Late '70s,I believe,I recall seeing a fellow regularly ride past my place without a helmet,on a square tanked bonnie. At the time I had an RD350

The requirement came in in the late 70's, just prior to me getting my license, but it was still very common to see guys without helmets, occasionally I would leave mine off, or even take it with me on my arm incase I want to get a bit serious and do some fast riding - then I'd put it on. The cops didn't always pull you for not wearing one, in fact one local cop thought they were just for hooligans

But I got sick of eating bugs

and my father starting ringing the police and reporting me if he saw me without a helmet

funny how things change; I use to ride in jeans and often just a swanny, but now I feel next to naked with all my gear on.
The couple of times I fell off on the road - it was a bit messy. Back in the early 80's ACC paid to replace my torn swanny and jeans (the St Johns people had to cut the jeans off)
Lifes Just one big ride - buckle up or hang on

I never wore a helmet then, I did have a good pair of boots and a leather jacket which was protected with a denim jacket with its sleeves cut off.
Mind you there weren't as many idiots on the road then......................just a few of us..................the boots had 1/4 inch thick heel plates to put down at night when passing cars.

Yes times have changed...I remember a date back in the 70's going to vice versa party on bike. He was wearing a ballgown, high heels and fether boa and I was wearing a suit (every pocket filled with a beer bottle). We did get stopped by cops but only to see if we had been drinking beforehand.
It is entirely possible to teach an old blond new tricks!!!

Get The Fuck Over it... Seriously, what is with people crying over what other riders wear? I still can't see how it should be anybody elses business what they wear, or how people can complain about so called stupidity while forgetting how pedantic they sound...
OR - If you're so concerned about it, why not talk to them rather than about them?

Reminds me of when leatt braces came out in MX. They're neck braces, and for the first couple weeks after they came out, all of a sudden if you didn't wear one you were asking for death or a wheelchair. *rider gets run over* - "should have been wearing his leatt"

Non-bikers would claim the same regarding motorcycling in general. Who is right?

In that case, I want you to stop consuming any foods high in fat or sugar, smoking, or anything else that could be dangerous or detrimental to your health... And STOP motorcycling. It's dangerous, not necessary, and I don't want MY valuable taxes going into paying for your dumb ass to get rehab when you get fucked up.

You aren't going to pay an extra 5c each year when someone asses off, and without using your freedom you would be paying taxes for nothing, right?

Actually, if you can't see what I'm saying, I'm not the stupid one. You complain about others making unsafe decisions that affect you. YOU make unsafe decisions (like riding a motorcycle) that affect other people. Why do you still complain when you aren't practicing what you preach? You think you could count the amount of bikers in fault at accidents on one hand? Whether or not it is your fault, you would be safer in a 4X4, if you really care so much about safety

You seem to be missing the point. Everyone has their own standards of personal safety and acceptable risk. While you condemn some for their choices, others may condemn you for yours. Who is to say that you are right and they are wrong?
