All this corruption of us innocents, what will be next?

Also - must add a little naughty thought after hearing of the roving cyclist "posse", and thinking of Peetey's beaut videos... I wonder what the confrontation would be when their "epic performance" could also be sent for verbatim peer review at the Christchurch Central Police station? Those little cameras will become nigh-on essential someday soon, just sitting there on looping 1hr record, just to refute the claims of everyone for whom "it's never my fault"... (Rant over. Be about your business, people!)

So Gareth what was it you said about MaxF's "Funky ass curves"? - God, now I'm worried...

Spent part of the afternoon with FJRider cleaning the piston and the caliper so it's all ready for the brake pads.
Good news! It'll be nice to be back on your own beastie again I bet.

Funny you should mention that. I live out in the harbour and the Cyclists (note, capital C) are a real menace. Well, I say menace, they're too stupid me be a menace I think, they just get in everyones way, hold everyone up then get shitty when anyone says "Do you mind?".

So, I started taking one of said little cameras in the car with me, particularly on weekends, and I have some great footage of these nutters.

    I have made several conclusions.

    1) - The normal Joe Bloggs on his bike purely to get from A to B is no problem whatsoever. They hear you coming from a mile away and move right over to the side of the road so there's plenty of room for us both. They're great, but they're so few.

    2) - The more "Cyclist" gear they have, the more into the centre of the road they ride. Each piece of kit they have directly relates to about a foot more towards the centre line.
So from the curb: Silly bike with silly little tyres, 1 foot inwards, shirt with all thier "sponsors" on, 1 foot inwards, obscene hot pants, 1 foot inwards, silly helmet, 1 foot inwards, silly pedals that your feet lock into, another 1 foot inwards. So far, that's 5 feet away from the curb! Given each lane is only about 6 feet wide, you can understand why people in 4 foot wide cars get a little miffed at not being able to squeeze past.

    3) - The more "Cyclist" gear they wear, the more other "Cyclists" they attract. They seem to go round in groups, or Gaggles if you will, and insist on riding side by side on these thin, winding roads leaving no one else any room and also seem to be so engrossed in conversation about how much more "Cyclist" gear they've got than other people, that they simply don't hear cars approaching from behind and thus don't move over.

The shirt with their "sponsors" on is a testament to their stupidity. A sponsors primary role is to pay for things/gear in return for advertising, like having a name on a shirt.
It's guaranteed that all these "Cyclists" paid top dollar for each of their shirts. They're paying a company to advertise for said company. Shouldn't that be the other way around?
I reckon the reason they ride round in groups of 3 is because they all have 1/3rd of a brain cell each.

Ok, I know this has turned into a bit of a rant. It's late and I find the "Cyclists" out here piss me off more than the mozzies. At least Mozzies know when to get out of the way!

After the new paper had a rant on Wednesday the numbers seem to have tripled. Since then every day I have been held up by a group riding double abreast and so far and I have seen 2 cases of road rage. I do a bit of push biking so kind of have a foot in both camps but have been a little intimidated by the behavior I have seen over the last couple of days.

Cyclists are getting like, or are like some Motorcyclists and Boy Racers, in some ways.

They are fine riding and driving by them self.
But get them in a group and they get some sort of gang mentally.

Think they are bullet proof and are bigger than Ben Hur.
And think everyone should move out of their way, as they own the road.
And they are the most important thing on the road.

They aren't, we aren't, so please think about that when you ride in a large group.

And remember pissing other road user' off does not help anyone.
And it could make them worse to the next bike or motorcyclist they come across.

As you are seeing now with cyclist and crap that is happening now.

I can remember the 70's, when Joe public thought all motorcyclist were gang members.
And some would, to stop gangs getting bigger and taking over.
Would run you off the road or at least push you around a bit on the road.
It happened to me a few times, bad enough once the I got push up on to the centre island on Moorehouse Ave by a lady driver.
Even little old ladies were doing it to mates.

It got bad enough the News had to explain the difference between motorcyclist's and Gang members.
I can see parallels to what is happening now.

And if someone gives you some room to over take, I does not take much to wave as a thank you.
It may make them more likely to give room for the next bike.

    Rant over and sorry
Feel the fear and do it anyway

    Don't confuse education with intelligence.
There are alot of highly educated idiots out there.

Oh dear, according to this I ride 5 ft from the kerb on my silly bike with silly little tyres

But at least I only do it by myself. Groups of cyclists can be arrogant twats and a right pain in the arse.

And I agree about paying to wear clothing with sponsors name on it, nobody except cyclists are stupid enough to pay $60 for a plain shirt just because it has a nike symbol on it, or $200 for a made in china jacket with HSV on the front to wear while driving their toyota corolla, are they.

Seriously? That's amazing! You'd think people would want to avoid harassing gangs, especially big scary ones in leather right next to you ...

Too true, I try make a point of saying cheers to any road user that is considerate. Cyclists who move over, cars that allow a motorbike to get past etc.
It's all about manners and/or common courtesy I reckon. My rant was really because alot of road users out here, slow cars, cyclists, tourists in campers etc out here don't seem to think about that stuff. They're not all bad but it happens alot.

No offense taken, I agree with most of what you said, and there are ignorant twats in cars, on motorbikes, on bicycles.

Coming down dyers pass road on the motorbike the other day I was following 2 cars doing considerably less than the speed limit and ruining my fun, the first car pulled over when they could so I gave them a wave, the second car carried on at the same speed as before and tapped the brakes at me whenever they thought I got too close. When I passed them they got a different sort of wave.

If there are bands of angry cyclists prowling then a camera sounds like a fine idea, I'd even post a vid on a cycling website and tell them to wind their head in, most of the cyclists I know would prefer they didn't go around antagonising drivers.

I'd be keen to stick a camera on the bike for a ride sometime, may be able to help with a battery depending on what you use.

Anyway, back on topic, the long way to Greta Valley this week is it?
