Small bike with muffler from a big bike

OK, so I got myself a 'lil Ducati Monster 400, and its got stock mufflers. How will it sound if I get the mufflers off a big bike, like an R1 or a Hyabusa for example? Will be be quieter, or louder? Surely the bigger cc bikes have a better flowing/less restrictive muffler... Worth a try?

i doubt it'll make much difference, possibly a bit louder, why not just remove a couple of baffles from the stock exhaust,

drill the rivets, on the end cap and go from there.

I doubt the bolt holes will be in the same place on your Monster as on an R1 or 'Busa for a slip on, you'd probably be better getting some help to core out the stock exhausts, looking at having a custom jobbie made up (can anyone confirm whether Virgin Mufflers still exist?) or dare I say it, look at ebay specific to your model of bike

Oh yea i realise id have to get the exhaust shop to mount it and sort the flange/slip-on, but still, a lot cheaper than buying race mufflers, not worth it for a 400.

the mufflers dont have vivets, only welds. ill take it into an exhaust shop tomorrow and see what they can do/recommend. At the moment its all engine and transmission noise, no exhaust!

In that case opening it up is the best (cheapest) way to go, all stock exhausts have to meet the same requirements, so as far as I know taking one from another bigger bike won't make any difference.

On another note, a non-branded custom exhaust may not be as expensive as you might think, then you'd still be able to put it back to stock if need be later on.

i'm sure you can buy after market pipes for a 400 monster. Recommend 2 brothers, sound great on a v twin.

Yea i probably could too, but I dont wanna spend $800 on mufflers for a 400cc engine

Ill find something on trademe or at a wreckers...

You can look at coring your mufflers like on this site: http://www.ducatisuite.com/mufflers.html.

I doubt you will find you get much of the Ducati sound that you're probably looking for out of the 400 engine even with mods like this - a big part of the sound comes from having bloody great pistons moving heaps of gas (pompone).

Mufflers can be more complex that they appear. F'rinstance I used to work at International Harvester. There was an ACCO truck that was repowered with a 903 CI Cummins, and it had this great big muffler up the back of the cab. Big as in about 400mm diameter and about 1.5 meters in length. That truck was always coming back in with injector problems, overheating problems, etc. Lots of parts changed. Finally someone had the idea of putting a manometer into the exhaust. The backpressure was right off the scale. Fitting the correct muffler for that engine cured everything, and the replacement was a lot smaller than the original.

What about a set from a breakers overseas, maybe from the 600? Might be cheaper than you think. Then you can butcher/modify those while leaving the originals for when you sell. And they will still look right.

I think ill get that set on trademe, and if they are too quiet ill modify them and keep the factory ones in the shed.

I dont expect to get the complete ducati sound, but i would just like a little more than the beautiful stock quietness!!

Listen to Pete, buying some random exhausts off tardme & trying to fit them to a bike they don't belong on is likely to be an expensive waste of time.

Go talk to someone who specialises in this sort of thing.

Modify you ones. Those ones on trademe will be dead quiet due to new regulations.
If your going to replace your mufflers for noise you should not buy OEM ones.
As for putting big bore pipes on, the will fit - but if your buying OEM they are a waste of time.
