The bush pig in my shed is a mid-eighties DR250 with 17" rear. My 2001 DR-Z250 had a proper dirt-size 18" and that bike was unchanged (except for badges) back to 1995 maybe earlier.

The second set of wheels came from a 1991 DR350 - they were virtually identical.

My 1988 DR250 has a 17" rear, but I think it was more likely just registered in 88....

I've just gone out to the shed and pretended to put it on and made vroom vroom noises and pretended to case the bike out over some rocks and a small log and it came through with flying colours.

These are my bashplate generations from the mighty 50K sign to the Suzi one to the GP Custom...

The GP Custom needed a little... customizing to fit with the centre stand

Things to tweak now are...
File a bit off as it's a leeetle close to the oil filter.
Strip of HD tube between the front mount and the plate.
Shorten the front c/s bolts as they just touch the engine case.
Strips of foam rubber between the plate and the frame rails.

Got some other ideas too...

Be interesting to see if there's any audible difference. I'm expecting a bit of resonance before I get some foam strips in there.

Got some sealsavers today too.
Tomorrow I'll pull the forks and see how they look...

I've just pretended to go over a big log and although it got hung up on the footpeg mounts and ripped quite a bit of bark off it went well with no undue noise.

Shit. I could work for MCN with these reviews.
Who needs to go out and actually ride it. Saves on insurance and reg too.

just woundering why you thought it would make noise??
Would have been interesting to see if it did or not.

On the drz400 the whole plate touchs on the frame. I use to make my self a new plate every now and then and there was only one time that it was a little noise there but i just tightend the bolts a little more and it went away.

Anyway i will trim the right hand wing a little for more clearance for the filter and shorten the bolts

Certainly is a dude, me like, me like.

Some people reckon the engine noise gets reflected back off bashplates up at the rider making them sound noisier.
Can't say I ever noticed a difference myself although I have been known to stick a bit of rubber in between plate and frame to kind of protect the frame a bit from scratches or gouges from the plate. Probably kidding myself but seemed like a good idea at the time.
