Just another flat tyre caught on camera

Hey, so I was working on the video taken on our Pass the Brass Trip from Queens Birthday weekend in 2008 and decided this might be worth a youtube clip. It's El scootos' puncture repair somewhere up in the Black Forest Station.
Had a little laugh at cooneyr trying to wear the wheel as a hat, or he could just be trying to get the dirt out?

Hope you're ok with me posting it, we're adventures and we're used to stuff like that... right

Damn I cant watch the video at work. Will have to see what is so funny tonight. That tyre was rooted, nice big slice. I should find the photos. So, how long did it take us?

The Vid is 6 mins.....nearly 7....so good effort....

Mind you, with that view I would have broken out the stools and the coffee and just taken it all in......

Unfortunately I can't find the original tape with timecode so can't say how long it took.
I had to load this on to the PC from a copy I had on the DVD HD Recorder.
Needless to say there is a fair amount cut from the timeline.

Was a nice view but the sun was stuck behind the top of a hill somewhere leaving us in shadow and getting cooler. Earlier in the day or in summer it would have been an even better place.

LOL. Wheel hat is about right. Not sure about where you were pointing the camera TA - through leg shots and all! Cool video and I'm happy I did a half decent job. That lot took a lot longer than 6/7 mins though cause of the tyre repairs.

Nice one guys. Luckily I've never had to fix one out on the trail. Makes me think that perhaps I should practice with just my tool kit.

Must happen on our rides about a couple of times a year at least, and that's just counting the rides I've attended.
Usually just conventional flats rather than cut tyres.

There are some really sharp rocks in the area and one pierced the tyre. See 2nd pic below which is from when we were replacing it in Alex. First pic is of the temp repair we did the next morning. Surprisingly it stayed in place for 100kms.

In the video we took the tyre and tube off, put a patch on the inside of the tyre to try and stop crap getting through the cut into the tyre and we stuck in a spare 19inch tube. I carry one 19 inch tube cause it can be put in either end.

The next morning we noticed that the patch on the inside of the tyre had not stuck and we could actually see the tube when the tyre was inflated. We grabbed a chunk of old car tyre tube, and tried to glue it into the hole then wrapped duct tape around the tyre and rim with the tape below the knobs. We were doing more off road tracks that morning on our way to Alex which is were we got a new tyre.

About 50% of the time a replacement tube or patched tube will do the trick but we quite often have to patch the tyre as well cause it has been seriously cut. I've never paid a shop to change a tyre cause I'm a sadist who likes to practice tyre changes so when we do have to do it on the side of the track it is not too hard. All you need is two short tyre leavers and a mountain bike pump but it is really handy to have some soap or CRC/WD40 to lube the tyre to help mount it again.

Yeah I was a tyre noob at the time to, lucky for me big bro was there to get it sorted, Chur bro!!

It was a pretty unusual flat as it was a sharp skinny rock that was pointing skyward and of coarse I had to hit it! Cut the tyre and also the tube. Deflated almost instantly.

Lesson learnt? Concentrate on the road ahead and look out for big rocks!

I understand completely, when your on your way, you just gotta go!

(FWIW)I prefer to keep my tyre pressures up on those rocky roads but some of them are very "SHARP"! Just been lucky so far I guess!

Plug giving advice? Never

He patched up Balrog's front on the first DustyButt when it split the sidewall.

If he'd done it quicker we may have finished. We were pretty close...
