Maybe it's the fact you're in NZ, where i come from (the UK) they're not so magnanimous. The last time I had a crash the first thing they did was breathalyze me, didn't even ask if I was ok, once satisfied I wasn't a pisshead they buggered off...lol
In my experience, which is also lengthy

, being nice to them really doesn't make much of a difference
if you've broken the law, tried both approaches and achieved the same response.....mild patronization with a smattering of high and mighty and a side of officious ponce syndrome.
I tend not to break the law in stupid places (outside schools, in shopping centres, outside copshops) however the attitude of many officers I've encountered even on
the most minor offences.....62 kph in a 50 for example in a car that can stop on a 20 cent piece......is frankly unnecessary. You will never change the way some people feel towards the fuzz no matter how much you glorify them as our saviors because unfortunately as they are 'just like us' that also works against them, they also let their feelings effect their judgement.
They may not 'hate bikers' as someone mentioned but there are a truckload of them that really don't like us very much......that also applies to anyone in a car with a big bore exhaust/spoilers etc. I've been pulled over for
the heinous offence of driving my car in a straight line late at night obeying the speed limit.....there was another group of uniform wearing enforcers hanging around Europe a few years back with a similar attitude
