Maori aren't indigenous to NZ - quite simple really. They turned up, killed and ate the locals, and proclaimed themselves as being here forever. For a stoneage race up until the 1800's, forever was probably 2 full moons worth.
Length of time here seems to be basis for the whole over-subscribed gravy train that is the Waiatangi Tribunal, so don't suggest that concept is not understood.
THat's a misunderstanding.
In the 19th Century plenty of European and American writers were suggesting that colonization was wrong ... The British Colonial Offices instructions to Cook were that any land he found belonged to the people who lived there .. and it's instructions to Hobson were NOT to sign a treaty as the sovereignty of the Māori peope had been accepted by the British Crown ..
The tribunal is not about establishing indigenaity as a class above the subsequent immigrant population - it's about addressing the grievences which have created the situation Māori find themselves in today as a result of the unjust and unethical actions of a colonizing people ...
