    Two-stroke quad or trike wanted

Well, sold one of my crfs, and after a project - looking at a old 2 stroke motocross quad or trike... TRX250r, Tecate 4, LT250r, LT500r Quadzilla, ATC250r, Tri-Z 250 or Tecate 3.

Pref. something rough, I want to restore.

They are pretty hard to get, but worth a try, one of you guys might know someone... etc etc.

    Cheers

Here's one LT250 you may have seen...

    http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Mo...-224968487.htm

Are you planning on keeping the bike all original in restoration or giving it a few aftermarket MX goodies like a wider axle , a-arms etc?

There was a shabby looking TRX250R on TM a couple of weeks ago , had PEPS shocks and Paul Turner Racing motor plus the other usual MX bits, would of made the ideal 250R ground up rebuild!

i saw that LT... looks allright... but theres not to much to do on it lol... after a project... might see how much he wants for it. LT would be last on my wanted list though.

I saw that trx as well... 4500 was too steep I felt.

I have no idea... not that "down" on quads. I do know that I will be taking it to the occasional mx track. And jumping it.

nah, aparantly the handling and suspension sucks without heavy modification... they are also way heavier than the others, and a piped trx or tecate-4 will run with a banshee anywhere but dunes. Been looking on the net, the amount people have spent hopping up their banshee's is stupid

The ultimate would be a LT500r Quadzilla... That would haul ass. Problem is there are very few in the world, let alone NZ

Well if you are planning on taking it to a mx track and jumping I would definitely recommend the usuals of good aftermarket suspension e.g elka , fox , PEP and the standard MX 50" wide front and rear. Before commiting youself I would have a look around at the prices for these bits for the bike(s) you are after as most of these parts don't come cheap.

Here is a example of what lengths people go to in rebuilds of the old 250 2T's

    http://www.atvriders.com/qotm/quad-o...-qotm-atv.html

The Banshee would be the obvious next choice if you can't get hold of the other smaller 2T's you are after.I've been riding a 4T for a good 3-4 years now and still hands down would rather have a old MX 250R.Despite the technology being old , something about those high revving 250R's and their nimbleness really appeals to me compared to the new yfz's , trx's etc.

So that LT would be no good on a motocross track? I wouldnt be racing. Just playing around. Prob wouldnt be ridden hard on a regular basis.

Im not gonna fork out shitloads. All in all the most common use would be doing donuts on the front lawn lol. Other than that i guess itd just be cool to have one.

Did you do the last MR Motorcycles Maize paddock series, there was a guy who had a CR500 trike, awesome don't know how it went, but sounded nice
Why would you ride that long and that gnarly stuff if you don't have to, Its what we do, we love it.

It really depends on how hard you want to ride it when you do take it to the track. If you were just to trail ride it , that would be fine , but once you start jumping them with stock parts , you are putting some pretty serious stress on the frame (hence why there is gusset kits for most ATV's) , and depending on your weight I would say that the old suspension wouldn't be up to the task and more probably then not bottom out when you take the bike over a jump of real significance.

Plus the width is key when on a motocross track , as if you are running stock a-arms and axle you will find yourself fighting to keep all 4 wheels on the dirt in most instances, as the extra width helps you to slide the bike at faster speeds, without the feeling of the bike wanting to buck you off.Plus the width is a bit of a safety thing so you don't flip them as easy under hard cornering or if you get a bit out of shape.

Yea I did , I was parked near him , I think he was towards the back of the pack but still mixing it up with a few of them, which is a credit to him as I imagine they are a pig to handle.Sure sounded sweet though!

ahh.. screw it... iv got a yz to jump. In that case id prob just be looking to restore to stock.

You ever ridden a LT? What do you think that one on trademe would be worth? I know the trx has the best handling and the tecate has the best motor... so where does that leave the suzi?

No I haven't ridden a LT but with some of those older ATV's , they are quite small and can feel cramped if you are around the 6"0 mark like myself.Just a ballpark figure as these are pretty rare , I would say they reserve might be around the $1500 mark and would be surprised if it was anything about the $1700-1800 mark , as these are now very old bikes and only would really appeal to the niche market like yourself where someone is after a bike to have a bit of fun with and spend a bit of money getting it looking sharp again.

Since the plastics are actually quite tidy , a new set of ITP T9 Rims (around $120-$140 each) and new rubber would sharpen the bike right up.Also a bit of a bonus is the Nerf bars as they would be hard to find for that bike and are seriously beneficial as they save your foot/ankle from getting caught under the rear wheels if it goes wrong on the landing of a jump is .I wouldn't ride a ATV without them after hearing the injuries that people have had from this happening to them.

Whats wrong with the rims on it? If i did go for it id be stripping it right down and re-painting everything, most prob replacing bushings as they would prob be shot. Either re-painting or prob stripping the paint off the motor [i think its ugly blue]. Front shocks dont look too fancy.

Its pretty cheap... But its not exacly a looker in yellow and blue is it?

Certainly beats a trx for 4500 though

I have a friend with TRX250r that he might be wanting to sell. Just texted him after reading this thread.

Has made up gussets and other bits and bobs to make it stronger
(just text me back he wants 3500 for it but i think he's dreaming)
