Also look at what maintenance has been done on them. How many hours since top end? Who done the top end? Condition of bike overall? Any known problems?

i would go the KX, but i could be bias,

but seriously, the KX85 has the easy powerband to trail ride with, (along with teh Rm and KTM 85) CR and YZ85 have a harder hitting more top end powerband due to being non power valve motors,

How much harder are we talking? Cos my previous ride was a drz125... not exactly quick.

not that much [i have ridden a yz and a rm 85]

saw that cr... looks like a decent deal for the amount of hours and the condition of it... especially when theres 03's on there for more

I'd be more interested in how much bottom end it has, especially for riding trails. From what I've read the KX85 has it over the other mx bikes in this regard.

Can't you just change the gearing to suit? Or is that a dumb statement lol

lol - i gather all this talk aint helped at all.

Reason i say about gearing is because my bike we had thawt just had standard gearing (never actually checked). Rachel brought a CR80 a year newer than mine. Who gearing seemed really low when i test rode it before she brought it. When we looked it up hers is in fact standard.
I've ridden hers around the learners at Sandpit & i don't feel like the front end is gonna lift whereas mine i can feel it wanting to come up quite easily.

i prefer mine, but she prefers hers so each to their own.

Her gearing is much better in tighter stuff as you don't hafta keep it in the revs as much but mine is better in the open.

hope i have confuzzled you more.

No that does kinda help, I can see myself stalling a whole lot since I used to nurse the DRZ round the convict track in mega low revs (??! funky riding style i guess) but it would be nice to be able to keep the front nice and light over all those whoops... i guess if I dont like the standard gearing it can always be changed later...

i got a CR for my mrs, she lovs it. then she got pregnant and stopped riding, but for the breif time she rode it she thought it was awesome. they need to be revved if your'e trying to go up steep hills, but for the likes of woodhill they'd be pretty easy to ride.

as for the kx, ive never owned one myself. and hondas are just better

Standard gearing you'd be able to do that alot easier than the likes of mine. if you can be bothered doing it you can change the gearing depending on where you're riding.
the 2t's don't like putting around - end up fouling plugs alot. I use to go through heaps of them when learning. Can adjust jetting to help with this though.

So rather than confusing ya, personally i would go test ride a kx & a cr & see which you like. Then you can decide what things you will change on it etc - probably wanna ride it a few times before you do this as its gonna be a change with the new bike anyway.

Agree they are easy to ride - mine is first bike i've ridden. Didn't even know how to change gears when we brought it - infact didn't know anything!! I survived.

    ok....

Some 85's have powervalves [RM, KX, SX], and some dont [CR, YZ].

Powervalves smooth out the power a little and give the bike a little more bottom end power. This makes the bike easier to go slow on.

That said, theres not that much of a difference. All 85s haul on top and have fuck all down low. [Thats where the 100's come in, the extra 15cc's are concentrated down low so the bike is a lot better for trail riding]

I think that the cr is the better bike out of the two, just because kawasakis [and suzukis] are not worth as much as the others for some reason. So if you went for the kx you would be paying an extra $200 for an older bike thats not worth as much. If you wanted a kawi i think you could find a better deal
