    Importing a 1981 xs1100 from Canada

Has anyone had any experience importing a bike from Canada?

I'm looking at bringing in a 1981 xs1100. It's my father-in-law's bike and he said I can have it.

It'll need a bit of paint, a new exhaust and new tires I'd say from what he has advised. But it's free, so hey, why not!

I've had a look at the customs website, but really want to findout from someone who's done it before what's involved and any hidden pitfalls. Insurance, vinning, registrations, and anything else I don't know I need to know about.

Should I get the bits needed fixed in Canada first and then shipped to NZ or would it be better to ship it as a damaged vehicle and then get it sorted here then vinned and registered?

He's coming out in March and is shipping his CB750 to get around on while he's here so one option is to get it freighted in the same crate.

    All advice welcome.

    Stephen

If you could wait it would be easier to bring it in with the CB

If you took the bars, foot pegs and exhausts off off both bikes and get the bikes in tight together and put the other parts on top all wrapped up and make the packing case to suit what size you need it could save shipping costs

If you are wanting to get parts for it before you ship it, .
I recomend you purchase parts for it before you bring it here,
parts here are almost non existant.

    Thanks for the feedback

    Thanks for the feedback.

It looks to be about an extra CA$300 to ship both bikes together.

It is a "Midnight Special" (reminds me of that song...).

Thanks for the links. Both brilliant sites.

Who would have though the LTSA would be that helpful with a 4 step process.
