    It's a vicious circle.

People won't list an item on another auction site because it's unlikely to get the number of views that it would on TM. If they do choose to list it on another site it's often listed at a higher price to compensate for the reduced views.

People need to start buying off these alternative auction sites which will encourage more items to be listed at more attractive prices.

But no-one is interested in looking at a site that has a total of 67 items listed.

Could you explain further? I sold my car a few weeks ago (wasn't using it, it was just taking space up in the driveway) and got charged $39 for the listing. There was no success fee!

I sold a PC PSU - there is no listing fee for general merchandise, I just got charged a fairly small commission called a success fee. It was about 7% which was a fuck load cheaper than what any B&M store would charge for the same service.

It sounds like you are referring to a listing fee AND a success fee - but I have never been charged both.

    There is always zillion.com

As Trademe keep putting up their fees, traders ARE moving to other sites. It's the high volume sellers which are moving and that's good because their listings make a site look busy, ie it breaks the circle

Trademe is huge though and it's going to take a while for the other sites to be just as good but they are getting there. Zillion especially has done extremely well at gaining a market share.

Hell though, other than having to pay upfront for a vehicle listing, $30-$80 is pretty good value for the exposure your vehicle gets.

If you list a vehicle as a classified then there is no success fee. If you list it as an auction there is a listing fee + success fee.

If you list a vehicle as a classified ad (at a set price) you just pay the listing fee.

If you list a vehicle as an auction you pay the listing fee plus a success fee - the value of which is determined by whether your listing sells for more or less than $1000. $15 for less than $1000 - $39 for more.

This is the situation exactly - Trade Me is popular mainly due to the fact that Trade Me is popular. From their point of view it is a fantastic circle, for any competitor it is a vicious circle. Even Ebay would not be able to compete - their T & C are as bad or worse than on Trade Me and they really would not have any way to get their market share high enough to spark a revolt from Trade Me.

Ahh, I see. Well surely if the Trade Me site lists your vehicle then you pay them for it, if they host an auction for your vehicle then you pay them for that too. Surely this is the way of the world - companies provide a service to make a profit from it.

The real problem is the vicious circle one that you mentioned earlier - if you don't like Trade Me's fees then that is a problem because they have a virtual monopoly, no one but them can expose your goods to more potential buyers.

What is the difference (to TM) between listing a vehicle as a classified or listing it as an auction?

    Answer - nothing.

(Other than the fact that it's just an opportunity to suck some more money out of their members).

I'll return to my point, it's a business not a charity.
As a business their main priority is to maximise return to their shareholders and grow that return year on year, not to provide as cheap a service as possible to you and me or the same profit each year. Like it or not it's a fact of corporate business, and thats what Trade Me is and as much as I'd like to agree about the Australian bit thats not the reason.

If you had an ice cream truck and sold 100 ice creams for $1 each earning yourself $100, and then discovered you could put the price up to $1.20 and still sell 100 ice creams making you $120 would you sell them for $1 or $1.20?

    Of course it is.

But i find them to be the best online site out there for getting your shit sold, as does every other NZer. As someone said about getting 40 views in a week. Sella just doesnt get used.
Also i tend to find that things such as cars and bikes are just put on Sella as it is free so they might put their used and abused 250 on for 5k and if someone bites then hey, they sell it.

TradeMe is just so huge! My 80yr old Grandpa has never touched a computer in his life. He hardly knows how to use his fancy new heat pump. Yet he knows about TradeMe and last month sold his ElCam on there. He even gave his Neighbor commission for listing
No matter how shitty trademe gets, it will still thrive because people think "oh its the most popular one", and just perpetuate that, and trademe know it
