    Mothra

I have a confession to make, though some of you will already be aware of this, I have a bit of a phobia regarding moths Some however, may call it more than a bit, to be fair. I hate the things, even the little tiny ones that somehow end up in the house despite my best endevours to keep them out. I cant concentrate on anything else but a moth if there is one in the house.

It stems from a very traumatic episode in my teens where I was terrorised by a moth while camping

Anyway, the other night we were sitting watching the idiot box as you do when there was a funny sound in the flue of our gas fired heater. Sounded a bit like a bird flapping around or as I said to Maha a friggen big moth I got up to get a torch and turned back to say something to Maha. All of a sudden he leapt out of his chair at me and slapped his hand down my leg. That happened at the same time I felt something land on my leg

Well here is about where I need to apologise to Maha for teasing him about squealling like a little girl when he has to attempt to catch a live mouse

He does not squeal, but boy I sure do OMG!

It got the treatment before a pic could be taken but this pic will give you the general idea of how big it was

If I was not scared of heights I would get up on the roof and check that the flue is secure so this can not happen again

Looks like a Gum Emperor to me...I think

EDIT: Actually no it doesn't (I checked)...perhaps a "green geometrid" ? (whatever that is...)

It's a Puriri moth, friggen horrible things. My kids used to catch them and take them to school for show and tell (no surprise I have never got over my phobia of moths really). I used to make them let them go, I hate things in jars/cages, but one sadly got over looked. They actually smell like rotten meat when they decompose They are revolting and dont belong in side at all

Did you know that there are flesh eating moths? Hyposmocoma molluscivora. Guess they probably look like the one that wanted to have a go at you. Are you tasty, by moth standards?

Ha ha! Beautiful moth tho! Years ago we were having tea at home with olds [7 of us!] and as the old man put a fork load of food in his gob a moth flew in at the same time. Needless to say we were laughing so much we couldn't tell him what he was doing! He was looking around chewing on his moth enhanced dinner, wondering why we were laughing, as we were wetting ourselves laughing and of course unable to speak. So, yes, he had swallowed the thing long before we regained composure. At least he had the good grace to laugh at himself!

May I suggest a visit to Butterfly Creek?

Seriously, though, phobia's are a right royal pain. I don't have any so I can but sympathise, (and laugh at you as well...)

Trust me, the reason I posted this was for people like you to have a good laugh at my expense. Totally irrational behaviour - I own it completely.

    Oooh. Nice pic.

We used to get ferkin massive moths (wingspan 10cm or so) where I was born, and I was a bit nervous of them at first - but after waking up umpteen times in the night to go deal with one the novelty wore off and I just mashed them. Only moths that bug me now are codling moths - because they eat my apples.

Also had great big flying cockroaches, about 4cm long - used to fly around my head and land in my bed all the time, or on the headboard, or crawl over my face. (No wonder I'm crazy, it's the years of sleep deprivation getting woken up to squish insects!)

I one had a thing about praying mantises, but like them now, and encourage them back out into the garden rather than squashing them. Maybe you can get to like moths?
