another important thing to remember here is that afghanistan as a nation has not declared war on anyone. so public relations are a lot more important, we don't want the majority of the public thinking the combined allied forces should get out of there.

Every one of you have missed the point which was clearly spelled out in the last paragraph of the article. You all just read the headline.
    Here is the last paragraph..

Let me be very clear that this is not about a group of young soldiers just taking a photograph of themselves; soldiers have been doing this since the availability of cameras. These three are returning to New Zealand because of a series of actions and errors of judgment on their part that did not meet the standards we expect of our people."

Seems these particular soldiers have a bit of history over there.

A "series of actions" would be
1: putting sticker on warshot round.
2: taking a photograph of said round.
3: not obtaining permission to disseminate said photograph.
4: sending the photograph to a 3rd party.
5: bringing the forces into disrepute.
6: anything else they can find to throw at them... unbuttoned top button, dirty boots, etc, etc.

These troops could be top men and have an unblemished record...

At least they get a trip home, mid-deployment!

Been happening for a long while now.

Always thought it ridiculous when in NI you had to read out warnings from a yellow card before opening fire.

When the person is 400 yards away they never heard.

Don't get me wrong, I don't support them at all, but I do think they are totally out-gunned.
Somebody has to quote that in their signature...completely silly. Being outgunned doesnt make someone less of an enemy or threat in fact it make them more desperate and more ferocious, and being a lesser force does not dismiss that fact that the taleban are a force to be reckoned with. It is a war over there, the wars of today are not going to be like WW2 but it is still a war.

The taleban know the terrain, can blend in with the population and dont seem to have any hesitation in killing their own, making them one of the most dangerous enemies to fight.

There are good people fighting and dying to protect us. It grinds my gears when people bag the soldiers and countries fighting for our freedom, without them there is nothing standing between the rest of the world and a very angry middle east. A middle east that needs no more reason to attack anyone than because we are different.

The soldiers have my upmost respect and gratitude, as do all other servicemen, whether they ever see combat or not they made that descision that if they did they would not hesistate to fight for us.

    Speel over.

Exactly that as it was considered a police action not a military one

Interestingly, the tide has changed quite a bit. The general populace are providing very good intel on the tallitubbies, then Mr Reaper sends a hellfire or two.
Hopefully they rub bacon on the Hellfire when it has been loaded onto the aircraft...

But it "is not a war over there". You heard it on KB, so it must be true...

    You know about this then?

I expect your family had lots to say about it.

I loved the bit about marking the top bullet in a mag with nail varnish prior to going out and if it wasnt the same when coming back to base you had to write a report explaining the reason.

Reason #1: "I forgot to take my nail varnish out on patrol with me"...

I was a sapper for a little while, I can't say we ever had nail varnish applied.. only rations scrupulously counted, out and in !

My dad just lay in bushes and ditches for weeks on end picking his arse.. smelling .. well, just smelling !

Had a mate in the MP's who went on patrol with a Sterling.
He had 3 loaded magazines issued to him.
Each mag had a line of nail varnish painted over the magazine sides and over the topmost bullet.
If that bullet was missing or the varnish didnt match he was questioned as to why.

( They never worried about the 3 other magazines he unofficially had in his kit, and were used to immediately replace the issued mags, once the patrol began)

Days and weeks in a ditch. Yep he would wiff a bit at the end.

These 3 soldiers being sent home for their so called miss conduct is a crock of shit. PC gone too far.

Sort of like the military crime of "dumb insolence". If you say something you are buggered if you keep quiet you are buggered.
