It seems strange they don't fall off, but when you think about it, when you're awake you're not actually consciously trying to balance, nor do you really need to "hang on" if the riding is smooth. I wonder if sleep paralysis kicks in, maybe it even helps.

My wife often sleeps when on the back of the bike. (So it's true - I must be a Nana rider)

My ex use to happily sleep on the back of my XJ... use to tuck her hands in under the handles of the panniers, and the sit back in the on the back rest which use to wrap round and was, as she said, "quiet comfy..." never had any issues of falling off... but by tuck her hands in the handles and the way the back rest was she bassicaly locked herself into position.

The annoying part was she use to snore over the intercome... that was the annoying part...

Speaking of sleeping at the back, I once read a short story about a father and a young son going on a biking trip with daddy's friends.
On one part, the dad duc-tapes his son to himself (or was it the rear top-box?) to stop from an event of falling off when sleeping.

A mate of mine fell asleep while riding his BMW1100RT on a long stretch of desert road - killed himself.

I would say that a pillion falling asleep is seriously dangerous and not teh kind of thing you shoudl treat lightly.

She could fall off or at the very least badly unsettle the bike in a corner.

If its happening, it might be worth using some sort of attachment system (you could also use the duct tape for her snores...).

RIder sleeping will of course result in tragedy. NOt so sure about a pillion tho. Ive only ever dozed off on the one trip and it was on the Foxton straights, nary a corner in sight. I woke up again over the Paekak hill road when it got bendy again. I think the biggest problem was that i slumped onto my mate and shoved him into an uncomfortable riding position as he had to hold me up as well as ride. He did say his wrists and shoulders had got sore. That is where it would get dangerous I would think.

I fell asleep once, on the back of 'Big Red', on the never ending foxton straights.

First thing in the morning, climbing off the ferry in a storm, storm was so bad, travellers had to lie down because it was impossible to walk without falling or slipping in vomit!!

A mechanical problem kicked in some time after leaving the Welly motorway - complete with smoke, forced riding speed to 70km's , before throwing the ole girl on a friends truck to send her home, hands in the boy's pockets, woke when I thunked the helmet. Being light apparently I didn't impede the riding. The only time I ever slept on the Guzzi. (she was very loud, but also prefer to know what's going on)

Over the last 30 years I have regularly had pillions fall asleep. The periods asleep vary from a few minutes to a couple of hours. The sex of the passenger doesn't seem to make any difference. I haven't had a pillion over 40 years of age fall asleep but that is probably because most of the pillions have been less than 40 years of age. At no stage has the falling asleep or waking up been of any concern to me as a rider. No pillion has ever looked like falling off and most of the pillions who do fall asleep do so more than once.

I do the same to the passengers in my car - all ages and sexes fall asleep regularly.

THAT all depends on whose cheese is cut.....I would much prefer the snoring in ear to some of the whoppers I have been caged in with!

I sleep soundly, always have, never fallen off and that's on the back of his sports bike : )
I am currently trying to stay awake on the front!

I've come close to falling asleep on the back of a sprotsbike, pretty sure the only thing keeping me awake was the cramp in my poor knees!

I think those that fall asleep must be so trusting of the person on the front....that or super tired. The 3 times I've been on the back i've been too busy yeeehaaaing to fall asleep. I'm guessing this sleeping is on very long rides.....
