Great comments Chris! You personally have done more for promoting Enduro in NZ than anyone lately Lets hope your success overseas and the RB City Scramble boost the entries for next year (when they eventually set some dates)
Sorry, but when you have the delegate for enduros in MNZ saying that Enduro bikes must have a factory fitted headlight(not an after market one)!! and a factory fitted tail light then you have to wonder why people think that its just a freakin expensive exercise to ride MNZ events.
Rulz like that just make it bloody expensive for Joe Bloggs to enter on their std MX bike. And they can't understand why more folks aren't competing? Go figure.
I'd start getting your cheque book out now t595.
My son and I did most of the TTR Enduros last year The average age for competitors must be around 40 (I've exceeded that!) We need some rules that encourage some young guns in We don't have to ride our trail bikes to work on Mondays anymore!!!
i agree with what you say, but its not just the $100 vs $300 you mentioned above
for example for myself - lets say i was going to do an enduro in auckland or taupo, either way its ~500km travel each way
so theres:
say 25 litres of bike fuel & $1.75/l $43.75
750ml of mixing oil to go with that fuel $15
diesel for the van to get there 60l @ $1 = $60
diesel for the van to get home again = $60
accommodation - usually free, but if unable to scrounge @ $100 a night, 2 nights = $200
then theres the entry fee itself $100
so if i were to go to an enduro, stay in a cheap motel the night before and the night after, use only 25l of fuel, and not pay for any food or drinks during the trip, im allready up to $478.75, and thats before we take into consideration anything i wear out or break on either the bike or the van. it does work out pretty expensive.
and that boys and girls is why i dont ride many enduros
on the other hand for those that live near enduro events- theres not many excuses!
I think you'll find neither front or rear for ttr, nationals front ( doesn't need to work but needs to be there, go figure ).
Regarding boom's costing model, mine's a bit different, but still comes to ~$500 an enduro, but to be honest the only diff enduro vs any other ride long haul is a new rear tire & maybe $10 more entry ( normally around 45-55 from memory if you have MNZ license ).
Put another way, it's pretty much the same price as a trail ride ( if you don't put a new rear on ), but no quads/no queues for easy hills, generally way better marking, you get to really compare your speed with your mates & for something like Operau you get to watch the extreme special test which is worth the entry fee alone( Assuming you're not riding expert & doing it yourself ).
plus you get about 4- 4.5hrs of ride time for $55 compared to maybe 3 10-15 min motos for about $30 and having to wait most of the day to get them.
Thats if your into getting more bike time for your dollar????
This is straight out of MNZ. Am I reading this wrong?
14-3-7 Headlights and tail lights are not required to operate but complete units should be fitted, note
rule 14-6-6. Where forest regulations and supplementary regulations require operational
lights, machines without lights may be excluded.
14-6 PENALTY POINTS:
Points
14-6-1 Starting engine before start time each morning 50
14-6-2 Being late at a time check-for each complete minute 50
14-6-3 Checking in early at a time check for each complete minute 50
14-6-4 Failure to start (14-4-2) 20
14-6-5 Elapsed time on special tests for every one second 1
14-6-6 Failure to have complete headlight or tail light fitted 20 per item
Good question, if you look at the Operau results, same race. The difference is 20 points penalty in the National if you didn't have a headlight, no penalty in the TTR ( I never got penalised at Taupo for no headlight ).
I've never heard of them doing tail-lights, but I'm a newbie.
How they can do this ruling at the races, when the rule book says something else, is a very very good question. As I understand it, they were doing TTR headlight penalty in 2008 along with national, but 2009 they changed to no penalty for ttr.
