Two people are in a serious condition after the Harley Davidson motorcycle they were on ploughed into the side of a turning vehicle on State Highway 6 near Blenheim this evening.
The 54-year-old male driver was airlifted to Nelson Hospital by the Summit Rescue Helicopter with serious head and chest injuries, while the 45-year-old female pillion passenger was transported to Wairau Hospital by Blenheim St John Ambulance with serious leg injuries.
The crash happened near Okaramio about 2.45pm.
Senior Constable Maurice Horne of Havelock Police said a green car was turning right off SH6 into Norths Rd when the motor cycle, which was overtaking another vehicle travelling towards Blenheim, ``ploughed'' into the right side of the vehicle.
The impact "flipped'' the passengers off the bike, Mr Horne.
The motorbike then collided with a power pole and came to rest in a ditch about 25 metres from the point of impact.
Emergency services tended to the occupants in the ditch about 10m from the bike.
The motorcycle was part of a group of four returning to Blenheim after a day trip to Rai Valley.
Mr Horne said the Serious Crash Investigation unit would investigate. The Renwick and Havelock volunteer fire brigades attended the incident.
