Good spots in the North Island for an overnighter

    Hey all,
need some tips for good spots for an overnighter. We are trying to find a spot near the beach and/or some hot pools, preferrably both but that is asking a bit much. Also some cheap accommodation nearby will be handy too. I was thinkin we just head down the east coast, find a decent beach and look for accommodation later but the girlie isn't too thrilled about that plan.

If I cant find a decent spot, i'll just head round the coro loop and take her back inland to Rotovegas and hit a backpackers and the local spa.

Awakeri Hot Springs about 15 km (guessing) the Rotorua side of Whakatane.

    Perfect.

Accommodation options from tenting to motel. Hot pool included in the fee.
We take the family camping there a couple of times a year. Wife and I have taken the long way there on bike to spend the night in one of their cabins.

    Morere Hot Springs at Nuhaka.

    Mahia Beach Motor Camp.

Lake Tutira. (Basic Campsite no power but fresh water, costs nothing)

Yeah its a great spot. Theres also a campground at thornton beach, but the hotpools would be my pick.

We are ten mins down the road too, and have somewhat of a workshop, so if you need to adjust something, just shoot around and I'll unlock the toolbox.

Mrs H and I recently spent a night in the Tron. It was just like Palmerston North, but without the excitement factor.

The best overnighter for bikers in the North Island has to be Whangamomona.

I haven't but my father in law lives in Kaingaroa and we've spent a few days at Kerosene creek. Given the state of some of the locals I'd advise against it.

If you are up for tenting the hot pools and camp at Waikite are pretty good, just down the road from Kerosene creek, tenting or campervan / caravan type accommodation only.
