    Removing stuck rear axle CRF250R

    Morning all,

Have a puncture on my bike I want to have sorted before I go away for New Years... I've got the axle out as far as I can hit it with a hammer.

The manual says to use a knock puller but I doubt many people have them sitting in their sheds, does any one have any good tricks?

    Cheers,
    Ryan

I do hope you haven't hit the axle back with the nut on it, it will severely ruin the thread without you noticing and the nut will slip next time you ride (this is what happened to a friends bike, a new axle and nut cost about $120 all up).
I would suggest a continual soaking throughout the day with crc/WD40 (you should be able to pump a little crc in behind the bearing dustcaps), then maybe knock the axle back in and start working it back out again.

Good luck with this as i know how much of a mission it is

    Merry xmas

yip i did the same thing on my old 2001 cr, just soaked it with a penetrating fluid over night then a couple taps with a hammer and it came loose. every time i remove my axle now i coat it with some copper grease just to help it out again and to stop corrosion

I don't know how stuck it is but it's likely you may just be able to put something in there to hit with the hammer.... a similar sized piece of pipe or an extension piece for your rachet set maybe?

Have taken many out when they have been "stuck" to the point of needing to be tapped most of the way through but nothing else was needed.

Also if your doing this on a stand it may be worth putting a block of wood or similar (my foot normally) under the tire so that as the axle leaves one side the wheel doesn't sag sideways and put unneeded extra friction into the equation.

    Good luck

Been there done that unfortunately. I've run out of hitting surface.

The nut still comes off the thread easily - not a complete newbie to garage mechanics just new to bikes and hate getting stuck. Have walked away a number of times.

Have been giving it a good bath of CRC... Will go and fill myself up with ham, turkey and beer and see what I can do later.

    Cheers for the help.

The crf has a hollow axle

I had this and i found a rod with a step on it so it fits inside the axle and steps to a larger diameter i used that and hit the fucker like a red headed step son.............It took a beating but axle came out and was good to use again
Even on the old ones if you dont race serious and you wanna just go do the odd club day and smoke everyone on a big old 5hundy it great and if you get beaten you have a handful of excuses

if its come out that far try turning the other end of it or use some thing that is ever so smaller than the bolt to drive it through worse case once done if nut dosnt fit just file it down where it has swollen out from hitting it the bit that sticks out past the nut is not that important.

This is along same lines as other suggestions, but find an old fat bolt (like a coach bolt maybe) grind head down so it's just under axle OD. Wrap a pile of tape around bolt so it fits neatly (and stays centred) in axle hole. Use extension bar from socket set as a drift. A few big washers and a nut and bolt might make a good plug as well.

Placemakers sell threaded rod so you might be able to jerry rig up a slide hammer and something to fit axle end, but probably more hassle than making a plug.

just use an extension from a 1/2" drive socket set and a hammer. its common as for them to get stuck. done it a shitload of times on a shitload of crs and crf's never damaged anything yet

I've been beating the life out of it and have only got out 3cm... I give up.

Will take my bike to work on Tuesday morning and hope like hell I can find someone in the Manukau area to fix it before going away Thursday night.

All this for a freaking puncture!

go to repco and get a can of crc ice failing that heat it up use the bit that is sticking out to try turning it the temp change will help either that or hit it back through and make sure the end hasnt swollen out from hitting it meaning it not to big to pass through.

Sounds like a real pita. Probably need to go back and forth repeatedly, so it can clean itself a little each time rather than drag the whole rusty scab past bearing.

Don't know if this'll help, but maybe once you can get the axle past brake, pull caliper out of the way. Then put a little heat on hub, on the other side's bearing and knock bearing out while driving axle through? Then you could get behind bearing and clean axle bit by bit as you go?

Just be careful when spraying CRC/WD40 around the bearings as it will brakedown the grease in your wheel bearings. anyway while or when you get the wheel off, would be a good time to check them.
