Also, the pic, OM NOM NOM my tank
Haha let alone me catchin up to you guys after we stopped for a few mins in Wellsford, unless I was speeding it wasn't gonna happen, that's the problem with sh16, average corner speed is 100kph.

You rode well , you definitely held your speed through the corners a bit more when you were following me too.

Haha well I wouldn't say the SMC has any regularity about it at all apart from the chiller.

If I'm thinking of going on a ride any weekends I just post up in here to see if anybody's keen, and as we saw yesterday a good 12 or so people turned up!

Whether it's learner friendly or not just depends on the organiser I guess. Although there can always be two groups, where you can just slot in with similar-paced people

He's convinced mine is in a better state of tune than his, even though my carbs need balancing too
Hey, thats the only reason I would be faster right?

Edit: From what I can find both are 45hp.

    What are you talking about?

I was only doing a steady 100km/h as per the open road speed limit.

fuck either way the last 20 years of abuse and neglect will have thrown those numbers askew

and of course on these things it's more rider skill than bike powar

right, so for any of those learners trying to catch up they have to do more than 100 or they'll constantly be losing you

ride your own ride etc etc
    (otherwise it's a race)

I agree entirely but that is kind of beside the point. De-tuned means deliberately reduced power output. Becoming out of tune or, to use the more technical expression, 'completely fucked' is what happens to a bike after 20 years of abuse and neglect.

Dare: I only had a brief look and don't know if there are different variants on the model? This link shows it at 38, but I don't know if there are different model variants or anything...

From 93ish (mighta been 92) Jap 250's were not supposed to exceed 40 horses.. thus later ones were reduced. I believe you can tell which you have from the dotted clutch cover

I think the Across' missed that period. 1995 and onwards CBR250s were 40hp...

Yes, the bandit is a 'detuned' version, and to be 'technically correct' mine is out of tune. But either way, its quite noticeable when I'm sitting behind Dare here, who has the exact same engine, and he's changing gear at about 10k and is accelerating faster than me no matter where I change.

Also, yes, the Across is meant to be a 45hp version, unless its above I think its 94, but theres a difference between what its meant to have and what it usually does, most of the 45hp suzuki's actually put out around 40 when you check.

ALso, squiggs, the dotted clutch cover is not a 100% thing, that was merely a model variant as opposed to a direct link to the hp

    .
yeah, my point was that being completely fucked might have more of an effect than the 5 ponies you lost at the factory. (seriously - i've seen some fucked bikes in the past)

is he clutching it? does his bike+rider weigh less? are aerodynamics also coming into play?

I've led one of these rides entirely on an fxr150 - dont try to tell me that had more powar than the 250s behind me

tbh i don't remember what the bandit was like, but your across has a good bottom end for an IL4 250 - perhaps you'll be quicker on a twistier road where 40-80 acceleration is more important than 80 -120? it's a sacrifice i make riding a 400 vs a 600; sure my 100-200 time is comparitively shite, but speed through corners and the whole gearbox/power curve combo keep me faster in the 30-100 territory, which on an NZ road is where all the fun is to be had (without losing your licence too!)

(and whatever happened to riding your own ride? if katman saw this thread....)

After having put up with the pace going up SH16 to Wellsford, it was agreed that those of us going back down SH16 would do whatever speeds we were comfortable at, and meet at Kaukop. 'Course, this wasn't even a dedicated learner ride anyway.

I don't *think* that any of us were trying to "keep up" with anyone else. But at the end of the day, we ain't their bloody mother.

Yes, it was a model variant. However they changed the clutch covers at the same time that they restricted the power to 40hp. Ergo, unless a owner has changed their clutch cover (epic crash damage?) it is a pretty safe way of telling.

Edit: Oh and wtf are you doing Dare, changing at 10thou RPM? VTEC's (Well, VVT on the Bandits, but I digress) has only just kicked in there bro!

To be down 5hp it probably wouldn't need to be particularly fucked, just old. I'd be surprised if mine was anywhere close to 40hp, that's for sure.

We should test this. PS. considering yours has done ~20k and mines done ~60k I'm pretty chuffed!

I think maybe my gearing is different, he has fairing so is good for 180 I think, mine doesn't get much past 170 afaik (tested on a private track of course ) (Indicated)

I <3 the bandits rev range, 3rd between 10-16k and you never run out of fun This is why I want an SV650 over a ZX6r, corner awesomeness. Too bad they usually look a bit blah.

My bike is vvt-less =( But I think Wade is referring to my town/cruise riding.
Usually I only see 13k+ on onramps, my guess is I'm doing it wrong? Like this guy.
