I have always and still do at the moment park my bike in the motorcycle parks on Lambton Quay (Wellington) but now I have a newer bike I naturally want to take good care of it so I emailed wilson to ask about parking in their buildings in the area and it would cost $65 per month.

I went into one of the parking buildings to see where I would be parking if I do pay $65 a month (which I would like to do if I can afford it in winter) and I wouldn't even get a parking space! I was told there were two floors with areas where a bike could park - these areas were just little leftover spaces where the layout of the carparks meant no other vehicle could fit in there. The biggest space looked like it would only fit two bikes. They were right at the edge of the building and I think the rain would blow right in onto a bike that was parked there which would totally defeat the purpose of my shelling out the dosh!

Does that sound right or am I entitled to park in a proper parking space for my $65 a month?

Nah, proper car parking space costs more. What you are seeing is part of the WCC initiative to free up the current bike parking spaces for day shoppers (who the fuck goes day shopping on a bike!?).

But, because the ACC protest thing was going on around the same time, it all went through with minimal fuss. Now, you can only park in alloted spaces (not on the pavement) and they have agreed with carparks to faciltate bikers needs (which means car parks are now able to charge for all the dead space in car parks now, even if they allowed bikes to park there for free before).

If you are lambton quay then you might want to consider tournament car parks - they aren't charging yet (as they are council owned to my understanding). Find one of those and ask the attendant where you can park.

As for the auckland is better than welly thing - yeah right - ex pat from uk here so rain is easy to put up with - there is no way I was going to put up with the aukalofa crap traffic and lack of a city centre. Welly wins every time, even if it does have a bit of a gusty reputation (windiest city in the world apparently).

I have been riding for about a year and a half and have yet to pay for parking. When I have to go into the CBD I use the Civic or Downtown carparking buildings - being Auckland City Council owned they are free for bikes. In the suburbs parking is mostly free anyway. I never feed the parking meters - where would I put the 'pay and display' ticket anyway?

I consider paying for parking similar to paying for sex: I wouldn't do it - but if you're desperate, it's cheaper in the dodgier parts of town.

Tournament Parking are charging for Bikes, as I park in Tournament Parking next to the Bungy.
$50 a month I think is reasonable, you even get a swipe card to get in and out after hours as they lock the roller doors.

The threads on here where council was letting people know .. went under the radar .. I don't think so ...

They have added more parks and have not taken any away. They have also indicated enforcement of illegal parking ... which is on footpaths without space for pedestrians ...

James Smith carpark has done lots to accomodate bikers .. at no charge to the bikers ... including making the area more secure against errant car drivers.

All council owned carparks have free bike parking, and that is one of them. You should be ok leaving your bike there long term, I know others do at other Council carparks in the CBD. Not sure about Mercury Lane, but other Council Carparks have security cameras and attendants etc as well.

I have clients that have a branch in Wellington, so 1-3 times a year, I park in the CBD for up to 2 days at a time. I have no idea where specific bike parks are (I just ride around and look for a space - on a side note, damn one way streets get me tied in knots when I need to back track), where parking buildings are etc, and since the trips are planned for the same time as a holiday, I'm passing through on the bike, with all the gear etc. So yes, I guess you could sorta classify me as a "day shopper"

I have a monthly car space through work at the Tournament Lombard Street in Wgtn - but the attendants are difficult, you park on level 10, you have to display a pass on your bike and take a ticket on the way in/queue for 5 minutes to sign out (not easy with gloves!) - looking at renting a space somewhere else, but going rate is $40 a week for a single space!

Don't fancy parking the 'bird on the street over winter!
