All good mate - that's the kinda info I was looking for. My boss has a 2v Ducati Monster which he's customising, along with a sports classic, an MH900e and he's just bought an NCR Milona R... so getting the 848 will improve the workplace relationship and result in me getting less shit for being a Yamaha rider, now I'll just be a sell out!

However, as Randy has very well pointed out, you'll get pride of ownership from the Ducati that despite it's shortcomings, you'll find difficult to live without.
Good point, as it's gonna be a fun times bike only, and maybe a beach/latte shop poser it won't be getting high km's on it. I get the feeling if I buy a Ducati there will be no going back, where as if I get the R1 then I'll be able to have my fun and then move on to the next.

I wouldnt go for an 848 though, too slow
I'm on a TRX850 at the moment, tops out at 220kmh and has about 90bhp in it's current state of tune. I like good drive out of corners, not so worried about top speed or mental acceleration. At the end of the day I'm a road rider that enjoys the track, not a wannabe racer who thinks the latest, greatest and most powerful is gonna make me keep up with the likes of yourself. If I did I'd buy an S1000RR!

    Well there's your answer...

Up till that point I was going for the 848 because despite the fact it's comically bad out on the highway it is a thing of beauty and highly desirable. However... perch a fat bastard on top of it... and it'll just look silly.

No the R1 is the bike for you it's a big, ugly, bastard too so there'll be a kind of balance to the whole ensemble. Big, black, threatening and with a wonderous engine... cool.

I can see this may seem harsh but I like to think of it as harsh but fair. In the finest traditions of Kiwibiker

The Honda was blisteringly fast, easy to ride fast, easy to live with, and was definitely joy to ride.

The Ducati was quick, hard and tricky to master but very rewarding once you know how to handle it, and when you ride it proper it is simply satisfying.

Surprisingly, I was a whole 4 seconds faster at Puke on the 848, despite it being 30kph slower than the Honda at the backstraight (265 vs 295, all speedo figures not actual speed).

    So, there you go.

For me, the 848 gave much more fulfilment, but only when I get to do it properly.

The 1krr was joy everywhere, but not as extreme as the 848 although if you look at the average it may compete or be even better. But I'm not someone who settles for mediocrity.

As far as living, Honda was a joy to live with. Ducati is very tempramental and service is a bit on the expensive side relatively speaking. Also, in my 2 years owning it I've had 2 voltage regulator blowouts, an exhaust servo motor blowout, and lost a few screws due to vibration.

Do I miss my Honda? Yes, sometimes.
Would I sell my 848 and get another litre bike? Not sure.

Sorry to make it even more difficult.

After owning a couple of litre bikes and more than a few late model 600'ds and riding this fellas bike down 22 - I'd have to say depends on your personality. If your aggressive, love power and wheelies I would buy the R1. If your a bit of a homo buy the 848.

    Service , maintance, spare parts....

I'm biased but the R1 would be my choice. My mates Dukes (although very yummy and I love the noise when following), are always in the shop for one thing or another....

I was under the impression that the 848 is exactly the same size physically as the 1098?

Definitely the R1 if you like pies... it's a big tub of lard, with those huge mufflers sticking out the sides. Personally I think you'd be crazy to buy one of those ugly whales... but then again, they're all a bit ugly.

Thats true, the rear end is positively ugly. Even a set of pipes doesn't tidy it up. Front's all good though, side fairings r still pretty okish. I'd buy a 2008. However, if you really want a good bike u'd be buying a L0 Gsx-R 1000

Yeah, I'm a fan of the headlights with the ducts around them. Although the current crop are all a bit ugly in their own ways, you don't see ugly from the captains seat.

It is. And a lot of parts, including bodyworks, are interchangeable.

Suspension parts, however, need further checks to ensure compatibility.
The steering geometries, seat heights, and wheelbases are different.
Also, 1098 has adjustable rear height by default, while 848 are not adjustable (unless you get aftermarket adjustable mount)
