up plastics/headlights... so i got off pretty good lol. The other rider was KO'd on the ground face down wheezing his ass off but i couldn't move/breathe so i just lay there till my mates arrived.

Was pretty full on. I was top gear hoonin it. wasn't a sharp corner but it's amazing how fast he appeared (he was pinned too) i don't think i even touched the brake just saw blue plastic as i flew into and bounced off him in the air lol. We were only in the gorge a few mins from the carpark on our way out. Quad guy was on his way in. We have always said it'll happen there 'cos we tend to go hard as it's the last blast before the days over... no more racing through the gorge for me... I have a mate who fell into the river going through there too. choppered out etc.

Sounds like your very lucky, could of been way worse.

One thing that really fu*ks me of with the council is that Karapoti is basically the only place you can legally trail ride in the Hutt Valley. They know about all the accidents and how common they are in karapoti yet they are doing nothing to help

Maybe making it a one way loop track would be better, it actually wouldn't be that hard to do. But as if that's ever going to happen.

I wish you best of luck and a speedy recovery

My thoughts are, you need to self regulate! If you get the council involved that'll be when the shit all starts, an sooner rather than later, it will get to hard for them ( osh and Health and safety issues) and you will be banned from there. Even this one accident could make them close it down to MX.
Unwritten law here, keep to the left, all go the same way etc. Not that it always works LOL!!
Maybe you guys need to stay flying under the radar, don't ask the council and get hold of some old real estate agents signs and use the back of them to make some Two way slow down signs etc. And some of those red arrows to make the fast tracks one way??
Just a few ideas, no big deal?

problem with a loop track is i guess you would have to include the staircase and rock garden, bit tricky for novices like myself.....or maybe I just learn to ride better.
And I agree, leave the council out of it, first thing they will try and do is shut it down cos its a safety issue.

Dead right there Reckless, Ever ridden Foxton Beach Hazza? Ya won't now coz it's policed and you must be adhering to road rules to be there.... Wasn't that way 5 years ago but stupidity, crashes and complaints made the council get involved and it's all over....

As for Karapoti it's always gonna be a case of do what ya can to prevent crashing.... But it's largely a risk you take when going in there. The permit's (which most won't have) say something about two way tracks and being sensible from memory but once your in there it's up to you. I was riding with Kez that day (although not at the time of the accident) and yeah there were some places that we were really F'n hooning and I guess it's a choice we make..... I've had some very close calls (skinned knuckles from another riders bark busters scraping my hand as I pushed my bar under his to avoid colliding) and been on a 4wd trip where we carted out a rider who plowed into the front of one of our stationary vehicles (in a place the biker wasn't allowed to be) but how much fun would it be if we all slowed down everywhere? Kez has said he'll be slower down the gorge but I bet he'll still be racing the rest of us up Rimu Road.....

And as for a loop track? There's no other legal way to get out at the Hutt side (it's possible but we won't get into that) so how could it be done? The gorge will always be two way access. Tracks cannot just be created or the Ranger, Doc etc go crazy and boot everyone out... And the complexities of making every other track in the forest one way would be huge, impossible to police and frankly irritating as you lose half the riding....

yeah flag the council. I didn't tell the hospital where it happened for my ACC report 'cos i don't want policing up there. Twas me and Glen (quad rider) to blame and we fully accept that. I was pretty hard left but it's a pretty narrow track and the quad was using all of it... I would have hit the bank to get around him (not that i had time) and he would have plunged 6 meters onto the rocks of the river below if he'd turned left. I would say that quads could be a bit more careful up there as they can't keep left like we can in most places but then maybe i'm biased.

I love getting on to the cool knarly tracks in there that ya get stuck in and what not but the by product of that is... you get onto the roads and ya just wanna race.

You go there at your own risk i say... obviousely common sense has to play a part and me and glen chose to ignore the sensible part of our brain and paid a consequence

One thing i would ask is why walkers, mountain bikers, hunters, people with little kids on pushbikes go up there... It is basically the only place dirtbikes can go and these other land users are spoiled for choice. I guess they can hear us coming but still i wouldn't go up there if not on a dirtbike and prepared for the risk of injury. the amount of people i've come around a corner and seen quivering in a bush looking like they've just seen Satan... quite funny actually.. there should be a warning at the carpark explaining that us "spawn of Satan" are in there worshiping

Yeah I can see how a ginga on a dirtbike could be mistaken for Satan...

Yea i used to ride up foxton beach all the time when i was gowning up learnt how to do donuts up there ahaha.

I agree that the council shouldn't be involved i wasn't suggesting the we should get them involved. I just thought they would of done something to make it safe i don't want to see another fellow rider die in there. The last thing id like to see is them take karapoti away from us like the the fire breaks.

Well i went against all that i said about walkers in Karapoti! went for a hike up there on Sunday cos i can't ride. Took the dog and the camera. I can't believe how fucken far it is when ya don't have motorised transport!

I headed in there 1.5 hours before the boys were due to get to the carpark and still didn't get to the little hillclimb that i wanted to photoshoot before them. To make it a bit more fun it was hailing and raining as i walked the gorge and when i got up the hill it was fucking snowing! Got some ripper pics of the boys tho so here yaa
