eek South Auckland gravel bash..take 2?

    Finally, a decision!!!
Latte Riders and Fat Pig racing wish to announce the next carefully organised and professhinally run event on the gravel roads between Auckland and whatever's south west of here....Masport-boy, you listening???

Date: Sunday 30th August, thats in two and a bit weeks....

Meeting point: The Autobahn cafe on the southern motorway just south of Papakura (and chez Bass) ready to go at 0900 or 9am if you have a 12 hour clock. I will be there 15 minutes before but want to be rolling at 9.0

Ride: South of there, towards Port Waikato avoiding grumpy farmers and towards Raglan stopping at the Nikau caves cafe for a coffee then maybe down to Kawhia and back in a sort of loopish direction. About 350kms, so a good days riding at a reasonable pace, it's all on gravel and seal, at a wild guess about 70% gravel, but don't hold me to it.... and suitable for anyone willing to make an arse of themselves in public.

Plenty of options for doing bits of the ride if you haven't got all day but don't overcomplicate my life or I'll ignore you, ok? Hamiltonians, Nikau caves cafe looks good....

The coffees good, the gravel varied and interesting but you have to bring your own entertainment (and visas to visit the rest of Nu Zild if you're a Jaffa).

I'm planning on this being reasonably new rider friendly with more of a focus on stopping and talking / coffee / telling lies etc...or at least the option for that, who knows, we will see how the day pans out.

Due to techological incompetence I don't do calendar thingies so post stuff on here.

Tri-boy there is no excuse acceptable this time, stop hiding.

I'm in - date irrelevant. Good weather will be a bonus, but I'm negotiable on that too (don't want it said that I was teh one that wimped out )

I don't need an excuse to ride in my own back yard,I'll be out there this weekend. It's just a matter if I can be bothered to change wheels. With my 2 into 1 I have to remove the Supertrapp to change the rear wheel, and have also removed the gut stand...makes a 5 minute job a 15 minute job.

I will be keen to join you guys for a ride. Mainly been trail riding for the last few years, but I have wanted to get out and do some different types of riding for a change.

I have put the road gear back on the DR-Z400 and would be keen to go for a ride. I have not been out since I broke my collar bone. (Over the bars on the DRZ in the dirt just over 3 months ago and it has been around 8 weeks since the surgery to put the plate in)

I am planning a short trip this Saturday, locally around the south, to test out the shoulder, I hope it all goes according to plan. I have take it easy for a while yet, but I NEED to get out for a ride.

    Cheers

    Talking Ininininin

You were saying you gave up the 2 man on 30th to do this ride, was that the Power/DRD series as I see on his site the series has been posponed as he has been refused access to the forest......

Glad it is as now I can join the fun

Thinking of doing the beach section around the point to Kawhia? If yes will have to sort some knobs for me bike.

The Sandpit are running a two man series themselves as Greg Power couldn't get access to the forest but in reality my fitness is so crap I would be lucky to last more than an hour so I will do the GNCC stuff this summer instead.

Beach section, I've never done it, so whats involved? Is it tide dependant etc?

I'm thinking about giving the Woodhill GNCC round another go.

It is tide dependent. The Kawhia/Raglan ride guys gave it a go on Sunday (I happen to meet them in Kawhia)

The first time they tried the tide was too high and had to turn back, they were waiting in Kawhia for the tide to drop when i left. Didn't say in thread if they were successful.....

Start from Aotea & go round to Kawhia, MXNUT can tell you more. I think its legal....

Got stuck once when i went on it but lighter bikes don't have a problem. Wouldn't attempt on my current tyres.

    Its legal

Beach is a public rd like most in nz with a speed limit of 30 kmh although it is extremely unlikely that you would meet any traffic on there.

Tide times for that day are 12.00 low tide 6.25pm high which would mean that you would need to be at the Aotea end ( to head south ) at no later than 3.00 pm.

There is 1 rock outcrop at Aotea which will stop you if the tide is too high
Here for a good time, not necessarily a long time
