That error is reasonably generic... you'll come across the same thing, if, with boot priority, its trying to read a floppy or cd first.

Also, if it can't pick up the drive (see if it finds it on the post screen) it will throw up that error as well. Even unplugging and plugging it back in (power and sata/ide cable) can sort the issue.

Alternatively, my old mobo used to do that, a reset and/or power off and on could sort it... If none of that works, consider plugging the drive into a caddy, or another computer, see if you can access it that way.

Plenty of software capable of imaging the drive, copying to another disc, and trying that...

edit: Slyer, we went through a bunch of seagates failing earlier this year. About 5-6 in 5 weeks. Different capacities, models etc.

Not saying they're perfect, but better than most from my experience.
    For consumer quality ones anyway.

earlier today it was telling me that SMART had failed or something and that failure was "imminent". Fortunately I had time to back it all up before it died while trolling kb

Considering the disk has been on a courier trip around the world i'm not entirely surprised, and it's still under warranty - it's just the timing that's a prick, and seems pretty par for the course really.

then again, i could just give the sata cable a wiggle.....

Mine (bought in janurary) was one of the ones with the dodgy firmware issue, which was shipped and fixed for free and didn't lose any data but left me without a desktop for two months. I flashed my affected server disk myself before it failed and that was pretty straightforward.

Apparently it was quite a wide range of products affected too - if you guys have bought a seagate harddrive in the last twelve months I recommend you go to their site and check your model is not affected, or it'll die one day when you turn it on and it'll be about 6 weeks before you get it back.

Hahahaha, we'll get same day turnaround... ie... I tell the supplier its a paperweight, and they will either forward replace, or credit us the cost...

Most of the ones that failed for us were about a year old, earlier this year, just one of those phases, hadn't had any fail in over a year, but when you have plenty out in the field... odds are...

I do have a spare 320 (sata) if you need it, still in its wrapping after the original failed

Don't worry guys. I've got a spare 4GB IDE, complete with aftermarket jafa-added plastic window in the top. It's even got a Windows 3.1 install still on it for him to use.

jeez, you'd be like the guy on TM I bought my first case off... I spent all the money on the parts, just needed something to hold it all.

$1 res case on trademe, the muppet had cut out the side then stuck (with 4 squares of velcro) a perspex sheet on the inside...

He was very surprised when it only went for $2 to me, thought it wasn't worth it, and I said, don't worry, I'll come pick up... not happy was he

So, where is this LAN exactly, and are we bringing our own food provisions
Otherwise I'll get mum to pack me lunch.
Some people just can't seem to comprehend that they do not have the right to be unoffended in their lives.

well considering another 500gb drive is only like 80 bucks i'll just buy one later in the week when i have money and then it wont be a big deal if the warranty takes ages... server is pretty much full anyway so could use another 500GB

i hear us UofA engineering students get free windows7 - which ships with AOEII and conquerors expansion for epic lannage
