Norton sets world land speed record

The relaunched Norton company has set a new world record.

The midlands based 961 Commando recorded an average top speed of 129.61mph at Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, taking the record for the 1000cc Production Push-rod class away from last year’s record holder, a Buell that recorded 126.39mph.

The Commando was ridden by Alan Cathcart, who had to complete two runs from which the average speed was drawn. Cathcart said "It's nice to put Norton back in the record books for the first time in so many years. The fact that we did it on a stock bike exactly as delivered to any Norton customer makes it all the sweeter."

I remember them. They used to make motorcycles decades ago.

I thought Rollie Free did 150mph on a Vincent back in the '40's.He did take a few parts off....and took a few clothes off himself too,but it was a standard production bike.

their site doesn't list a dealer in Australia or NZ unfortunately

personally I'd prefer 4 v/cyl, fuel injection and a full floater, but it's still a great looking nekkid
