    Fork seals replacement, Wgtn tutor?

Is there anyone in Wellington that can show me how to replace my front fork seals on my 2003 YZF450 ? I'm very mechanically minded ( Pretty much nothing i haven't done to a car's ) have garage and lots of tools.

    Happy to pay for tutor

Also anyone recommend any good brands of seals ?

These seal savers on Trademe any good ?

This is how I learned how to do it.

The allballs kits are good from trade me.

Seal savers tend to trap dirt under them, I wouldn't recommend them.

Thanks man, had a look the other day on youtube but this one is way better then any i could find ... Just wondering about the tools he had:

Tusk Seal Driver ( Drive the seal in )
Seal Bullet ( To put the seal over the sharp end of the fork )
Tusk Fork Oil Level Tool ( Get right amount of oil in fork )

Did you have any of these when you did it ? Or know where to get them

You will need versions of all those tools to do a good job. Insultape can be used on the sharp edges to avoid damaging the new seal.

I made a seal driver out of 48mm PVC pipe which was a pain in the ass and didn't work very well. A metal one would be much better...

The seal bullet isn't needed really
I made a Fork oil level tool out of a syringe with clear tubing, a metal pipe that I marked with measurements and a rubber bath plug to sit on top of the fork. Finding a big enough syringe (100cc I think) was a pain, eventually I got one from a doctors surgury after swearing I wasn't a junkie wanting to inject large amounts of drugs. I have since seen a motionpro fork oil tool at cycletreads, twas about $50 I think.

Did you use a hose clamp to keep the pvc together so you can hold the PVC further down ?

For my FZR I got specs on how high the level had to be from the top.
So get a ruler, shine torch into fork and wait unitil it touches the oil, then measure.

    Setting fork oil level

Turkey baster from the $2 shop, put some tubing on the end. Measure the required oil height up from the bottom of the tube, put a cable tie tightly around the tube there. Slightly overfill the forks, stick tube down until the cable tie rests against the top edge of the forks. Suck till she won't suck no more.

Job done! Quick, easy, cheap, effective.
    Cheers,
    Colin
