Those devices have always been illegal. Why is it even mentioned in a new bill.

Currently jammers are not illegal in New Zealand. They never have been. It was discussed making them illegal a couple of years ago but nothing came of it. I guess they are doing something about it now.

Are there actually any effective jammers available that come in a size that is similar to that of a std radar detector? And not those mountain whatever they are jobs, they've been proven to be ineffective.

Don't worry it's not just NZ media...

Until now only active devices (that is those that emitted radio energy) were banned, and then by radio regulations not transport law. Lasers were not required to be licensed under radio regs so were legal.

Passive devices (ie those that deliberately cause interference but do not in themselves transmit) now appear to be included.

How does a radar detector, which simply detects interfere with the operation of a speed measuring device? I know that these devices are not 100% passive, but they certainly do not interfere with the speed measuring device (they can still get a lock on you).

Anyone care to explain this one to me?

Depends on the dodgy science that politicians often employ to get the revenue machine moving faster. Apparently "detectors" not only detect but also "modify" the signal. The same way as Speed Cameras are infallible and that mobile speed radar is accurate in picking out one target from many.

P.S. There is no civilian microwave (radar) jammer available anywhere regardless of claims! You need something the size of a microwave oven strapped to your car and the ability to power and focus it.
