Mufflers can be more complex that they appear. F'rinstance I used to work at International Harvester. There was an ACCO truck that was repowered with a 903 CI Cummins, and it had this great big muffler up the back of the cab. Big as in about 400mm diameter and about 1.5 meters in length. That truck was always coming back in with injector problems, overheating problems, etc. Lots of parts changed. Finally someone had the idea of putting a manometer into the exhaust. The backpressure was right off the scale. Fitting the correct muffler for that engine cured everything, and the replacement was a lot smaller than the original.
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.
