Tourism goes a long way to bringing in cash but without infrastructure and satisfactory standard of living for the people who live there just who is benefitting from it all?

The money required to put on the public spectacles of opening and closing ceremonies for every Commonwealth and Olympic games could fund mega worthwhile causes within the nations they're performed.

Let athletes compete by all means. And I'm not suggesting they go back to the "bare basics" of the original concept from Greece....(although you blokies would be only too happy with that for events such as the beach volleyball for example - btw. I will never understand how that became an olympic games/comm games sport! ) But why, especially in countries where atrocious poverty is such a huge reality, does all this $$ have to be wasted for "spectacle" where each country is really only trying to outdo the last?
    I'm with you both ...

    1. It's hockey
    2. It's women's hockey
    3. It's NZ vs Wales

And you are seriously wondering why nobody is turning up?

I doubt they could even sell seats to this fixture if it was held in New Zealand.

If its in a city with 16 million inhabitants then I would expect the gate price to be reasonable enough that a few thousand of them would be sat spectating.

Maybe they mean the swimming is synchronised to the music?

In which case, I could be a competitor, but the music would have to be thrash metal or something so my unco flailing would match (or you couldn't tell it didn't).

I believe that would be the 50mtr fly.

But yeah, I could care less about the Comm Games and I consider myself a bit of a sports nut.

    Delhi laughs

So it occured to me watching the decathlon shot-put event tonight with hardly a spectator in sight that you could almost have as part of the commentary "...and the spectator goes wild!" It then occured to me that their equivalent of the Mexican Wave would be the two spectators waving to each other from opposite sides of the stadium. My daughter sent me a txt earlier suggesting the cycling would be better if it were like the Super Mario Cart racing where the competitors can throw bombs at each other or grow super size and flatten their opponant. Speaking of cycling ... saw the Aussie winner of whatever race it was and she wins the gold medal for the most prominent camel-toe. Could almost use it as a bike-stand! Gold medal effort there.

Oh the injustice of it all, as a kiwi gal gets into her final, then because they change the time of the race, she decides to pack her bags and come home... why would you not run in the final? Kinda makes a mockery of going over there in the first place, let alone all of the training etc...
    I didn't think!!! I experimented!!!

    Oh for goodness sake.

(If she aims to win by being fitter, not faster, maybe she's in the wrong event in the first place?)
