Question DR650 fumbling at mid-range at height?

Afternoon gents, rather than reinvent the wheel I thought I would ask if anyone else with a DJ kit finds their bike fumbling through mid range when riding at reasonable heights.

Yesterday I found Suzy was fumbling a bit and I am not sure why, she only did it once we climbed a reasonable height over Waikaia Bush Road in Central Otago, then again on the next hill lot.

Got opened airbox top, opened pipe and de-slagged the hearer pipe, engine is bulk standard as is everything else.

Running 160 Main at present. any input would be great.
    Cheers Andi & Ellen

What throttle settings does it misbehave? Main jet has most effect when the throttle is wide open.
    Cheers,

    Try it 3rd from top.
Mixture screw? - Once warmed up - Out to max revs and then back in half a turn.

    What pipe are you running?

In mid range of engine revs when I throttle on fairly hard to WOT, so wanting to jump the front wheel over a water table crossing etc is a non event as it sputters.

Will do, mixture screw, seems good, idle is spot on although now I think about it when we go higher the idles did drop back a bit.

Pipe is a metal one... , I have made an extra resonator as well to take the loudness out, this is 45 mm perf straight thru.

My mechanic said my muffler bearings were worn so he replaced those with new sealed cartridges and spotted me a great deal so only cost me 600 bucks, got new halogen fluid at the same time

The 160 main and 4th from top should be good for that setup.

    Float level?

Make sure you wind the mixture screw back in half a turn from best idle.
    It's too rich otherwise.

Cheers man, Will have a play around.

Float level seems fine, will check the mixture setup when I put her back together, were where up at approx 1300 metres when this was hapening, will trying droping the needle one setting seem as we are starting at 350m here in Wanaka.

I can then test it at snow park or treble cone and get to a good height pretty easily.

Well she is back together but I can't get out till tomorrow night as we have our Wanaka Motorcycle Club meeting tonight.

Just one dumbarse thing, I left out the little washer that sits above the C clip and below the spring retainer base, does that actually perform any function?, so far as I can tell it is just washer but I don't want to pull the whole thing down again if I can avoid it.

With red face I ask if this will create any problem?

Oh yeah.... thats gunna create all sorts of issues
Interesting thread though... The Big was doing exactly the same thing, I couldn't pull top gear between Black Forest and Mackenzie saddle unless I was doing over 4000 revs, and at other times over the 6 days anywhere below 4000 revs would have the bike "stumbling" in 4th and 5th gear. Seemed to get better at lower altitude though.

Not in the short term, might be there to reduce wear on the parts either side.

Sometimes there are washers (thin metal or fat plastic) underneath the clip - they hold the needle up out of the needle jet so are important. Sometimes they can be a tuning item, optionally fitting the washer to get "half clip" positions.
    Cheers,
    Colin
