    Red face Scorpio 101

    hey all

The yamaha scorpio is my first bike it's second hand and had done about 3,500ks when i got it and it's done about 4,700 now. just a few questions pleeeease

One of the screws on the brake fluid box on the handlebar is completely stripped... it just wouldn't come out and the fluids pretty low. Any suggestions?

It was last serviced at 3,000. When's it due next? I keep the chain oiled, the engine oil up, the airfilters ok but anything more than this basic stuff I don't know

What will cause it to overheat? I went on a 4 hour ride yesterday and it was sweet but is there a limit to it's um long distanceness?

oh and lastly, what do people generally take with them on a day ride? like a puncture repair kit is that it? I dunno

    Thanks for any help!

Take the other screw out and while pulling on the resevoir cover turn the stripped screw anticlockwise. With a bit of luck it will come out. Then of course a decision needs to be made what to do about the stripped screw. You may be able to retap the hole the next size up or as a last resort use a coarse threaded self tapping screw

First service is at 1500km, next at 5000km, then every 5000km. If at the last service it had the oil changed then it should be sweet to 8000km provided you maintain the basics like you mentioned.

Probably the only limiting factor to its long distanceness is you, the rider. The bike will happily run all day long. People take these wee bikes from Welly to Auckland in a day, no problems at all. It'll sit at 6500 - 7000rpm all day without issues.

I take a mate or two, a punture repair kit, a basic toolkit (combination flat/phillips screw driver, pair of pliers, some common sized spanners and an adjustable cresent, some insulation tape), a cell phone and my wallet

You got the screw out yet? If you can't turn the cover with the other screw out, then push hard on the screwdriver while applying some turning force, and tap the screwdriver handle gently with a hammer. The screw is very short with very fine threads, so all you're trying to do is to get the threads broken loose. if this method doesn't work, use a straight-bladed screwdriver and a hammer and tap it gently at an angle (you may need an assistant to hold the bars/bike steady to do this).

Final option is to drill a small hole in the centre of the screw head, and use an EzyOut.

Once you've got the screw out, fit two new ones, and make sure you put a tiny smear of grease or oil on the threads before refitting them. The thing is, brake fluid is a bit corrosive due to absorbing water at a prodigious rate, and it has poor lubricative properties, so if any gets in the screw hole or on the threads, they bind up very readily.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

He shouldn't really be doing this unless he knows what he is doing. Risk of disaster is high.

Find someone local with the correct size screwdriver, or an impact driver.
