If you strike out looking for floor space / couch to camp on in Wellinton try http://huttpark.co.nz/ have rolled off the ferry in the early hours myself and had them leave me a key at reception.

bed and booz here in the rapa masterton workshop, cold swimming pool for a wash, might give you some soap, food, beds and even a dunny if ya need it.
10mins away from hwy 52
ill even come down to the ferry and give a suzuki escort to the rapa... i dont have a siren or sexy red and blue lights.
