Took one for a test ride just to rule it out.

    Bought it.

    Lovin it.

That was my fatal mistake as well....born again rider because of a test ride on a sunny day. Thankfully...not in the 40-50yo bracket yet as with the other post.

Curious as to why the Beemer hate here though?

I think the Boxer engine looks ugly.
They are percieved as an overpriced bike for Greybeards.

Reality is I got mine for the same price as several Japanese bikes of double the mileage (kilometerage?) of the same year that I thought seriously about. I guess that is the joy of buying pre used?

The R 1100 S just felt so right I couldn't go past it, and I think they are the best looking BMW ever made.

I was always a jap fan....had most brands. My wife always liked the BMW tourers....I was not convinced. As for the boxer, I have to admit I wondered about scraping the thing on a lean.....but I'd have to be seriously leaning to do so....I think I'd worry more about the state of my pants first.

I know my bike is ugly....but it is so ugly I think its attractive...go figure. Like you...price was right and I am back in the saddle again. So I am a happy camper.

    There's a simple explanation.

Most people here have never ridden one.
The greatest pleasure of my recent life has been speed on the road. . . . I lose detail at even moderate speed but gain comprehension. . . . I could write for hours on the lustfulness of moving swiftly.
